"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

As I have wondered around Zanzibar, I have seen a lot of people break or fracture rules. Naturally I try to help out where I can, but two things have come to my attention, and bring up questions:

1) We all know the dreaded n-word. The one that originally meant a new player, but has now simply degenerated into a derogatory term for anyone that someone else thinks isn't good at a game. I've noticed that often threads are locked simply for its use, which brings up my question: Is use of the n-word itself not allowed, or is it only not allowed in cases where it is used as a derogatory term?

2) We all know the rule about providing links to profane content. Don't do it, or a blacklisting will immediately occur. Last night Yoozel and I had a little trouble with a couple of members getting past their blacklistings. One of these members was arguing that the link to the cartoon in Yoozel's sig is content that should not be allowed, and that Yoozel is over-looked because he is a mod. I was arguing with him via the PM system about whether or not he is right, and I do still think he is wrong, but it does bring up two questions: A) Is the cartoon not allowed by the rules? B) When does content cross the line into profane?

Thank you for your time.

Pax vobiscum.

1. The word is forbidden. Your thread will probably be locked or your post will be deleted if you use it. It's not hard to refrain from saying it, so don't.

2. Try reading through the Code of Conduct and Terms of Use again in addition to the rules. If you don't think it should be posted on the site it probably shouldn't be. If you still can't decide, ask a moderator about it before you post it.

I have on a few occasions used the word, but never as a derogatory term. I don't even view it as a real word, and always put it in quotations.

As for the profane content, I read over both, but didn't really find what I was looking for.

To tell the truth, Yoozel's cartoon really doesn't belong here. I know that Yoozel is a highly respected mod and I'm just a lowly member, but I can't disagree with the fact that the cartoon is a bit too profane.

Hence the reason why I ask. The word in the cartoon is in no way "profane" as defined by Webster.

Then again, I guess this could fall under the short version of the CoC.

1. The word is forbidden. You probably won't get blacklisted or even warned if you don't use it in a harsh manner, but my opinion is: It's not hard to refrain from saying it, so just don't.

If you use it then your post will probably be locked/deleted (unless it's a quote, of course). If you keep using it then the punishment will be harsher.

And Yoozel isn't being treated any differently to how any other member would be treated. If another user posted a link to a similar cartoon then the thread wouldn't be locked/deleted, and the user wouldn't be banned.

It seems like I have recieved answers for two of my questions. Thank you guys.

The first question came up for the reason that I saw someone use the word in a context that was not one that was derogatory. His thread was locked by Recon for that reason. I PMed him with the question, but never recieved an answer. However, this brings up another question, "Do the mods actually look at the context of the word, or does the word need to be put in quotes when it is not used as a derogatory term for it to be okay?"

It has also been brought to may attention that though the cartoon in Yoozel's sig is not a violation of the rules (as I suspected), the defining line of what breaks the rules and what doesn't in this department has still not been well-drawn.

Can anyone help me out on this?

Bungie.net explodes. Try it at home, kids*!

For deciding whether or not the links in the sigs are all right, I think that as long as it is not graphic, or something incredibly offensive(racism and the like) then it would be considered acceptable.

You don't have to click the link in Yoozel's sig. If you do, and you find the content offensive, all you have to do is close the window. If it still bothers you, take it to Achronos. If he agrees with you, Yoozel will have to take it out. If he sides with Yoozel, then you'll have to drop it.

Only the paranoid will survive!

Is this the link you were talking about? If it is, I think you were just looking for something to catch the mods on. If that had been in any other member's profile would you have made a point of it? I very much doubt it.

I had a link in my sig at one point that led to a image with the "F Bomb" in it and I wasn't banned. So obviously, this is isn't something they will ban you for.

Nice try though.

yoo•zel- ('yoo-zhul): slang: vb.

Officium quod Fidelitas.

The whole n-word debate… well generally I lock threads that over use it or users who use it get banned because they’ve tied in a nice number of blams! with it as well. Our preference is that people don’t use it, but since it’s so wide spread, it’s hard to control on a by-case study and thus it must be taught through making examples of people.

As for my cartoon… well, Halo is given a rating of 17+ and thus content over that can contain the word in question. It’s really hard to build a defense for this, if someone is offended there’s no way around it. But the fact is you’re not going to get banned for linking to things that have the eff-word in it. There are a few exceptions too that, but people know not to link to pornographic content or worse.

Code of Conduct
Microsoft or its affiliates (collectively, the "Bungie Web Sites").
The Bungie Web Sites and the services provided therein are not to be used to transmit any unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, hateful or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable content, as determined by any Bungie Web Sites employee, designee or admin. This includes material which a user may find embarrassing or which may cause distress, unwanted attention or discomfort to them. It also includes vulgar and abusive language, even when masked by symbolic characters, and includes login names, screen names and club names.

That’s the real kicker, but then again… it’s catch-22. If you are that offended by it… take it to Achronos, like someone mentioned above.

Thanks guys. It appears that all of my questions have been answered. This thread naturally no longer serves a purpose, so whichever mod reads this can lock it.
