Subject: Lets make a list of Reach's story and canon inconsistancies.

About me: I am a vicious wolf of a man.

But really am sweet at heart. =)

I've been hearing bits and pieces all around about Reach's story breaking canon, well, because I have nothing better to do I decided to create my own thread about it and break it down into catagories.

Winter Contingency:
1. How were all air and ground communications taken offline because one comm relay got shut down?
2. Why was a hugely important relay station that controls all Army, Navy, Special Forces, and Marine frequencies located in a remote mountain range with NO guards or automated defenses?
3. Why didn't the Covenant eliminate all survivors so they couldn't tell Noble where they were?
4. Why didn't the Covenant just ambush the two Falcons with their huge army or dropships while they were coming in?
5. If the Covenant landed in the Viery terrory...which is a dessert....how did they make it into the mountains at least a few hundred miles away? Does NOBODY look up on Reach?

ONI:SWORD BASE
1. If Sword Base was already breached on the inside, why did Noble Team spend an hour taking out all enemies on the exterior?
2. What was the point of those two Longswords flying next to the Corvette?
3. Why didn't the Super MAC gun round level everything within a hundred mile radius?
4. This was before the Supercarrier became uncloaked....why didn't one of a few hundred UNSC ships just fire it's MAC gun instead?

NIGHTFALL
1. Nothing really to note, but if the sector was dark to electronics....how was Kat in touch with them the whole time?

TIP OF THE SPEAR:
1. Why was the main push of the UNSC like a dozen Warthogs, 4 tanks, and a mongoose?
2. Why would they not just MAC gun the crap out of the place? Every human has to be dead by now.
3...Why in Stosh's name did nobody do a simple thermal scan to determine the huge Supercarrier hovering 30 feet in the air?
4. If Frigates are rated for atmosphere why didn't a frigate shoot the corvette out of the air at Sword Base?

LONG NIGHT OF SOLACE:
1.Why did they need to use a UNSC slipspace drive? Why not just throw a grenade in the corvette's engine core? It's worked for the Chief on everything from a Wraith to a Scarab? Or why not use a timed C-12 charge?
2.Boy, those Sabres sure would have been nice when that Corvette was threatening a hugely valuable ONI Base...
3.Why didn't George press the button then jump?
4. Why didn't he tell one of the Marines with him to detonate it?
SIDENOTE: Jorge's Gun
Seriously, lets think about this for a minute, he doesn't take it into the Sabre cockpit with him, he doesn't have it with when he space walks to the Pelican....and he has one on the Corvette again....HOW? Does he have a spare HMG on EVERY ship in the UNSC? It's not another one either, it has the same yellow paint and everything!

Exodus: I can't actually complain about this mission really.

New Alexandria:
1. Why not Super MAC the cruisers glassing the city?
2. Why not just demolish the buildings with the jammers inside?
3.How did none of Noble know the symtoms of a glassing?
4. Why is nobody wearing their helmets when they are in a hugely exposed position in front of an open window?
5. How did a needle round go through Kat's helmet?

The Package:
1. The Covenant have hugely advanced digging tech, which burrowed through thousands of feet of rock at CASTLE base...why wouldn't they use it here?
2. Why did the Covenant suddenly care about it again when Noble showed up?
3. Cortana...split herself? That was only possible AFTER she found the Covie AI in First Strike.
4. Jun flies Halsey to CASTLE Base...where she has been in FoR for weeks...

THE PILLAR OF AUTUMN:
1. Why are there BULLET holes in the Pelican's windshield when they are being shot with plasma?
2. How is Carter, who is sitting behind an armored seat, injured in the CHEST, from plasma from behind, but Emile and 6, sitting in the BACK are fine?
3. Why does Carter have a nosebleed from hitting the windshield? His helmet is made of TITANIUM!
4. Pillar of Autumn...on Reach...wut?
5. If Cortana knows all there is about the Forerunners...why does she have no idea what Halo is?
6. Why does Keyes have Marine Captain's bars on? It isn't the UNSC's official captain's rank, or even the symbol of the multiplayer ranking system's captain rank.

I could go on, but now it is YOUR turn to expose the cheesy, plot hole filled crap, that is Reach's story!

Supreme Dictator, Industrial Polluter, Megalomaniac, Corrupt Politician, Underhanded Reprobate, Rainforest Ravager, Puppy Kicker, Oil Spill Coordinator, Holiday Hater, and an Insurance Salesman.

