I just read a 1up blog about one guys's experience moderating at IGN. It seemed that he loved it at first, but grew to hate gamers, in the end. Here is the short blog:

http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=6158829&publicUserId= 5478589

Do our mods share the same attitude? What about you members?

There was a space in it Steve ;-) - goweb

I'm certifiable.

I guess we'll never know; the thread seems to have been purged from 1up's servers.

-- Steve hasn't had a psychotic break yet, though, if that answers anything.

Hm. That's wierd. It's still on it when I go to it the slow way. Hm. Well, I copied the URL again. Maybe it changes somehow. Here it is:

Here is a non-linkified version(in case copy and paste decides to work):

He's almost had it as bad as some of us first timers... Look at Shishka, months of not having the Ban Hammer made him a very cynical man, it drove me to alcohol and even drove Stosh to become a stripper...

Fact is, appreciate your Moderators.

I have a feeling that it might've just been that fact that it is the IGn boards he's talking about....

  • 12.08.2005 8:49 PM PDT

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

Well while I obviously don't speak for the mods, I don't think they feel that way for several reasons. One: B.Net is free, IGN is not. Two: The B.Net community is better and more mature than IGN. While it is hard to believe at times, I think that B.Net is easily one of the best gaming forums around. Thank you Moderators and Achronos for making it that way.

That makes no sense. IGN is paid for, but is worse?

I don't know, the guy said that you had to pay for some boards, I guess it was all the other boards that were horrible. "(it didn't help that IGN made it so you had to pay to even post on specific boards -- no thanks)" I really don't know though, I've never been to IGN. People could still be arseholes even if they had to pay I guess, they would just be rich arseholes. They could probably still yell and stuff, I doubt IGN would want the mods to perma-ban people and cut off the money that they are getting from the paid users.

You must be kidding. I've always been cynical. I'm (in)famous at HBO for being acerbic.

I've been moderating for what? A year or two now? And I don't hate gamers. Contrary to popular belief, I don't hate the MLG, nor even do I hate people that hate Halo 2. Unlike some people that have come by this site, I don't lose any sleep over what happens here. If I came to the point to where I couldn't deal with or didn't like the community, I'd leave. Seeing as I'm still here, I'd say we're fine.

Why would a mod be a mod on a community they don't like? I stopped reading at fanboy. Evil word. Worse than noob. The best behaved forums I've ever seen are ham radio forums. That is probably because there is no anonymity when you go by callsigns, and because they are small groups. Plus most amateur radio operators are 40 and older.

Well, I read it and it seems he just grew to hate fanboys and loudmouth forum idiots - people who really do deserve the hate.

Finally got to read the article.

It looks to me that he liked the community at the start, but just got peeved at it the more he had to wrestle with its more difficult members. (Instead of taking the sweet, sweet option of just ignoring them that you can afford to take as a non-moderator.) I think it got personal after a while, and that's a dangerous condition... an easy one to slip into, but dangerous none-the-less.

As to the ham radio groups being well-behaved, well, they do have all of that communications discipline training under their belts already...

-- Steve thinks that a radio's "simplex" communication scheme does force its members to be polite if they're going to be able to use it at all. Plus that FCC/CRTC "giant cudgel of doom" looming over their heads...

Bah, he had it EASY.

I agree with the points at the end.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Why must there be hate? I mean sure, people are annoying. Fact of life. Someone does something that you don't like repeatedly, you become annoyed.

But to hate them? Come on now, be reasonable. Saying that can sometimes bring you down to their level.

No way do our moderators feel like that. And if they do they have their ways to rid the pain.

Yoozel for example he gets drunk then comes here. No offence Yoozel just trying to make a point.

Car accident rates.

But anyways. I was just wondering what you all thought about it. I personally, love Bnet. I've never been to IGN, but if it's anything like bnet, it can't be as bad as he seems to think it is. And Reiginko leaving seemed to go right along with this(this was like a week ago, Reiginko let like two weeks ago). I don't think Reig started to hate the community, but he did admit to getting bored by it. Which is what I'm guessing was how this guy started on his path to hating gamers.

Yes why does there have to be hate. If you do not agree then just ignore it. Do not be an idiot and flame. Those kind of people do deserve to be disliked but to hate them, come on.

I think that he just got fed up with the retards on there and had a mental breakdown. Though I do agree with some of the stuff he said.

There is no way the mods could hate us like that here. And if they did, B.Net would be a very, very, lonely place. Thankfully, we have mods that care... I think...
