150,000 B.C.E.
Humanity is believed by the Forerunners to have "moved their interstellar civilization outward along the galactic arm"
110,000 B.C.E.
Human colonists discover vessels containing fine organic powder on both inhabited and deserted worlds. This powder is administered to the domesticated Pheru, which begin to exhibit more docile behavior; unbeknownst to humanity and their San 'Shyuum allies, the powder begins to alter the Pheru's genetic makeup. Centuries later, the Pheru begin to show outward signs of mutation and cannibalize one another. Soon, both humans and San 'Shyuum who are exposed to the powder begin to exhibit the same symptoms.
The Flood then begins to take over hundreds of worlds, turning its victims into misshapen forms. Humanity begins all-out war against the Flood. Eventually, humanity discovers a cure for the Flood and contains the infection while it is still relatively minor, removing all traces of its existence within the Milky Way Galaxy. Throughout the war, most Forerunners remain unaware of the Flood's existence, believing stories of the parasite to be an excuse for humanity's aggressive expansion. The Flood are not seen again for ten millenia.
During their war against the Flood, humanity desparately invades a minor sector of Forerunner space, sparking the Human-Forerunner War. Stretched thin due to fighting two wars simultaneously, humanity loses the war and the Forerunners eliminate all traces of humanity's former interstellar civilization. The human survivors are exiled to their homeworld, Erde-Tyrene. Over the course of the next millennia, humanity regresses into a pre-industrial state and eventually devolves into several species, including the Hamanush, the Chamanush, the B'ashamanush, and the K'tamanush.
109,000 B.C.E.
The Librarian establishes a research station on Earth and moves the surviving humans from the Human-Forerunner Wars there. Humanity soon regresses into a pre-industrial state.

100,300 B.C.E.
First contact is made between a Forerunner research team and the Flood on G617 g1. A military team was sent in later after contact had been lost. The Flood escaped the planet, thus beginning the 3-century-long Forerunner-Flood War.
100,043 B.C.E.
The Forerunners sent 032 Mendicant Bias to combat the Flood threat and Gravemind.[1] Mendicant Bias would eventually turn against his makers and fight for the Gravemind.
At the same time the Librarian returns to Earth to index the human species. The entire species is removed from the surface of the planet and held on the Ark.
100,000 B.C.E.
The approximate time when The Forerunners fired the Halos[1], or what the Covenant refer to as The Great Journey. 343 Guilty Spark put the date as the year 97,448 B.C.E, though it should be noted that he measured it on Installation 04's year, not the 365.25 day Earth calendar.
The activation was supposed to end the Forerunner-Flood War. It killed all sentient life within three radii of the galactic center, including any Forerunners not located on The Ark or within Shield Worlds. The date, about 100,000 years ago, is around the time our sapien ancestors began migrating out of Africa.

97,227 B.C.E.
A report is sent to 2401 Penitent Tangent regarding Flood containment failure in one particular facility, urging assistance due to the dangers of a full outbreak. Penitent Tangent ignores this report and protocol despite multiple and more urgent reminders. He continued to ignore this for another 99,779 years, at which point a full outbreak had already occurred, but by then it was too late.

