I was a solid player of Halo 2 for quite awhile. I played it for a couple years straight and I never got bored of it. When Halo 3 was released, I played for a few months or so, unless some friends really wanted to play. Fast forward to this past September. I have played Reach for awhile, but I am starting to do the exact same thing I did with Halo 3.
This got me to thinking, are the stats Bungie offers us killing the motivation to play? It's like I don't want to play Reach because I don't want my K/D ratio to go down, or my game losses to go up. If I get a negative ratio in a game, I get kind of upset, and I play Score Attack or just turn my Xbox off.
Halo 2, on the other hand, only showed you the previous game's stats and that was it. No one that I played with really cared about their K/D ratios, winning, or anything else until the game started dying. Heck, there was no such thing as cR or exp. Maybe I am uncovering the fact that Halo 2 was just more fun in general.
Am I anywhere close to being right in this regard, or was Halo 2 just more enjoyable because of less segmentation? For example, playing Halo 2 online gave you matchmaking, custom games, and that was pretty much it. However, Halo 3 and Reach both have so many more gametypes to play, and even less friends are willing to play.
I really don't know what the purpose of this rant was, but I still find that I had more fun playing Halo 2. Anymore, I just play Reach for the challenges to rank up. It really is kind of disappointing, but I guess that's why I have Halo 2 PC. :(
