Subject: Is DNA recognition possible?

Much of the technology in the Halo universe is possible, if not present, in today's world. For example, voice command and many of the UNSC weapons are present today in one form or another. However, one aspect of the Halo universe that I find particularly interesting is DNA recognition. It is DNA recognition that means only a human may activate a Halo Installation, and in Halsey's journal (the one that comes with the Limited Edition of Halo: Reach) Halsey mentions that...

'It would be simple enough to implant a small strip of nanocene explosive into the clasp and key it to my DNA; but as much as I might enjoy seeing one of my minders walking about a few fingers short, I'll likely employ something a tad more refined.'

My question is simple. Is it possible, or how would it be possible, for DNA recognition to occur in such a manner as it happens in the Halo universe? This is something that I have never fully understood, and any suggestions or theories you have would be of great interest to me.

As this is my first forum topic in the Bungie.net forums, I'd appreciate it if everybody played nice and there wasn't too much flaming.

Discussion is welcome.

Message me if you want, I will try to get back as soon as possible.

See you on the forums and in the games.

I would think it's possible. DNA is a genetic form of a fingerprint and many genomes of DNA have been identified. It's probably about just putting the technology together. However, at the moment I don't think the tech exists.

We can do DNA testing today, so it's obviously possible; the speed at which they do it, and getting DNA from bare traces of skin samples (or, in the case of the Chief activating the array, lord knows what; he was in full-body armor) is only an improvement upon what we can do already.

Thanks for your answers guys, and also Lord Snakie you bring up a very valid point about MC activating the array, never thought about his gloves :P

It's probably possible.

Oh and I just saw an article today saying that we will see invisible tanks and soldiers in about five years.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

I say yes. We already have security devices that can recognize fingerprints and eyes, so DNA might not be too far off.

They can match blood to it's owner. Also hair. And skin cells! They can do loads with DNA, they just need a sample...

I guess it should be 500 years in the future considering the growing power of computers and advances in medicine.

lol 5 years?

try in the next year.

metamaterial cloaking exists. and the Canadian and American millitaries have started using it.

it's not perfect but it's pretty awesome

No we aren't going to have invisible tanks next year. Sure we will have better prototypes that cost ridiculous sums of cash to run for 5 seconds, but nothing in war.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.

Yes, but that process takes several weeks at least. And that's if they have a complete, in-tact sample. However, I'm sure that in 500 years time, we might have some kind of technology that can identify someone's DNA and match it with a copy on-file in a matter of seconds, but that's a little demanding.

I hadn't thought of that. I thought it had something to do with the shape of a human's hand, but then, why wouldn't they cut off a hand and use it?

Billy Mays here with another fantastic offer

I was always under the impression that it wasn't necessarily DNA recognition, but some sort of supersensory recognition that the computers have built into them that allows them to recognize a reclaimer. I mean, 343 recognized MC as a reclaimer without actually touching him.

My jokes, so I don't lose them (ignore this):
ZedFish's Opinion on Sgt. Foley.
ZedFish's Forerunner Rickroll.

I'd say it's going to just be an evolution of fingerprint technology.
But, instead of reading the fingerprint on the surface, it'd look much deeper into the actual nucleus of skin cells and check out the DNA without actually removing it.
Or, I'm a raving lunatic. Either way, I'm happy.

I'm saying that they will be rolling onto the battlefields in 5 years. Now, we just have prototypes and such. Not anything to go into combat with.

Well considering they (Halo Universe, so to speak) are quite a while into the future and were not and we already have a kind of DNA recognision in computers (fingerprint(s) swiping, etc.) I'd say yeah, it would/will/is possible for DNA recognition.

  • 01.19.2011 9:06 AM PDT

I am a monument to all your sins

we use DNA recognition in CSI labs all the time to identify individuals, identifying a species would be easy even by to day's standards. As for it being non-invasive in Halo, Im sure they analize shed skin cells or something.

Actually, there has been testing, and there have been invisible-like tanks.
