Subject: what is the chiefs rank???

i noticed today that there is a navy rank called "master chief petty officer". another rank is called "master chief petty officer of the navy". these are enlisted ranks and the people with these titles are NCOs (non-commissioned officers). i always thought the chief was a commissioned officer. what rank is the chief and is that rank related to john-117's nickname. if he is a master chief petty officer it would make sense for his nickname to be master chief obviously.

Master Chief Petty Officer is a rank IN the Navy. A Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy is the exact same rank.

Master Chief Petty Officer's are typically the top NCO for a ship. Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy is the head NCO in the entire Navy.

CoD is a good game, even if the Halo series are better in some aspects. Anyone who insults either is just bad in that game. Grow up.

It depends on what time period you're talking about, OP. John-117 was a Master Chief Petty Officer during the events of Halo: CE to Halo 3, but he was promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy at the end of Halo 3.

Quote/Moto:
"Animal's don't start wars, who's the real animals?"
"An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth." - The notion that for every wrong done there should be a compensating measure of justice.

He's named after his rank.

smart, interesting, seems out of place.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

Master Chief Petty Officer John-117. I have no life.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

The Chief is an NCO.

His name isn't Master Chief everypne just calls him by his rank

  • 01.19.2011 4:53 PM PDT

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

What if he ranks up?

Lol, would they have to revert back to S-117

And what if someone else also held the rank of Master Chief in Halo.

Would they be called MC as well?

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Petty Officer Master Chief.

There must be other people in the Haloverse with the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer, it's a rank in the military, so it is almost guaranteed that there are more.

Master Chief is probably just a nickname given to him since so few people know his name.

When the Spartans were first being formed the ONI wanted them to be always under the control of "regular" officers, so they purposfully gave them low rank compared the level of training and experience they have. There have been several Spartans given commissions, notably Kurt-051 when training the Spartan IIIs.

Spartan John-117 was posthumously promoted to MCPO of the Navy. I hear it's fancier.

Everything will be gone long before me. When the first living thing was born, I was here, waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job is finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave.

He won't rank up, since any higher rank is just a desk job. Can you imagine John filing papers while a Covenant invasion takes place? I'm sure other people have that rank too, but based on context everyone probably knows if they're talking about a regular Master Chief or John.

  • 01.19.2011 8:17 PM PDT

No. Commisioned Officers serve in the Navy SEALs and in Halo, other Spartans (Noble 6) were commissioned and definitly did not have desk jobs.

  • 01.19.2011 8:22 PM PDT

After halo 3, he should recieve two million credits for that inclimate weather effect and be automaticly an inheritor

Whooo!!! The Master Chief lives on!!!!

Master Chief is probably just a nickname given to him since so few people know his name.

... He is the Master Chief.

Hello?

They don't call him John. They call him Master Chief, like you'd call a Lieutenant a Lieutenant, and not Bob.

RIP Ginger
