Its graphics are fine. They require some acclimation, but once you're into the flow and style of it it's a gorgeous game.
I actually like its aesthetics more than those of later Halo games; the textures look good, the animations are organic, and visual design is simple-geometry instead of the cluttered mess you get in all games these days. And a cluttered mess is what it would become with a complete overhaul.
I was there in early 2002, and as much as people these days say that "the graphics were very good for their time", I definitely recall being infinitely more impressed by the visual style than the graphical power.
In any case, it's still more stare-worthy than almost any other game out there.
I wouldn't necessarily hate a strictly graphical remake, since I always have my old disc(s) to resort to if it isn't perfect, but I'd rather 343i do something more important. The only thing that would make me get extremely excited over a complete HCE rebuild would be a precise remake (no gameplay or graphical differences) but ported properly to the 360's hardware and with good online netcode and live access. But that's not going to happen because that's not how remakes work, so I'm hoping 343i finds something more useful to do.
