What was the point in delivering the fragment of Cortana to Captain Keyes in Halo Reach? The game made it seem like she held vital information about the Halos, while the book simply states that Cortana was ordered to initiate the Cole protocol. In doing so, she 'remembers' the rock that was discovered on Cotes d'Azure, and how the symbols looked similar to an astronav map, and uses them for the slip space jump exit vector.

because Halsey had figured out how to plug an AI back into a human brain (Master Chief's, who obviously had been augmented for the purpose), and this would be 'game changing' for the war

Spartan + AI ( + Assembly) = unstoppable force

proof? the games themselves are proof. you take down the Covenant and Flood pretty much singlehandedly, with Cortana

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

She held vital information on the Forerunners. Information that could turn the tide of the war givin enough time.

Time I doubt the UNSC had. Good thing they found Halo.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

We don't know any details about what information Cortana and Halsey decrypted fom the Latchkey Artefact, other than that it was going to be a "gamechanger" in the H/C war... What an awful unfulfilled plot point...

  • 01.20.2011 11:21 AM PDT

It's not unfilled, you just need to dig a but for the answer

She'd used Forerunner science to allow an AI be mapped onto a human brain, which would allow the Spartans to be vastly more effective, leading to an upper hand over the covenant. See: Masterchief

The data pads tell you this

Are you guys missing the real answer?

Noble 6 did not need to deliver Cortana because Cheif should have already had her, in The Fall of Reach Cheif went on a training mission, already having Cortana in his armor, then the Pillar left. Thats before the invasion, the pillar was headed out of system when the Reach invasion force rolled in system, Keyes had to turn around and go back to reach to defend it.

If you dont believe me, turn to chapter 28 in The Fall of Reach.

your right. Six isn't delivering all of Cortana, only an extra part of her. A part Halsey designed after she gave Cortana to Master Chief.

I believe you, but you need to read Halseys journal. N6 wasn't delivering Cortana, he was delivering a fragment of her, a fragment that was studying the artifact under Sword base.

I do realize this but if the Pillar left before the invasion and was in orbit the whole time the battle was going on how exactly could 6 have delivered anything?

Game Canon > Book Canon, with that in mind that's the one detail that got overwritten. The Pillar was on Earth, not in space.

I think you will find Cortana saved the universe from Halo being fired in Halo CE when Spark almost got the chief to do it

Sorry I just prefer the canon that Bungie endorsed and at one time agreed with to the unnecessary re-wright of a perfectly good story.

Because having a game that's somewhat satisfying is better than having a story that makes sense.

Microsoft endorsed it, we know that Bungie never owned the Halo IP, therefore the books were never written with the approval or cooperation of anyone from Bungie.

They're game designers, it's like Firemen asking for their advice, different professions that aren't related.

Go figure, I guess Bungie just likes taking the hard way out and making their own story rather than following Nylund's.

Well Nylund is just as bad, he knew that the rules were that only one Spartan would be involved in the main storyline of the Halo trilogy. But when he wrote First Strike he had 4 Spartans coming to Earth.

When Halo 2 released and only the Chief was present, some people blamed Bungie but they should have blamed Nylund IMO.

The other Spartans' whereabouts on Earth are explained in Ghosts of Onyx.

Which came out 2 years after Halo 2. You have to realize that at the time people were yammering about the lack of mention of the other existing Spartans and how they seemed like throwaways. Much like how people yammered on about the humanish looking ruins in The Babysitter until Halo Evolutions and Cryptum came along to explain everything.

It's an annoyance that loose ends like that are left unanswered for long periods of time, but it'll eventually be tied up. Much like how it is taking 5 years to wrap up the events of The Ghost of Onyx. Possibly even longer..

It's Cortana, come on now.

  • 01.20.2011 1:01 PM PDT

Imo halo 2 and 3 woulda kicked a lot more ass if they incorporated nylunds spartans into it rather than do everything possible to exclude them.

Also, cortana had the coordinates to halo, thats why the package had to be delivered.

I disagree, the books were great but I think the storyline of the Halo trilogy games were all very good, my only criticism is that Bungie shouldn't have made the Arbiter a sidekick, he was an excellent character to play as in Halo 2.

But that's another matter.

At the end of Reach, Halsey said that with Six's help, they found Halo. I still don't know how that is a game changer. I mean, showing a genocidal group of zealots an ancient superweapon seems somewhat counterproductive in my eyes.

  • 01.20.2011 3:05 PM PDT

I disagree, imo the story of the games could be improved considerably. The epic factor was missing from a lot of the battles. We hear about these giant 500 ship covenant fleets, then at the end of all thing, at the climax of the entire story, when the covenant are about to acheive what they've gone to war with humans for 25 years over happens ---! not one but TWO scarabs!

Youd think the covenant would sacrifice all to protect the prophet. Imagine if the moment we got near the citadel the remaining covenant fleet over the ark abandoned what they were doing and immediately splispace ported directly over truths citadel on the arks, and likewise the elite ships followed them. Then while you were fighting the two scarabs on the ground this space battle of epic proportions was taking place right overhead.
