To me Halo 3 is the biggest dissapointment in the series, and yes: I do think it is overrated by this community.
Lets be honest: everything Reach offers should have been in Halo 3 already.
Halo CE set the new bar for shooters and was a generation ahead of the competition.
Then 2004 came...competition was finally on par with Halo CE and Bungie just drops another shooter that was WAY ahead of the competition: Halo 2.
Halo is de shooter that is genre defining and sets bars that other developers can't touch for years.
Then 2007: Halo 3 comes out and suddenly Halo starts feeling stale. No longer the huge progression the first two games had. Halo is no longer miles ahead of the competition but "just" one of the topshooters.
Campaign is lackluster compared to what Halo 2 set up to. Multiplayer is good, but by far not as great as the one in Halo 2. Mapdesign is very weak, starts to show Bungies decline in ability to come up with great maps as in Halo 2.
But somehow...people think Halo 3 is the best Halo in the series. So yes, I think its overrated.
Reach is a different story.
I'd say its greatly underrated by the haters, and the people who defend it very fanatically might intentionally overrate it just to compensate for all the hating.
I personally think Reach is a lot better than Halo 3, but not close to being as epic as the first too tho.
So in short:
Halo 3: overrated, its actually the weakest link in the series
Reach: in dubio, both over and underrated: its just a good Halo
Not really. Halo 3's Campaign had it's own awesomeness. First Shooter game I know that features so much Vehicle A.I.s in a mission, The Covenant. 2 Scarabs + Scorpion + Mongoose + Warthog + Hornets + Banshees + Prowler + Ghost.
God Reach had better capacities to be as epic as that, but somehow somewhere Bungie screwed their hype up.
Reach had the most A.I.s in any Halo game, but just 2 notable parts;
*LNoS. Space Mission. 20+ Banshees, 5 Seraphs, 3 Sabres + Anchor 9 defenses. Talk about vehicular A.I.s being 20 at the max.
*TPoA. The part where Captain Keyes first makes his truimphant voice-over return, or more specifically, the beginning part of the map, Boneyard. 20 Covies, 6 Marines and Emile. 27 A.I.s. That's the highest. Like seriously? I thought Bungie kept hyping the game up that there could be 40 A.I.s.
I mean WTF man, Firefight could take like 28 enemies at the max, 24 from standard Squads (e.g. Elite Patrol, Skirmishers, etc.) and another 4 more from Drop Pod Brutes/Elites/Grunts.
Wow man. Disappointment.
