Eagle 117, have you read the books? If you have you should remember this quote:
"Your destrution is the will of the gods,
and we are their instrument."
That sentence alone proves that they are fighting a holy war, it may be a holy war just to get some Forerunner artefact on Earth, but seeing as they treat the Forerunner as gods, it is a holy war to get the artefact.
Yes, I have read all the books, and I know that quote of yours very well. I would argue, or ask, why or how do the Prophets, the politicians and spiritual leaders who set the agenda in the Covenant empire, EXCLUSIVLY know what the Gods will is??? I would also say, that when you are told this quote in the book, it is when the Humans have first contact with the Covenant... the first communication between the Covenant and Humans that we the reader are made aware of. It is a message from a Covenant ship to a Human ship, correct? My point being, if the Prophets are holding some sort of fake religion over the rest of the Covenant species so that they can retain power and control, then the rest of the Covenant species are going to know that they are being manipulated. They are going to believe that they are partaking in what the Gods(Forerunners) want, which, again, the Prophets tell the "will of the Gods" to the different Covenant species (factions). This, not knowing the true intentions of the Prophets, makes you the reader assume that the Covenant are on some religious jihad. Bungie doesn't want to give you the reader/player to many clues to a potential plot twist... why would they want to give that away?
You might also say, what if it was a Prophet who sent that message? I would say that broadcasting the Prophets true intentions, the one's I'm accusing them of having, would first off not be a very frightning first contact message. But most importantly, that broadcast was on an open broadcast channel... otherwise the Humans wouldn't have be able to decipher it. The Prophets wouldn't want the crew of the ship, or any other Covenant vessels in the area, although I don't recall there being any others in the area, to know their true intentions. The Prophets can't controll the different factions/species of the Covenant Empire. They can only hope to give these factions an illusion, and this illusion gives the factions a neverending purpose and reason to follow orders from the Prophets... not the Forerunners!
I have to go.. I'll try to update this later, because I'm sure that there are misspelled words and such.