57,448 B.C.E.
A meteor bearing Forerunner symbols crashes on the planet that will be known as Sigma Octanus IV. It will be discovered approximately 60,000 years later.
2200 B.C.E
After centuries of unity the San 'Shyuum become divided into two groups, the Stoics who believe that Forerunner relics were sacred and not to be altered, and the Reformists who wish to more closely examine the artifacts and use them for their own purposes. This fundamental disagreement sparks the San 'Shyuum Civil War.
2100 B.C.E.
The century-long San 'Shyuum Civil War comes to an end as one thousand Reformists enter the Forerunner Dreadnought and flee the San 'Shyuum homeworld.
938 B.C.E.
The San 'Shyuum first encounter the Sangheili on Sanghelios who, like the Stoics, believe that Forerunner relics are to be worshipped, not modified.[1] This ideological difference results in the Sangheili-San 'Shyuum War, in which the Sangheili have a distinct advantage in infantry combat due to superior numbers and troop quality. However, in space combat the San 'Shyuum have a great advantage because of their Dreadnought.
876 B.C.E.
After decades of struggle between the Sangheili and San 'Shyuum in the Sangheili-San 'Shyuum War, the Sangheili finally accept that they must adapt and study their Forerunner relics or face defeat at the hands of the San 'Shyuum. The Sangheili warrior priests reluctantly begin using their relics to improve their warships, arms and armor.
852 B.C.E.
The Sangheili and San 'Shyuum end their war, merging to form the Covenant. The Council of Concordance ratifies the Writ of Union, clearly defining the roles of the San 'Shyuum and the Sangheili.
784 B.C.E.
During one of the first Ages of Conversion Covenant forces discover the planet Te and with it the Lekgolo. They discover that many of the Lekgolo worm colonies have literally devoured Forerunner artifacts and installations, while others eat everything except Forerunner installations. The Lekgolo initially prove difficult to defeat because of their ability to combine into the powerful Mgalekgolo, however due in part to their superior spaceship technology the Covenant are able to ally with and tame the useful Lekgolo, and exterminate the relic-destroying colonies in what will come to be known as the Taming of the Hunters. The compliant Lekgolo are incorporated into the Writ of Union in 784 B.C.E.
648 B.C. E.
The San 'Shyuum homeworld of Janjur Qom is destroyed by a natural stellar collapse and the Forerunner Dreadnought is made into the centerpiece of the new space station that will serve as the Covenant's capital, High Charity..
The San 'Shyuum homeworld of Janjur Qom is destroyed by a natural stellar collapse and the Forerunner Dreadnought is made into the centerpiece of the new space station that will serve as the Covenant's capital, High Charity. It is unknown whether or not the descendants of the Reformer San 'Shyuum had ever physically returned to their homeworld after they left it in 2100 B.C.E. during their schism with the Stoic San 'Shyuum.
480 B.C.E.
In The Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC, an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian Empire at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the massive army of Persians for three days in one of history's most famous last stands. A small force led by King Leonidas of Sparta blocked the only road through which the massive army of Xerxes I could pass. After three days of battle, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing a mountain path that led behind the Greek lines. Dismissing the rest of the army, King Leonidas stayed behind with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespian volunteers. The Persians succeeded in taking the pass but sustained heavy losses, extremely disproportionate to those of the Greeks.
The fierce resistance of the Spartan-led army offered Athens invaluable time to prepare for a decisive naval battle that would determine the outcome of the war. The subsequent Greek victory at the Battle of Salamis left much of the Persian navy destroyed and Xerxes I was forced to retreat back to Asia, leaving his army in Greece under Mardonius, who met the Greeks in battle one last time. The Spartans assembled at full strength and led a pan-Greek army that defeated the Persians decisively at the Battle of Plataea, ending the Greco-Persian War and with it the expansion of the Persian Empire into Europe. This war was shown by Deja on the first day of Spartan training.
1112
The Yanme'e; a tier 4 civilization, are incorporated into the Covenant as a slave race.
1342[b]
In 1342 the Covenant discover the Kig-Yar. Although the Kig-Yar initially attempt to resist absorbtion into the alliance they quickly recognize that they are facing a superior force and submit, taking on the role of explorers and traders (and often thieves and smugglers). The Kig-Yar are also motivated by the potential trade and wealth the Covenant can provide.
[b]1552

In 1552, the San 'Shyuum began developing technologies that could increase their life spans
1775
In 1775, the formation of the United States of America was declared. Also, the Continental Marines, a predecessor to the United States Marine Corps, the UN Marine Corps and the UNSC Marine Corps, were established by the Continental Congress to fight the British. There were two battalions of Continental Marines. However, only one was ever established. They were disbanded in 1783, after the rebels won their independence from Britain.

