If I remember correctly, the regenerators would regenerate their power armor if it was partially damaged.

That said, you have a good point, and I think the real reason was to have a method of getting the regenerators to the player.

Regens did regenerate their power armor...Assuming it's still on by the time they deploy it of course.

Edit: I think a better question is 'Why didn't Marines use Bubble Shields at all'? Sure they were heavy, but damn would it have been neat to see a team of marines use it in a smart situation. Like deploying one as a team while waiting for extraction or to survive a wraith bombardment on their position.
