I wasn't really paying attention, and I only hear bits and pieces of them.

"That thing about always darkest before the dawn? Sometimes you just need to turn on a light." - Preston Marlowe

It's basically (To me) a back story of why Vergil was so important.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

I've been wondering the same thing but haven't gotten around to collecting all the audio files. (Having my disc being "unreadable" doesn't help either.)

It's a parallel story that ties everything together and takes the story from being a bunch of random events with some cool atmosphere to a meaningful and coherent whole. Unfortunately, Bungie didn't lay them out easier to the player, despite the fact that they're completely necessary for the storytelling.

Anyway, here's a transcript of the audio logs, and here's Bungie's neato online interface for viewing the logs themselves.

If you're interesting in why I'm talking about how they wrap stuff up into a nice bundle, this may get you started.

Wow. Just wow. I just read the whole link. I didn't know ODST was so deep. Thanks a lot for providing the link. Everbody should read it.
