Subject: Where did the flood really come from

The way I see it there are 3 possibilities*

1. The truely are from another galaxy

2. The Precursors made them to kill the foreruners

3. Or A the humans made them for their pets.

so which one is it, I haven't read the book but does anyone know the definitive answer?!

  • 01.12.2011 3:39 PM PDT

Technically, the cake can NOT be a like. It was seen, in its' true form, to be so deliciously moist. Therefore, you not attending the party was a grave mistake, and you are now shamed in the world. How do you sleep at night?

I'm pretty sure Halo: Legends said that they were intergalactic. Not sure though.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Halo: Cryptum explains it all.

I didn't read the book, yet. I'm getting it, though.

Well, we still really don't know about the true origins of the Flood. All we know so far, is that they came from another galaxy and that Humanity first discovered them in ancient starships in glass like containers as spores. Oh and regarding your 3rd option, the Human's did make the Flood as their pets when they weren't extremely dangerous BUT they were still the flood when they were in those glass containers. Really, we still don't know the true origin of the Flood.

*******SPOILER ALERT FOR HALO CRYPTUM*******
Not a major plotline spoiler, but just some information spoilers.

I have. sit down for this one.

Ok. SO before the forerunners there was an ancient civilization that existed almost a Millenia ago, clled the Precursors.
Then like the forerunners they suddenly vanished. The Forerunners Idolize them as theyve achived Tier 0 technology level.

About 150000 years before Halo There also existed the Human civilization. One day, out on the farthest reachs of the galaxy a group of ships was spotted. Ancient, old and decrepid. With no Life sings on board.
All that was on board where millions of glass jars containing this fine powdery substince. Human scientists and the like examined and studdied this powder but found nothing wrong with it. They did however notice that by spreading the powder on this species they kept as pets (think like a dog), that the "dogs" became much more docile and intellegant. It became a hit on the black market.
Many years later, the dogs who had had the powder spread on them began exibiting signs of a growth on their back. They started to knaw and chew off their own fur. others even eating the ones with growths. After a period of time they began to mutate. The humans then got rid of all the "infected" "dogs". But it was to late. The infection had spread to humans. Cuseing mutations and loss of skin. Touching, being coughed on, even handleing any dead or shed flesh from an infected human or animal would cause you to be infected also.
Thus began the Flood.

There is more but ill spare you the details.
As for where the flood came from.... I wont spoil that for you.
If u really want to know just go to Halopedian.com

The Captive Speaking to the Didact:
We meet again, young one. I am the last of those who gave you breath and shape and form, millions of years ago.
I am the last of those your kind rose up against and ruthlessly destroyed.
I am the last Precursor.
And our answer is at hand.

The answer that the Captive, the last Precursor, spoke of is the Flood. The Precursor created it as a biological weapon to destroy the Forerunner for destroying them.

5 years and counting on Bungie. I feel old and worthless.

The Flood originated in disabled ships that wandered into this galaxy, and soon enough, prehistoric, space-faring Humans had found these ships, and the powder that was onboard. Glass containers onboard contained Flood spores, which were tested and rendered harmless by the humans. Eventually, they gave this powder to their pets to keep them calm, and after a few centuries of breeding, the pets started growing odd fur and tentacles grew out from them. The new disease soon spread to the humans. After a long war, the humans finally managed to cure the Flood, and sent them out of the galaxy. At the same time though, the Forerunners were waging a war with the humans, and the humans lost, also not giving the Forerunners the cure. The humans were deevolved and sent back to Earth, and just as the Forerunners thought there was going to be no more conflict, they re-found the Flood on the planet G17g (I thin that's the name) and thus began the downfall of the Forerunners, and what led to the Humans/Covenant rediscovering the Flood.

There you go.

Yes, it can be interpreted as that, but we're still not exactly sure.

Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of woes and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!

Well what else do you propose its saying?
I took it as the flood was a failsafe option. A way to take revenge angainst the Forerunners for defeating them, thoughsands of years after doing so.

What I'm saying is that we don't know if the Captive is truly a Precursor or that he's even telling the truth. We do have two more books to go.

Humans and the San Shyuum had the 'cure,' but kept it from the Forerunners, who where in the process of dismantling humanity.

Umm no. where are you getting your info from ?
The home planet of the Brutes is called Dosiac. And the covenant name for the brutes is Jiralhanae.

That planet in halo wars was a flood infested shield world.

  • 01.13.2011 11:47 AM PDT

It's not where they come from, it's getting them the hell outta there.

  • 01.13.2011 12:00 PM PDT

I havent read Cryptum yet... But..

Considering that the Flood is Intergalactic, or maybe even Extra-galactic (outside known galaxy).
could it be possible that the Flood wasn't actually made by anyone else..?
Think of the movie Slither. The flood, like the slither monsters is a Conscious Virus or Parasite. So technically wouldn't it have been possible that over millions and millions of years it could have evolved?
Say for example Cancer significantly mutated and killed everyone and everything on Earth. After therers nothing left for it to basically eat, it Adapts, And adapts and adapts until after millions of years it still a parasite - but an aware parasite...

Does this make sense in any kind of a way?

Read Halo Cryptum, it gives the best possible explanation on where the flood came from, and how to beat them. (WITHOUT the use of any halo rings.)