Yeah, this is definitely the worst written and plotted game ever... right. >___>

4. Pillar of Autumn...on Reach...wut?

Well it was established in Halo: CE that the Pillar of Autumn had just left Reach before arriving at Halo.

Another thing - On GoO it says that Ash has his helmet off, which Kurt calls "A major breach in protocol" so wouldn't Carter know better, especially in his position?

perhaps his helmet was damaged while on the way to the PoA.

Winter Contigency
1. Wasn't it just communications offline for that area only?
2. It couldn't been that hugely important if Noble team was being told right from the get-go that their usage to check on a possible rebel sabotage was overkill.
3. Looked like the Covenant (which might be important to note was only a relatively small infiltration group) were still searching for something, and not concerned with covering up their tracks.
4. They weren't warring yet. I believe you (and I) were trying to make this point in #3.
5. Beats me, but that's because (possibly) that I don't know anything about it. When did it say where they made their first landing? And that they only landed in one spot? If you're talking about the location that the supercarrier was at, I'm sure Phantoms are quite capable of flight and transportation.

Nightfall
1. This would require extensive techno-babble of which I'm incapable. Maybe someone else could field this for ya.

Tip of the Spear
1. Would you send you're entire force going down one line? Or at the same exact time? In any case, I believe there were larger battles playing in the outskirts of the majority of the level.
2. Anti-air guns were preventing proximity of something like that. Sounds sketchy. On the other hand, I imagine the most powerful ships (that probably also had the longer range for MAC round accuracy) were busy in orbit. Leave the space combat for the spaceships, and the ground combat for the infantry? I suppose that opens up more questions, but it's taking me forever just to answer this much. Don't kill me now.
3. The whole electro-magnetic-shield-mabob would undoubtedly mess with scanners. Probably.
4. Dunno. Anti-air placements? If ours can take down a Corvette, I imagine there's can do more than the equivalent.

Long Night of Solace
1. I almost agreed with ya. But keep in mind the Corvette that they boarded wasn't their main target. A slipspace eruption would instantly take out the supercarrier, while an explosion from the Corvette may be partially if not completely absorbed by the supercarrier's shields.
2. Wasn't the sabre base under attack? And it's a planetwide assault; one doesn't throw down all his cards for one position. ONI may be important, but planet Reach has dibs.
3. Large radius. Kinda the idea. Who knows? Maybe he did anyway. Or maybe he gave up after believing "mommy" "died."
4. Doesn't seem very Jorge-y. Maybe his gun was on the pelican? Maybe he placed the gun at his feet in the sabre cockpit, and space-jumped back for it after fitting the pelican? Possibilities are possibly there. But still, it's an interesting point.

New Alexandria
1. Super MAC cannons were designed to fire into space, not to fire pinpoint at the ground and not destroy everything around it. That, and I'm sure they were busy with the hundreds of Covenant ships that just appeared around the planet to focus on one city.
2. Gotta use what you got. Also, some of those buildings still had people in it. And while sacrificies are necessary, spartans seem like they can enter a building and shut down a jammer quicker than going "pew-pew" with a falcon.
3. Hmm. I'm guessing this in regards to the Covenant bombarding other areas miles away? Good point. Perhaps Noble believed they had enough time to accomplish their mission. Which they did.
4. ..in front of an open window thousands of feet above ground and thousands of feet away from other buildings. Not much room for a surprise threat that you don't see coming. I say this, knowing that they were surprised by a threat they couldn't see coming.
5. Radiation lowers shields. There was a lot of radiation.

The Package
1. Wasn't as well protected, and the digging tech still took a while.
2. Did the Covenant ever leave, or more accurately, want to leave? With diminishing UNSC troops and a bountiful amount of Covenant reinforcements, it makes sense the Covenant would take the building back.
3. I got no answer for this. Wouldn't it be depressing if I could refute all of your complaints, though?
4. Eh. I considered that to be an acceptable bend in canon, not a major inconsistency. But, opinion is just an opinion. (Assuming that your complaint derives from date contradictions from book and game and that Halsey stated that she was at the base for weeks beforehand..)

Pillar of Autumn
1. Bungie made plasma weapons. I have no idea what holes it makes in a shield. I like this complaint, and I want to look into it, though.
2. Don't remember the cutscene well enough, so good on ya.
3. Impact/momentum/physics. It's late, I don't wanna explain longer than I have to.
4. Eh. It's a point. You're probably right.
5. Never said that anywhere.
6. Interesting. I'll have to look into this, too.

