Subject: Microsoft lied to us when they took down halo 2?

WHen microsoft took down halo 2 and other original xbox games from xbox live, they had a few reasons like xbox 360 friends lists are restricted to 100 because of xbox1 games. SO why do I still have a 100 person cap? Why did they lie to us just to save money on the servers. Im crying right now( no not really) but the pc version of halo 2 online is full of modders and cheaters. Why don't they just bring online back for xbox 360 only.

I can buy halo 2 on xbox live marketplace why can't I play it online. Halo 2 had more players online than gears of war all the way to the day it was shut down.

I expect 0 replies from this topic, just reading it will do some good.

50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

This is what I'm going to say to the next "I want h2 back" thread.

If you want h2 so badly, go write your own xbox live server emu. Or play XBC/Kai or the PC port.

Oh, and we did get a new voice codec that doesn't sound like dog crap.

The reason that I heard they took it offline was because they wanted to update several things for xbox live that just weren't compatible with the original xbox stuff.

There was a rumor going around that we were going to be able to double the number of friends we were allowed to have on live, though there was never anything officially announced about it.

We did however get updates to the voice codec's, as well as the updates needed to make kinect work like it should, both for home use and use over live. There was also the update to the dashboard itself, this supposedly made it harder for people to hack/mod their GT's.

In the end we lost a lot, but also gained a lot.

What we gained was not enough to fill the void of what was left when live support for the original xbox games was cut. Far too many good original xbox live games are now forever without live support, and the gamers of today won't be able to play some of the classic games that made xbox live so popular back in the day.

Halo 2 for Life!

When you're a fan of halo 2 and the original Xbox games, the updates were worthless lol and the loss was immense. I know your sugar coating it to make it seem less of a loss by saying we gained alot but "gained" is a relative word. Hundreds of games supported adding depth to a service or new shiny add on's, that to me is weak and sad to even believe they made that decision.

I'm not going to accuse Microsoft of planting stories to provide fabricated reasons to make it more acceptable to remove services for halo 2 (or as I like to call it the game that made the Xbox a successful) by trying to get the Xbox Live community to turn on Halo 2 (and accept it's loss for improvement purposes) un-fairly and than never follow through with their planted ideas but that might of occurred.

hey at least you can play the game on the 360. Think of the poor PS3 people that can't play PS2 or PS games on the PS3.

They can still play them if they have one of the older PS3 models. Besides don't forget about those people who still own games for the sega genesis, snes, n64, etc. Eventually we"ll have to move on once those systems break down for the final time, but its very difficult to move on from the games and game systems we once cherished and loved.

There are too many of those systems, and most are more reliable then newer ones. And the Genesis and SNES have lots of clone systems avaliable cheaply, so when the real hardware gets rare, clones will be avaliable to replace it.

As for the codec, h2v got it too, and all gfwl games. Newer xbox 360 games use it too, like Black Ops, and in party chat, it's used too. And it's much clearer then the old codec. Once you hear it, you won't go back.

The difference between the xbox 1 and gfwl/360, is in the xbox 1, everything was hardcoded into the game. Parts still are on the 360, but they use dashboard calls instead for gfwl/360 live for online. It's why they didn't need to shut down that.

The fact is though that it would have cost Microsoft a lot to keep the original Live servers up and adding all of the games up there would have been no more than 1000 people playing original Xbox games in a day.

Compared with the millions of people playing 360 games, considering we all pay to play on Live. It makes sense to remove the old Live to make room for new features to improve the experience of the massive majority of paying customers.

the pc version of halo 2 online is full of modders and cheaters.
I play Halo 2 Vista all the time and I've only seen a hacker once or twice. With mods, I've only seen one, which, made the game fun. (If you don't know the difference between hacks and mods, just say hacks. There is a major difference) From what I hear, there were tons of hackers on Halo 2. Most out of any of the Halo games on Xbox Live.

Anyways, if you don't like the PC version then use Xbox Connect or Xlink Kai. I have loads of fun on Xbox Connect.

I just wish they would make the map packs available again. My files got corrupted and I can no longer access them.

I like Call of Duty and Gears of War, AND Halo. Why must everyone else like only one or the other?

But are those things that would've been impossible to do while Live support for original xbox games was still going? I've got to agree with the disappointment with how things have gone since support was shutdown almost a year ago. Even the one thing MS cited as being impossible to change while original xbox games were still going over Live (the friends list limit) has yet to be touched. (And I never understood the problem in the first place. Does anyone really have over a hundred people they regularly play or want to play online with?)

The codec would have broken parts of xbox 1 live. They had to update the GFWL dash, as it was unable to recieve 360 messages after the kinect dash.

And it was also the fact that xbl was dead, no one cared, and games were getting harder and harder to find. Elitests don't count, their brainwashed either way.

gears of war has a lot more players than halo 2 did. not only does it have over 10,000 players in ranked every week but it also has probably 10-15,000 who play in player matches every week. halo 2 was dead which was a shame because i still liked to jump on every so often.

edit-also just try playing on vista, xbox connect, or xlink kai.

Do you want your map considered for Halo: Reach matchmaking? Does it support MM gametypes? Send off an email to cartographers@bungie.org or PM me a link and description to your map for submission to the Community Cartographers. I may respond to you for updates to your map, so be sure to be open for communication and critique.

Hi /r/halo on Reddit!

I think it was more to cut the last legal/technical obligation of supporting the original Xbox, as up until the end they still had to spend money training people to support a dead console on the phone lines.

Bringing your tag up to 360 already made most of the original Xbox Live Dashboard unusable due to errors.

By shutting down original Xbox Live, they were able to save money. They could have sandboxed OXbox Live if they really wanted to. But it wasn't worth the investment.

If a video game is the meaning of life to you, then you need to do more then just sit in your basement and play Halo.

Oh, and that private server is fake.
