i would agree that the mutations in forerunner culture usually create a hybrid of the two individuals and with them being from different rates and classes the newly created form would be unstable and the use of non common "brevet" mutation could make things worse.
no doubt it seems common that the newly formed being would normally hold most of the mentors memories and personalities, when they were on the escape pod, Glory had shot down another guards suggestion of trying to stop Born/Didact when his anchilla began controlling the ship, she stated something along the lines of "his imprint comes from the Didact himself, he now has 1,000 years to each of yours" showing that its common for someone to retain not only the memories but to channel their inner skills and personality traits as well.
and as far as the real Didact being dead, it does say so. and the newly formed Born/Didact could be the one to fire the halo array, but this is still book one, only time will tell