Cave Johnson here, we're done!

PS: If you are reading this comment while imagining my voice, don't panic. That's just a side effect of the testing.

Winter Contingency:
1. Relay controls the area, noble team lost connection as soon as they went into the dark zone, which is caused by a downed relay station.
2. Not really a purely military station, used for Civilians as well. It may have been placed to accommodate for the large farm area.
3. Hiding possibly. That and leaving them there can allow them to take hostages or use them as traps *Hint* *Hint*.
4. Because if a spartan team failed than an army investigation could happen, which would hamper data retrieval which was the goal of the zealots.
5. Not if they strike the relay first and take out the communication relay and disable any rebellion from the farmers. Again, small farming community, not a lot of people around. If it was a bustling city people would notice.

ONI:SWORD BASE
1. Enabling the communication and AA gun made it so it would be harder for covenant troops to be dropped in.
2. Tracking for the MAC station, like laser painting in current day weaponry.
3. Who says it was a super mac round? You do know they can fire at lower velocities right? Just enough to penetrate the shields.
4. Light frigates are prepared for in atmosphere travel. They are not much of a fight against corvette's (LNoS).

NIGHTFALL
1. Time passed, relay station came back online with repairs.

TIP OF THE SPEAR:
1. Not the main push, this was one of the many pushes. Particularly one to take out AA guns.
2. Wouldn't be enough to get the job done.
3. Wasn't thirty feet in the air. That ship is 20 to 30 Km in length, that thing was in upper atmosphere.
4. Shields, the light frigates mac rounds are not enough to take out a corvette on it's own.

LONG NIGHT OF SOLACE:
1. The thing is huge, you try making it through thousands of covenant forces while traveling double digit kilometers with only two spartans.
2. Possibly not rated for in atmosphere travel, not all ships are aero-dynamic. Especially space ships.
3. Not enough time for him to travel far enough towards the planet before the jump. Him + unshielded/unhulled slipspace = dead. That and it had to be manual, which means when activated it goes into slip space.
4. They were dead, just you and him.
SIDENOTE: No comment.

New Alexandria:
1. Main battle practically over, Super Mac stations are down, or at least their power sources are.
2. With what? The large supplies of the things you don't have?
3. Glassing isn't an experience shared by many, it may have been the first time for Noble team.
4. Kat does it to get a better view on what she is working on, Jun is looking through binoculars with Higher magnification than his helmet, Carter is taking a break.
5. No shields + Headshot = death.

The Package:
1. Digging tech would be impractical against ice, would be like using a chainsaw against butter. Plus they wouldn't want to damage the forerunner tech below them. Castle base had a mountain over it, which allows them to actually use glassing beams to burn away the mountain.
2. They were already in the process of trying to get in, we got around there just at the right time.
3. Read Halsey's Journal, specified there about a theory she has of splitting AI's into seperate entities, and then merging them back together. Which she also does in that same journal.
4. No comment, I'm unsure of the times for the moment.

THE PILLAR OF AUTUMN:
1. The weapon they are using uses the term plasma but it is not. What they appear to use is a highly volatile plasma that still keeps is semi solid state. Which would crack glass just as much as a bullet. That and heat can crack glass, that plus high velocity could put bullet like holes in the glass.
2. They were being chased, which meant at one point they were discovered, what position the covenant where in when they were found is not known. So it might be safe to say while flying towards the POA covenant where ahead of them, they fired, turned around, and continued chasing them.
3. Internal bleeding is not limited to certain parts of the body. Brain hemorrhaging could cause bleeding through the nose.
4. When I read the books I didn't really see any part that made any notion that they just battled in the main attack and then traveled into slipspace. In fact in halo 2 it was mentioned that when the covenant began glassing the POA had left.
5. She doesn't know all there is to the forerunners. All the data she retrieved was possibly methods of interfacing with forerunner technology. Which the methods in of itself were probably simple.
6. No comment.

I could go on, but now it is YOUR turn to expose the cheesy, plot hole filled crap, that is Reach's story!

Not many holes. A couple here of there but a hole can often be confused with uncertainty rather than just overlap in time constraints or more often total lack of information. In this case I would go with it as uncertainty and some time overlaps.

