I saw this on the internet one time, and decided to do it:

I cut off the end of the Xbox S Controller and exposed the five internal wires.
I cut a USB cable, five inches from the end, and exposed the four internal wires.

I spliced them together (ignoring the extra yellow wire which the Xbox controller has)

I downloaded an XBCD driver from the internet and installed it. I plugged in the Xbox controller/USB device and it was recognized by the comp.

I turned on Halo PC and switched the gamepad options to the one I had created. I had to set the controls with the buttons and such.

I played Halo PC with an Xbox-only controller and beat down some people. It was sweet.

Anybody else do this?

no, I just saw something which said that the Xbox controller used a USB interface. Therefore, I figured, with the proper drivers installed, (and with the output going through a USB head, obviously) that I could effectively use the controller as a gamepad, like one you would buy at a computer store.

It's pretty sweet. Halo PC has never been this fun.

Any idea what that extra wire might have been for? Could be important or something.

Well, considering that the USB only had black, red, white, and green, there was no way for me to incorporate the yellow wire of the Xbox Controller anyway. I'm sure it's just some sort of regulatory input/output; it's clear that none of the button controls go through it.

I'm not sure if rumble works though. Maybe that's what yellow is.

If you have an old Duke controller that still works (that you don't use) I encourage anybody to do this. I hated the keyboard and mouse for Halo. It just didn't feel right.

Mouse and keyboard are meant for FPSs.

Whether or not you believe that is irrelevant.

I can't stand the horrid controls. It isn't natural to me.

For me, playing a video game without a controller is wrong. Especially Halo.

dude, the Xbox 360 controller is USB, and Microsoft made it compatible w/ computers with just a driver download. Halo plays pretty well on it.

the yellow wire is to tell the xbox that the controller is still in because we all know the xbox pauses when the controller is unpluged.

Yet also tremendously expensive. Since I don't own an Xbox 360 (yet), I would be buying a 360 controller just for the PC. They cost like, 35 dollars. This old ass Xbox controller was a few dollars. The USB cable was a few dollars. It works just as well.

Nice. How hard was it to splice the wires?

At first, it was tremendously difficult, because I tried to do it on my own. The black and red were too thick to do it properly, and the green and white were too thin and I couldn't get a good grip on them.

However, I called my roommate over later, and he held each respective end close to one other. I was able to crokscrew the wires together quite easily then.

Therefore, if you are to do this, let someone help you. It's particularly frustrating when you are removing the rubber holdings of the wires and accidently cut the whole wires. (Green and white are so damn thin)

-You can only get a bunch of tries with the USB, because you could very well start at the other end of it, and work your way (with enough mistakes) to the other side. It gives you plenty of breathing room.
However, with the Xbox controller's cord, you really only have one or two tries. Because there is a very limited amount of space between the end (which you will expose) and the start of the mid-cable junction.

10 minute job if you don't have wire strippers? Absolutely not.
Worth it for Halo PC? Hell yeah.

You should sodder the wires togather. It's prety easy and you couldn't pull it apart very easily.

That's if I had a soldering iron. I'm in a college dorm. The best we have are knives and duct tape.

I'm preaty sure you can use the 360 controller. I read about it on xbox.com and read it Game Informer.

I've been thinking about adding a USB end to my controller. I have a controller I got from Wal-Mart, but it sucks big ones. I can't stand the keyboard/mouse either. It's hard to turn and I can't remember what each button does.

But, If the 360 controller does infact work with the PC, then I'll use that instead.

Did you all read the previous posts? He knows, but it costs much more. This project was for a low-cost controller, not a simple go-buy-it one.

This is just as good as the Xbox 360 controller, except a tenth the cost and ten times the feeling of satisfaction when it works.
