It was a fad that faded out when h3 came out. Sure, people think it's revolutionary because it's the first game they played, but that's because of nolagista goggles.
Anyone know if it's possible to make a Master Server for Halo 2? I don't know much about console online gaming's software, but, I know that after Starsiege Tribes lost its Master Server the fans were so dedicated that they made their own Master Server. I think it would be cool if Halo 2 fans did the same.
The difference between most PC games and the Xbox is:
1. The xbox is locked down more, Everything is signed, so you would need a softmod or a private key to use it.
2. Xlive is pretty secure. No one has been able to hack it. A while ago, someone planned on creating a Phantasy Star Online server for the xbox. Due to the complexity, and that a softmod was required, they gave up, as they already had Gamecube, Dreamcast, and PC private servers.
That's also why all the modders used XBC + Kai instead.
3. If someone were to make it, it would be hard. Since no one really reverse engineered live due to it's complexity, they would have to make a hacked up halo 2 client. Not only would that take a lot of work, but you would need a softmod to run it, and due to it's reliance on the XDK, it would be illegal. Since no modder cares about h2 anymore, it won't happen.
tl;dr, with heavy hacking, softmods, and people who DO care (and don't just scream "I <3 H2" then sit back and beg), it might happen. The chances are very low however, as there is still not a PSO xbox private server (and that shut down in 2008)
Also, xbox is dead. No one cares about it anymore, so knock the chances down by 30 notches, as all the people who would help you write one moved on to the 360.