  • 01.23.2011 8:52 PM PDT

Winter Contingency:
1. One big relay is more efficient than many small relays.
2. Agreed, there should have been better defenses.
3. They didn't know there were survivors.
4. They didn't have a huge army in that area.
5. It's not that far, and it was almost completely deserted.

ONI:SWORD BASE
1. They need to stop more from coming with the gun, and contact th orbital MAC with the comms relay.
2. "Longswords inbound to make the push." Should be obvious.
3. Low power setting.
4. It would have taken time for a frigate to get there, more time than noble team.

NIGHTFALL
1. IDK

TIP OF THE SPEAR:
1. In the beginning cutscene it shows that the warthogs were only a small portion of the attack, the UNSC was coming from all sides.
2. It is their own planet, they don't want to MAC it like crazy.
3. Highly advanced covenant cloaking is invisible to infrared.
4. See above in sword base.

LONG NIGHT OF SOLACE:
1. For a supercarrier i don't think a nade or anything short of a nuke would cut it, but they were out of nukes.
2. Sabres aren't rated for atmosphere.
3. No timer, it goes off the second he presses the button.
4. Canonically, the marines were dead.
SIDENOTE: Jorge's Gun
IDK

Exodus: I can't actually complain about this mission really.

New Alexandria:
1. Fleet arrived and destroyed their generators.
2. With what?
3. They did, which is why they were running.
4. No building close enough to be in danger.
5. Very quickly.

The Package:
1. Judging by the underground phantoms, they did.
2. They were kicked out earlier and just got back.
3. That was a fragment, not a copy like in first strike.
4. Thats what she wants you to think, she wasn't very honest.

THE PILLAR OF AUTUMN:
1. Could be needle rifle holes from ground troops.
2. Same as above.
3. Internal bleeding.
4. Requires retcon.
5. She doesn't know everything, just that something important was at those coordinates.
6. Bungie goofed.

My brains hurt when I try to read your list of ''inconsistencies''. Some logic behind your reasonings would be pleased. All I see here is about why didn't the UNSC use SMACs against a small group of enemies scouting near the important UNSC bases and populated centers.

This isn't about your topic, I'm speaking of this forum in general, and if you were being sarcastic I did catch it.

I've been hearing bits and pieces all around about Reach's story breaking canon, well, because I have nothing better to do I decided to create my own thread about it and break it down into catagories.

Winter Contingency:
2. Why was a hugely important relay station that controls all Army, Navy, Special Forces, and Marine frequencies located in a remote mountain range with NO guards or automated defenses?
They did, but they were all wiped out
3. Why didn't the Covenant eliminate all survivors so they couldn't tell Noble where they were? The girl hid from the Zealots so they couldn't find her, or they were busy trying to complete their mission than to worry about someone who wasn't a threat
5. If the Covenant landed in the Viery terrory...which is a dessert....how did they make it into the mountains at least a few hundred miles away? Does NOBODY look up on Reach? They probably set up shop after they had knocked out the communications at Visegrad

ONI:SWORD BASE
1. If Sword Base was already breached on the inside, why did Noble Team spend an hour taking out all enemies on the exterior? So they could have air support to deal with the Corvette
2. What was the point of those two Longswords flying next to the Corvette?Quick laser targeting for the Mac gun?
3. Why didn't the Super MAC gun round level everything within a hundred mile radius?Lost momentum gutting the Corvette, then disintegrated into nothing when it hit the water

TIP OF THE SPEAR:
1. Why was the main push of the UNSC like a dozen Warthogs, 4 tanks, and a mongoose? It was one assault on one Spire. They were countering on every front so their must've been plenty of other assaults going on.
3...Why in Stosh's name did nobody do a simple thermal scan to determine the huge Supercarrier hovering 30 feet in the air?Stealth isn't always hiding from being seen. They could hid their thermal exhaust.

