Subject: Ever create a new tactic or strategy while playing Halo?

Near the beginning of Two Betrayals you need to get to the bottom of the temple to grab the Banshee and there are plenty of elites and not enough sniper ammo. I was trying to take the elites out with long range pistol fire but was frustrated by them moving around or taking cover when their shields got low. I tried the old 'Plasma Overcharge' trick but the bolt doesn't lock on and would miss. I did notice that the bolt flew straight and true. I retreated further up the temple, 2nd tier at least, zoomed in with the pistol, swapped for the Plasma Pistol, charged it up and let it fly. Like I hoped, it whacked the elite and my follow up head shot with the pistol dropped him in his tracks. He acted like he never saw it coming.
I called it the 'trailer park sniper' option.
I guess that elites don't respond to incoming fire at a certain distance even if they see it coming.
I tried the same thing in H2 with the Jetpack elites and they seem to have learned and easily dodged the incoming plasma bolt.

Anybody have similar experiences where they stumbled up something or dreamed up an unusual tactic?

Lots of things. The game has been out since 2001, there are so many things to list...

I'll come back when I'm not posting from my phone.

Great post, there are not enough of this kind of post these days!

There are a number of people who have found some very creative ways to play Halo, Grumpy and Bad Cyborg in particular, expanding the overall experience to new heights.

Since I play campaign only, I am always on the lookout for things to make the gameplay interesting, found a few:

1-Using the PP as a long range (albiet low powewr) sniper rifle. The single pings from a PP will travel farther than any other "round" other than a rocket or sniper rifle round. You can use this to work from exceptionally long distances on stationary targets like: Wraiths, Shade Gunners, certain Hunters and sleeping Grunts (well till they wake up). The cool thing about the fired round is that it sinks in elevation the farther it travels. The trick is to find the right aiming point to score your hits and defeat your foe. The sound of the individual shots ringing off of a Hunter's armor is especially nice!

2-Really long distance Plasma Sticks are incredibly gratifying, especially against strolling Elites. Seeing them turn and dance when they get stuck from a completely unseen enemy is one of the best feelings you can have playing Halo. PG's can run short quick, best make them count. It is not as much fun, but it is interesting that half of the time they do not see a PG that drops close to them, not even bothering to dodge it before it sends them off on their merry Great Journey a bit earlier than they expected!

3-Walking as much of the game as possible, no use of vehicles except where absolutely needed to reach elevated goals like platforms. Never using a vehicle weapon happens along with this, not even a chain gunner. It can make the game quite interesting.

4-Never taking advantage of certain weapons like the RL and SR, or having to use certain weapons like the AR or PR for a whole level or more. That can definately change your thinking on how you approach battles.

Yeah sure.

1. On Assault on the Control Room on Heroic and Legendary, at the area with the two Hunters (they only appear on Heroic and Legendary),

Lure a Hunter to the elevator and to the other side and then activate it. If you did it correctly, the Hunter shouldn't go down with the elevator. He should be stuck on the ledge. Get close and he'll attempt to melee you and fall to his death.

You can also trap one behind the activation panel and melee him without having to worry about him hitting you.

This is only useful if you made it so that Hunters can't be killed by 1 shot to the back and if you want to make a return trip (i.e. for Pistol ammo).

Otherwise, one shot to the back will take care of them. This is just for creativity.

2. On any level with a Zealot, overcharge a plasma pistol, wait for him to get close to you, then blast him and go around him and assassinate. Here is a video of this.

3. On Assault on the Control Room, you know that fall thing you can do at the bridge? Most people go left but I like to go right (to keep Banshee fire minimal). Go on the ledge, face the door on the other side, move right carefully, when you fall, hold left and up. Then do the fall thing and go down. Then get in the Warthog and get one of the three active marines in the turret to get rid of the Banshee. Then go to the Scorpion Tank. It's possible to get it up the ledge and it will be useful in this area later.

Here is a video showing some of my strategies. Aside from the Early Banshee glitch, the latter part of the bridge fall, the use of a Ghost as a obstruction, and the bypassing door thing, the tactics I demonstrate are original.

And here is a neat loading glitch I found.
