The pelican is that big; it's because it's not just a dropship, but also space-vessel.
It has to carry heavy vehicles, have life support, an airlock, a troop bay, a mini-fusion reactor if I'm not mistaken, and has to support itself in atmosphere (with VTOL and hovering capabilities) while also able of atmospheric reentry and reach escape velocity all without external assitance; it's like a space shuttle, the rocket surface-to-orbit constructions, a cargo plane and a transoprt helicopter all rolled into one.
It's actually tiny for what it can do. As to what else you refer to oversized, they all make sense when you actually look at what they can do in the canon.