LONG NIGHT OF SOLACE:
1.Why did they need to use a UNSC slipspace drive? Why not just throw a grenade in the corvette's engine core? It's worked for the Chief on everything from a Wraith to a Scarab? Or why not use a timed C-12 charge? I doubt destroying the engine core of the Corvette would destroy the Carrier, they needed to kill that remember?
2.Boy, those Sabres sure would have been nice when that Corvette was threatening a hugely valuable ONI Base...They would've done the same amount of damage as the Longswords
3.Why didn't George press the button then jump?Did you see how big that Slipspace field was? There's no way he would've been able to get out of its range
4. Why didn't he tell one of the Marines with him to detonate it?Spartans don't do that.
He probably had one stashed on the Pelican

New Alexandria:
1. Why not Super MAC the cruisers glassing the city?I'm pretty sure if the Covenant are two steps from taking the planet, the MAC guns are out of commission.
2. Why not just demolish the buildings with the jammers inside?Seems a little unnecessary seeing that a Spartan could do it without leveling the infrastructure.
3.How did none of Noble know the symtoms of a glassing? They did.
4. Why is nobody wearing their helmets when they are in a hugely exposed position in front of an open window? It was their HQ for the time being, they probably felt secure
5. How did a needle round go through Kat's helmet?Either the radiation shorted out her shields, or she forgot to re-boot them when she put her helmet back on.

The Package:
1. The Covenant have hugely advanced digging tech, which burrowed through thousands of feet of rock at CASTLE base...why wouldn't they use it here? Why did when you could just follow the passage down? They probably didn't want to damage the immense Forerunner artifact.
2. Why did the Covenant suddenly care about it again when Noble showed up?They did care about it... just so happens that by the time Noble got their, they were launching an assault to get into the hidden base.
3. Cortana...split herself? That was only possible AFTER she found the Covie AI in First Strike. She didn't copy herself, she just removed one part of her programming to be put back on later
4. Jun flies Halsey to CASTLE Base...where she has been in FoR for weeks... Game canon > Book canon. Take it for what it is.

THE PILLAR OF AUTUMN:
1. Why are there BULLET holes in the Pelican's windshield when they are being shot with plasma?Shoot a plasma rifle at the window shield of a Warthog. It does the same type of damage
2. How is Carter, who is sitting behind an armored seat, injured in the CHEST, from plasma from behind, but Emile and 6, sitting in the BACK are fine?Carter can't move around and dodge plasma from a chair, Emile and Six could.
3. Why does Carter have a nosebleed from hitting the windshield? His helmet is made of TITANIUM!There were plenty of time Chief got hit in the head and blood would come out his mouth
4. Pillar of Autumn...on Reach...wut?Plot device
5. If Cortana knows all there is about the Forerunners...why does she have no idea what Halo is?She doesn't know everything about them, just certain pieces that were left by the Artifact

1. If Sword Base was already breached on the inside, why did Noble Team spend an hour taking out all enemies on the exterior?

A: It wasn't breached on the inside yet.

2. What was the point of those two Longswords flying next to the Corvette?

A: To push it into the SMAC's field of fire.

3. Why didn't the Super MAC gun round level everything within a hundred mile radius?

A: It was fired on extensively low power (Frank O'Connor actually said this one)

4. This was before the Supercarrier became uncloaked....why didn't one of a few hundred UNSC ships just fire it's MAC gun instead?

NIGHTFALL

2. Why would they not just MAC gun the crap out of the place? Every human has to be dead by now.
3...Why in Stosh's name did nobody do a simple thermal scan to determine the huge Supercarrier hovering 30 feet in the air?

3.Why didn't George press the button then jump?

A : Wouldn't have gotten clear in time

4. Why didn't he tell one of the Marines with him to detonate it?

A: They all died in the fighting

New Alexandria:
1. Why not Super MAC the cruisers glassing the city?

A: Didn't want to sacrifice the city. Besides, there's only 20 SMACs

2. Why not just demolish the buildings with the jammers inside?
3.How did none of Noble know the symtoms of a glassing?

A: wat.

4. Why is nobody wearing their helmets when they are in a hugely exposed position in front of an open window?

5. How did a needle round go through Kat's helmet?

A: Shields were down by the EMP from the slipspace rupture.. How does it ever?

The Package:
1. The Covenant have hugely advanced digging tech, which burrowed through thousands of feet of rock at CASTLE base...why wouldn't they use it here?
2. Why did the Covenant suddenly care about it again when Noble showed up?

A: Forerunner artficat...?

3. Cortana...split herself? That was only possible AFTER she found the Covie AI in First Strike.

A: Halsey split her, not Cortana.

4. Jun flies Halsey to CASTLE Base...where she has been in FoR for weeks...

THE PILLAR OF AUTUMN:
1. Why are there BULLET holes in the Pelican's windshield when they are being shot with plasma?

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

Reach overrides TFoR's story. You forget, BUNGIE made the whole damn series, they want to change one part of the storyline, so be it.
