I believe even though technically created (more as an accident than anything from a certain bacteria the flood was somehow created by the precursors to punish the forerunners for rising against and destroying or simply driving the precursors away.

yes sorry should have made that more obvious. I came to this conclusion after the last page of the book where it talks about what the last precursor said to Didact.

does the Captive (The last Precursor) have any relation to the Gravemind?

Fudge-is-tastey!!!!!!!!!

Actually, I believe the last Precursor(The Captive) becomes the Gravemind after it comes into contact with the Flood on the Halo that devastated Charum Hakkor. Once they came into contact the Captive decided to bond with the Flood probably knowing that he would be able to control them and evolve them even farther as weapons.

Ya, because in the book it described the Captives head as a large hideous flower, exactly like the Gravemind's. But the problem was that they didn't describe him to have a green appearance, but something more like a human. So I think that it makes sense that he took over the Flood to gain more knowledge, spread himself everywhere, and to enact revenge upon the Forerunners.
