I originally posted this in another thread, but before anyone could discuss the maker asked for the thread to be locked.

Everyone maybe going in the wrong direction with the "Save The Underground" campaigns. The 'old skool' Underground that many have loved for a long time has evolved into something new. Many people like the new underground, and many people don't. But both sides have a reason, 'Halo 3'.

So I say instead of trying to bring back the old underground, try and help improve the new young underground. The main 'problem' i see is that many useless Halo 3 threads are being made, the reason there useless? All because they've been posted before. Instead of fighting over it, organize some sort of ultimate Halo 3 threads, combine all thats been posted before on a Halo 3 subject (Such as Weapons, Levels etc.) and make one specific thread about said subject.

That way members who use the underground will hopefully see these threads and either A. Have there question answered, or B. Have a thread to ask their question in, instead of making a new one.

Dude, that whole thing is over. We are going in a whole new direction, before you even mentioned this. And I think this has been suggested before, I know for a FACT that this thing you are speaking of is in the Largest Halo 3 Group out there. They use this method of orgainization and its worked.

So yea.

I suggested the method over the last half year a number of times (three, if I remember correctly). One of those times, a moderator kindly told me the reason that such an idea would not be acceptable. What he said was that creating a thread specifically to discuss Halo 3 would be seen by some idiots as a confirmation of Halo 3, and could not be done. Due to the gullible nature a VAST MAJORITY of people who frequent this site, I think he had a point.

I think you're misunderstanding. They wouldn't be sticky's. They'd simply be there.

Actually, the problem Banshee Barron discussed (that Bungie cannot make a specific Halo 3 forum because the creation of it would directly imply that Bungie is working on Halo 3) is one of the real catch 22 situations affecting the Underground right now. The only solution is, of course, to wait it out until Bungie officially confirms or denies Halo 3.

Another part of the problem is that whether or not there are stickies, people will still flood the Underground with posts. We saw it with Halo 2. Even when there are stickies stating that topics do no belong in a certain forum, many of the members simply ignore forum rules and policies when posting. Therefore, even if Halo 3 stickies were made, they would not solve the problem.

I do not recognize a "new" Underground and an "old" Underground. It is still the Underground, Halo 3 posts or not. The problem with Halo 3 topics is that they usually do not break any forum rules, yet don't really have a home of their own. Also, until Bungie officially announces their next project, they must be very careful in how they respond to many of them since every speck of information, no matter how trivial, will blow up into a major incident. Therefore, the best thing for Bungie to do is ignore them, which means we have to put up with them until Bungie makes an official move.

The best way to try to put the oldschool back into the Underground is merely to make more good Oldschool posts. That is what we should be trying to do to help the Underground.

Devil is Double is Deuce and Joker always trumps Deuce.

Even if there isn't a Halo 3, which I won't believe until Bungie says there is, I still think that the best way to 'clean up' the Underground would be to condense all the Halo 3 threads. They simply take up too much space, and there are at least 10 new ones each day, all repeating that same tired messages. "New weapons". "New enemies". "New vehicles". Etc., etc., etc.

Another problem I see with the Underground is that many new users mistake it for the Community, 7th Column, and bungie.net discussion forum. (Ie., they mistake it for The Septagon.) Perhaps we should make The Septagon first in the forum order on the side nav bar and the forum page?

Hmm. I like this idea more then the last one but I still don't see a need for it. If the majority like the underground the way it is then who are we, the minority, to change that? It's not even that big a deal. Just join a group if you really want to.

They already are, and it ain't working. People insist on making new topics about it.

The simplest solution is just to have Bungie announce their next project(which was supposed to happen before the end of October).

Halo 3 topics are like homeless people, except that I have no reason to feel sympathy for them.

What really ticks me off is that it's an unwinnable situation. If you create stickies for Halo 3 discussion, you create a royal butt load of "BUNGEE CONFIMRS HALO 3" posts, and if you try to contribute with Bungie oldschool threads, or "end all" Halo 3 threads, you gut buried in a matter of minutes.

Right now, I don't see anything that can be done other than accept the forum in it's current state. Appearantly, the forum is working as intended by Bungie- you might as well give it a new name while you're at it because it's now an entirely new forum.

How about: Rumor ground, or the Take-A-Guess-Ground?

Or even better: The Unconfirmed Crap house.

I'm rather partial to:

"Dumping Ground"

and

"Halo 3 Playground"

I think it would be funny if they made a Halo 3 forum and didn't release Halo 3 :P

Well, it was sort of unofficial. It was in either the last, or second to last update in August. Frankie said that they would announce the next project "within the next couple of months." Couple=2. 2 months later=October.

2nd Last WU in August 2005
Last WU of August 2005

Neither of those mentions anything about announcing their next game. The closest it comes is in the August 19 update when Frankie says "What about our new project? Well, it's coming along swimmingly. I see cool things every day. More on that much later." Which tells you nothing really.

Try not to drink so much of the radioactive yellow liquid next time Kilroy.

As for "saving" the underground, a couple of things. The Underground is primarily a Bungie general forum. The whole "Underground=oldschool only" thing seems to have arisen mostly because of the growth, over the last year and a half or so, of the pervasive idea that if you play old-school Bungie games, you're better than other people, and therefore you own the Underground and wouldn't the world be a better place if all the people who want Halo 3 were to be locked in a cage made of cheese. Or stainless steel.

Anyway, the point is, the Underground isn't an old-school forum. It never was. Back before the new hotness it was the only non-7th column discussion forum around, so people posted Halo topics, Halo 2 speculation, and yes, even Halo 3 speculation for some reason. Now and then someone would mention Oni, and since it wasn't cool to be remotely old-school back then (even taking into account that during the time I'm talking about, like, 2002, Oni had only been out for a year or so), they would be ignored and regarded as slightly dangerous.

What should be done, most likely, is either one of two things.

* Create a dedicated old-school Bungie forum. Call it the Pyramid or something, or the Labyrinth, or heck, why not Iraq (though that might be misinterpreted in the current geopolitical climate).

* Create a "Halo general" forum, which would be a kind of limited version of the Underground, where you can talk about anything Halo-related which isn't specifically about Halo 1, Halo 2, Halo 2 multiplayer, or matchmaking playlists. I'm talking books, big galaxy-spanning whacko theories, and yes, speculation regarding possible future Halo games.

That, or we could all wait until Bungie announces their next game. Just don't expect them to do it last October.
