As much as I hate to say it, the Halo franchise needs to end. As much as I love all of the games, I really don't want to see the whole franchise ruined like what happened to Call of Duty.
Unfortunately, I agree. I would rather see Halo die off than to see it whored out by Micro$oft. I am, though, cautiously optimistic about 343i. I've also seen Legends. It was somewhat painful for me. I haven't read Evolutions, but the fact that they split it into 2 books and only added a grand total of 2 new stories to their "Volume II" has pretty much put off any interest I may have previously had in buying it. That made it abundantly clear (not that it wasn't already) that profit was their main concern. However, I will give 343i the benefit of the doubt when it comes to their first game, although I'm not getting my hopes up. Quite frankly, I think Halo 2 was probably the best Halo game, and 343i has a lot to do to make an honest-to-goodness Halo game that is driven by story and character rather than sales figures and aggressive ad-campaigns.
I loved Halo. I still do, actually, but I love it for the story. I always have. But it seems after Halo 2, the quality of the story really started to decline. I enjoyed Halo 3, and it did have an entertaining and emotional story, but Reach made WAY too many breaks from canon. I didn't really care for any of the members of Noble Team. They were, in my opinion, rather flat characters (especially Carter). I did not feel the same things when they died as I did when Miranda died, and Johnson died, because I cared about Miranda and Johnson. They had dimension. They weren't just box-cover decorations.
But at the end of the day, Micro$oft is a business. Their goal is to make a profit, and the truth is that anything with the word "Halo" on it will bring in millions of dollars a year. From their standpoint, they'd have to be stupid not to take advantage of it. Although they could have done it in a way that was more respectful to the product itself. I don't want Halo to be reduced to a money-making tool.
I fear it has come to that now.
