Subject: Pathways into Darkness 2

"That's about all that can be said for plots, which anyway are just one thing after another, a what and a what and a what.

Now try how and why."

It's already been done. It's called Marathon.

A better question would be whether or not Pathways into Darkness should be ported to other platforms simply because of the fact that it may become impossible to play in the very near future in its current state.

-edit-

Thanks for the link to PID rewritten. It's made my day brighter...

With that said, I don't know how well the project will end up at this point. I guess we'll see.

I would argue that it isn't a PiD2 that we are yearning for, its a chance to "re-live" the excitement of the first, be it through a port, or through a similar title.

I myself have been inspired to look into creating a re-make (though i'll admit it's to improve my own skills, not to serve the community, that being said, if i ever got anywhere with it, i'd release it free of charge).

I'm only 18, and even I can say I remember "The good old days", when game creators were more focused on user experience, then how much adrenaline they can squeeze out of teenage boys. PiD doesn't even resemble what we call "fps" games these days.

I recently was parted with my own PC, and hauled the old Mac out of my garage. I've spent the last few days enjoying PiD once again, and still value it highly in my list of "top 10 games".

To think that the best games (in my opinion) are often programmed by one or two creative people (For instance the original Prince of Persia, Jordan) is incredible, and I feel it's a real loss to the game industry to see huge teams of graphic designers focused solely on the visual. (Bit hypocritical since i'm applying to 3D Digital Animaion degree, but I stand by my point!)

Ugh.

No sequels.
No remakes.

I don't want to "relive the good ol' days!" with better graphics and processing power. I want to create new "good ol' days" with something new. Is that so hard for people to grasp?

We can take off our pink sunglasses now. We don't need a sequel or remake to enjoy a good game from our childhood. Don't get me wrong, I love PiD and a bunch of old Mac games, but they're brilliant as they are.

Why can't we take what we love from those games and put it into something fresh and new? There is no reason, because we can.

They are completely unrelated. Yes, M1A1 does have an extra room at the start which looks very much like the first floor of PiD, but this was not in the original Marathon. PiD is set in Mexico... and Marathon is set on a space ship made from the moon. None of the story overlaps whatsover, apart from the release of the W'rkncacnter from the sun, which is mentioned in Marathon Durandal.

They're in the same universe. Let's not question 819.

... And?
We are in the same universe; does that make us related?

I already said. The only thing they have in common is the W'rkncacnter (and Jjaro). Marathon never once talks about a temple in Mexico or a bomb of any kind.

Watch your tone of voice around a lady. Did you even read that page?

Hologram of Jjaro diplomat 'Ryu-Toth' appears before President Clinton and five senior military staff warning of unnamed awakening 'God' beneath a strange pyramid on the Yucatan Peninsula.
and
The Jjaro arrive on Earth to take more permanent measures against the buried stunned dreaming God.

The plot lines are quite unique to their titles, but they're in the same universe with a similar cast of characters. So yes, Marathon isn't a traditional sequel, but it is a sequel. It takes place after PiD and holds the same canon.

By the way, we are related. We're arguing with each other over video games on an internet forum. :)

EDIT:

You're trying to make that sound like it doesn't mean anything. I don't think Marathon even needed to mention PiD events. Like I said, it's not a traditional sequel and it's not a direct plot sequel. That doesn't justify PiD2.
