Subject: Is it possible to actually have an orbital drop pod?

What if I told you...

Is it possible to drop reinforcements from pods, like ODSTs?

The pods do have thrusters and parachutes to slow the pod down, but the weight of the pod and the speed it's going at, I think the force of impact would be too strong for the human body to handle, so much that necks will snap upon impact, if it were Spartans, they would probably survive the drop(with armor and all), but an ODST would have they're neck broken upon impact. Is they're a component to the pod that I am missing that will prevent serious injuries?. If so, tell me.

In my understanding, it is physically possible, just not feasibly possible. Also bear in mind that 500 years in the future there will probobly be tech that will help with making the desent less dangerous IE slowing the pod down.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

It would probably be a one-use deal.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

There's not much information on the drop pods, but the snapping of the neck is probably possible. Also, like inweb said, they probably have some technology to prevent that from happening.

It would be cool to have drop pod respawn in multiplayer. :D

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

I'm sure it's possible, but right now, we dont have the tech to make it a sure way.

Not that we need it anyways right now...

~Emothic Von Hellsing of ze Hellsing Family, ODST serial # 20091260.
~Truly, if I was any better, I would be a spartan. But I choose to be an ODST.~

I'm sure they had several safty measures. Like for the neck for instance. They probably had some sort of magnet to hold the helment in one place to prevent the neck from making a dramatic movement.

Sorry for horrible spelling and grammar.

A lot of people were hoping for that in Firefight for Reach, but oh well.

I am...whimsical today.

As long as they're going slow enough when they impact the ground, and the trooper is properly cushioned against the impact, I don't foresee much of a problem.

That idea came up with the Bip Bap Bam ViDoc of Johnson landing in an HEV right?

if it's a 400 pound pod(I'm guessing),being launched at high speeds from orbit, even thrusters and parachute built in, it won't stop the pod, if a car crash can break a neck, I'm pretty sure slamming into the ground in a metal box will.

They also need to take in wind in to consideration, if they activates thrusters in high wind, the pod will go on it's side, thrusters will only make it worse.

Also known as Entropy91
Black Water Ops representative.
See you on the battlefield.

We've been doing soemthing pretty similar to that since the 1960s, so it's definitely possible. However, with current technology, it's highly impractical.

During a drop in universe, the pod has two mechanisms to slow descent. At 3000 feet, the main drag chute opems, slowing descent. At about 50m, a set of retro rockets activates, further slowing descent. This is why the ODSTs don't die on impact (most of the time). In Halo 2, the pods were seen touching down at a relatively low speed due to these rockets.

The pod is also balanced to always point downward, and likely weighs a couple tons, at least

We'll find a way, we always have.

Oh Yeah Megan Fox! And Final Instinct are pr0

Probably not. Well for starters the cost would be outrageous to have to build one for every ODSt on a ship and then have multiples due to "one and done".

Also you have to think of landing... how do you direct it? at the speed at which it will probably be going and it will be going fast because you dont want AAA fire hitting it while its "floating" down, would be probably a tad to fast for most humans to correctly land properly.

Take this for instance you drop a toy with a bottle rocket stapped to his feet from the empire state building. using your timing you need to accuratly guide him to inside one square of sidewalk... most of the times its not going to hit. actually it probably wont every hit, but nothing is every absolute.

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

... we've had it since the 60's. It's what the astronauts used in reentry.

Good point. But that's when falling in water, I mean when smashing into concrete or dirt.

  • 01.13.2011 5:53 PM PDT

So that's how it is. You all ought to know better than that.

We could make it work. I'm not so sure about having retro rockets because of the needed space to carry fuel. It would require multiple parachutes like the apollo command module to slow it down enough. If there are retro rockets, they would have to fire a couple feet above the ground for a soft landing.

Sounds like the Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

Welcome to the HALO Nation

I agree with ME7ALMAR7IAN777, but I am sure the pods still have an uncomfortably high failure rate based that on a few things:

In Halo 2 those ODSTs who landed on Delta Halo with the Master Chief there were quite a few dead in their pods which I don't believe was because of being shot although the enemy fire may have messed with the drop.

H3:ODST the troopers were scattered all over New Mombasa and I think they were "lucky" at best to survive.

Honestly, I'm looking more towards the "Section 8"-style Orbital Drop.

Powered Combat Armor will eventually HAVE to become a reality, and as the technology improves, I could see the armored suits being able to survive reentry.

Stopping the soldier safely is relative child's play.

  • 01.13.2011 11:21 PM PDT

i dont think it would be logical mostly because it would take a lot longer then dropping para troopers i think it would also be way too expensive to produce the type of pod needed especially for a whole squad or platoon.

Am I supposed to write something funny here?

The other troopers died because they were gonna land on the carrier and it jumped out, disintegrating the pods.

BTW, surviving pods were EMP'd and they all survived. Even Buck, who went trough several buildings and landed upside down.
