"A fad, sometimes called a trend, meme or a craze, is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period, generally as a result of the behavior's being perceived as novel in some way." - Wiki

I don't think it was, I do think Halo 1, Halo 3, Halo ODST, and Halo Reach are/were fads.

But Halo 2 wasn't, as the population had an extended period of large population doing it, Like 3 or so years and than it tanked to lower numbers in the thousands until it was pulled.

I think halo 2 was a legacy game the one game in the series that was the poster boy for Video games. It was what video games needed at the right time to launch video games as we now it today.

In some ways I wish it didn't happen though as Microsoft would have never made it in the video game sector without Halo 2 (and I don't think Microsoft is a morally good company and I wish they wouldn't be in the gaming market as they've made a mess of it). Bungie would have eventually made Halo 2 but not for Microsoft and we would have it online right now on a good server...

If I could vote for three in my own poll... I would vote for

A Game that changed video games
Best game in History of video games
A game that didn't last long enough

Bungie should allow multi-selections! lol

I agree, the length of time that H2 was popular went beyond fad. To me, it's the greatest game ever.

it definitely changed the face of online gaming forever. Anyone that says it didn't hasn't learned the history of online gaming. Specifically Online for console gaming. Sadly enough, though, to a lot of people, Halo 2 was a fad that ended with the introduction of Gears of War. It was much more than a fad for a lot of people (Such as myself) who always wanted to play Halo instead of any other game.

Anyone know if it's possible to make a Master Server for Halo 2? I don't know much about console online gaming's software, but, I know that after Starsiege Tribes lost its Master Server the fans were so dedicated that they made their own Master Server. I think it would be cool if Halo 2 fans did the same.

Firstly I would like to say without Halo 2 online I would not have bothered to get an online account,I agree with all the above comments as this game introduced the world to online gaming and what the potential was and now is the world of gamers and the gaming industry,I do not say this lightly as I work in Ireland as a software tester (not the gaming industry) but it has brought alot of jobs to everyone in the IT sector whether they like games or not,,,and yes GOW did attempt to challenge the Halo franchise but the Multiplayer was terrible but has got better with GOW 2...but Halo 2 started it all and maybe some people have forgot that,,,,

Grumpy, very sorry to read of your troubles, may you get back to us all here in the Halo 2 Forum soon..

God Bless and speed your recovery

halo 2 still the best game in the series. long live halo 2.

Dam, I miss the old days playing halo 2 with my old brothers in arms. Thank you my old friends for giving me this account, I shall continue our legacy.

Considering how long Halo 2 remained popular, it was not a fad. Cause fads usually die out and be forgotten after a very short period of time. Even now after xbox live support was cut for the xbox version people still play Halo 2 either through splitscreen, system link parties, Xlink Kai, Xbox Connect, and Halo 2 vista.

Halo 2 radically changed online gaming, and made online gaming into what it currently is now. It deserves to be called one of the greatest games in gaming history, considering the impact it made to online gameplay on console games.

Thanks Rio, well I'm back for a while and happy about that. I love this forum, good people here for the most part. Even though it's cyber friendships and interactions, there are real people at every computer so I appreciate a friendly site like this (and we get to talk about H2 and stuff).

Ah yes, my beloved Marines. One of these days, play OS and count the Marines as you go through the level, there's more than 18. Usually they vanish at the next loadzone or checkpoint, however, if you have Sputnik on you can move boxes and such to block their way. It's really fun to have that firepower at you disposal.

Start saving/stopping the Marines when the Pelican is supposed to pick up Sarge. A couple will vanish but most will still be there after you go get a checkpoint or hit a loadzone.

I can't tell you how many times I've been accused of modding to get those Marines. I thanked every accuser because I thought it was the highest complement they could give me.

I don't think I would consider it a fad simply because of how long it has/was been popular. Fad's tend to fade in and fade out, usually over a short period of time.

I also tend to notice that fads usually have something to do with clothes, words, etc. not games.

50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

It was a fad that faded out when h3 came out. Sure, people think it's revolutionary because it's the first game they played, but that's because of nolagista goggles.

The difference between most PC games and the Xbox is:

1. The xbox is locked down more, Everything is signed, so you would need a softmod or a private key to use it.
2. Xlive is pretty secure. No one has been able to hack it. A while ago, someone planned on creating a Phantasy Star Online server for the xbox. Due to the complexity, and that a softmod was required, they gave up, as they already had Gamecube, Dreamcast, and PC private servers.

That's also why all the modders used XBC + Kai instead.

3. If someone were to make it, it would be hard. Since no one really reverse engineered live due to it's complexity, they would have to make a hacked up halo 2 client. Not only would that take a lot of work, but you would need a softmod to run it, and due to it's reliance on the XDK, it would be illegal. Since no modder cares about h2 anymore, it won't happen.

tl;dr, with heavy hacking, softmods, and people who DO care (and don't just scream "I <3 H2" then sit back and beg), it might happen. The chances are very low however, as there is still not a PSO xbox private server (and that shut down in 2008)

Also, xbox is dead. No one cares about it anymore, so knock the chances down by 30 notches, as all the people who would help you write one moved on to the 360.

Halo 2 was by far the greatest game I've ever played, If Bungie would bring that game back it would be amazing they would make so much money and make their customers much happier. Lets face it, Reach is bad and Halo 3 was good but not as good as Halo 2, JUST REMAKE THE DAMN GAME. It would be a best seller I guarantee that.

Yeah, pretty much. The xbox is more complex then the PC or other consoles. Unlike most online services at the time, xbl was always encrypted to prevent reverse engineering, as it was a pay service and MS didn't want modders and cheapasses to join a private server.

I know it's highly unlikely, but, it could be possible for enough people to get together so that we can ask Microsoft to lend us the rights to create a private server with their help. I know, HIGHLY unlikely, but, it's something.

Halo 2 was by far the greatest game on the Original XBOX. Its a fact that Halo 2 was the BEST selling game on the Original Xbox..

When Halo 3 came out Halo 2 stayed strong.. A lot of People I know tested the H3 Beta and played it when it came out,
But.. They always came back to Halo 2 saying that Halo 3 was not the game they hoped for and that Halo 2 would always be there favorite.

That being said- Halo 2 was most certainly NOT a fad. It was an iconic game that changed the face of Online Gaming, First Person Shooters and not to mention Bungie.

For how many people still beg Bungie and Microsoft to Re-release/ Remake Halo 2, How can you argue that it was not the greatest game ever..
Nothing can touch the Legend that is Halo 2!!!!

BRING BACK HALO 2

Oh yea.. One more thing--

JacobGRocks,
Go Away!! Your not helping.. Your trolling!

Check the Poll. See that you are wrong, and move along.

Your input is not furthering the cause of Bringing back Halo 2. So just move along and play some Halo 3.

All projects are unoffical. MS isn't going to help. If anything, they would send you a cease and desist if they could. They crippled 360 lan play by making it so you have to have ping under 30ms or else you disconnect. Unless a jtag is the host.

Now back to the thread:

Best selling does not mean greatest. Justin bieber sells a lot too.

I didn't know xbox live had 100 people (your friends list) on. Eventually they got bored of playing with nobody and moved on.

Go Away!! Your not helping.. Your trolling!

Biased poll is biased. On the reach forum, it would be split, until the mods lock it. And if I made a Justin Bieber sucks poll on a justin bieber site, it's going to get votes saying "no he doesn't."

One last thing, Halo 2 = n00bified Halo 1. And it sucked too.

Your nostalgia goggles might be telling you it's good, but in reality, it was overrated.