1945
The first Human-made nuclear weapons are used against an enemy, when the United States drops two atomic bombs on the Empire of Japan.
The end of World War II, which was the bloodiest and most expensive war in Human history up to that point.
The United Nations is formed on Earth at the end of World War II. The UN eventually forms the UNSC in the 2100s, but the UN begins embarking on military and security operations as early as the 1950s. Fifty-one nations originally signed the UN Charter, which governed the "global association of governments facilitating co-operation in international law, international security, economic development, and social equity." By the beginning of the 21st century, practically all the nation-states on Earth are members of the United Nations.
1995
David George and Aaron Elliot founded the "Society of the Ancients".
2080
Humans settle on Luna, Mars, the Jovian Moons, and asteroids
2142
In early 2142 the Covenant discover the Unggoy homeworld, Balaho. The Unggoy surrender almost immediately in the imposing presence of the Sangheili and are incorporated into the Covenant.
2160
Jovian secessionist attacks on United Nations Colonial Advisers on the moon Io led to three months of fighting between the Earth military and Jovian "Frieden" forces. Though this was not the first armed conflict in the Sol System, it was easily one of the bloodiest, and is generally considered to be the spark of increased friction and militarization that followed. The Jovian Moons Campaign escalated tensions, as Earth's national governments, many of which sponsored colonies within the system, began fighting proxy wars off-planet. As these continued, tensions on Earth mounted, leading to a number of armed conflicts on Earth itself.
2163
The United Nations Space Command is established to eliminate the various Rebel organizations in the Sol System.
2164
The first UNSC military bioengineering protocols are created, which would later form the basis of the ORION Project.
2215
Wallace Fujikawa is born. He will later become the co-creator of the Shaw-Fujikawa Slipspace Drive.
2220
Tobias Fleming Shaw is born - the co-creator of the Shaw-Fujikawa Slipspace Drive.
2291
In April, 2291, a group of researchers headed by Tobias Shaw and Wallace Fujikawasecretly developed the Shaw-Fujikawa Slipspace Drive, a practical means of propelling spacecraft across vast interstellar distances. This new engine allowed ships to tunnel into "the Slipstream" (also called "Slipspace"). Slipspace is a domain with alternate physical laws, allowing faster-than-light travel without relativistic side effects. Faster-than-light travel is not instantaneous; "short" jumps routinely take up to two months, and "long" jumps can last six months or more. The SFTE generated a resonance field, which when coupled with the unusual physics of the Slipstream, allowed for dramatically shorter transit times between stars; however, scientists noted an odd "flexibility" to temporal flow while inside the Slipstream. Though no human scientist is sure why travel time between stars is not constant, many theorize that there are "eddies" or "currents" within the Slipstream. There is generally a five to ten percent variance in travel times between stars. This temporal inconsistency has given military tacticians and strategists fits-hampering many coordinated attacks.
2310
The Earth government unveils the first in a line of colony ships; given conditions on Earth are deteriorating in the face of overpopulation, hitching a ride out to a colony becomes a highly attractive option. Additionally, the Earth government plans to attach military personnel to each colony, to help better utilize the massive (and expensive) standing fleets. Because FTL travel is still fairly new and expensive, colonists and military personnel face a stringent regimen of physical and mental testing. In theory, only the best-qualified citizens and soldiers are allowed to colonize "nearby" worlds. This is the birth of the Inner Colonies; typically, the Inner Colonials are considered the most elite, best, and brightest.
2317
Tobias Fleming Shaw, the co-creator of the Shaw-Fujikawa Slipspace Drive, dies at age ninety-seven.
2318
Wallace Fujikawa (the co-creator of the Shaw-Fujikawa Slipspace Drive) dies at the age of one hundred-two.
2321
The ORION Project is first initiated. Poor results determine the Office of Naval Intelligence to temporarily put the project on hold. The Project is re-initiated in 2491.
2381
In 2381, the Assembly Majority makes a suggestion to the Committee of Minds for Security that the Assembly should relay their ideas to humanity indirectly, due to the risk of humans ignoring them if they presented them outright
2390
The colonization of the Inner Colonies is fully underway. There are 210 Human-occupied worlds in various stages of terraforming, and the population burden across human-controlled space is largely stabilized.
2412
The M6A Handgun is first produced.
2415
In 2415, 48452-556-EPN644, a member of the Assembly, suggests that each of the AIs should occasionally offer themselves to be vivisected by the humans to lower any suspicions the humans might have towards their activities.
2437
The MA37 Individual Combat Weapon System enters service in the UNSC.
2460
The SRS99 enters service in the UNSC Army.
2462
The Unggoy Rebellion occurs. After much conflict in the Covenant, an Arbiter is sent in to end the rebellion.[1] Its conclusion marks the beginning of the 23rd Age of Doubt and the ascension of the High Prophets of Tolerance and Restraint and the High Prophetess of Obligation.
2468
The planet of Harvest is established as the 17th Human colony, the UNSC Skinblandir transporting the first colonists. The ship, under the guidance of the AI Loki, remains in the system to keep an eye on the establishment of infrastructure.
2470
Admiral Preston Cole is born on Earth.
2490
Human space encompasses more than 800 worlds throughout the Orion Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy (ranging from fairly well-tamed planetary strongholds to tiny hinterland settlements). Outward expansion continued, and the Inner Colonies become a political and economic stronghold, though they rely heavily on raw materials supplied by the Outer Colonies. During this period, the planet Reach (orbiting Epsilon Eridani, right on Earth's metaphorical doorstep) becomes the UNSC's primary Naval yard and training academy. Reach is a major producer of warships and colony vessels, as well as a training ground for covert operatives and Special Forces.
2491
48452-556-EPN644, a member of the Assembly, submits himself for vivisection by the humans, with the intent of sparking an interest in the long-dormant Orion Project. As a result, the program is re-initiated.
2492
Catherine Elizabeth Halsey is born.
2502
Operation: KALEIDOSCOPE takes place on Harvest. The operation involved the assassination of Jerald Mulkey Ander, the leader of the Secessionist Union by Avery Junior Johnson.
2506
Project ORION, the original SPARTAN project - the first attempt by the Colonial Military Administration to create and train teams of super-soldiers for covert military operations in the Outer Colonies - is deactivated. Though the Spartans are effective, their abilities fall short of original expectations, and they are far too expensive to develop and field. The soldiers in the program are reassigned to various special operations units.
2507
Doctoral candidate Catherine Halsey meets Dr. Elias Carver at an academic social mixer. Halsey attempts to correct his formula for "the matrix mechanics of the socio-and politico-economic vectors of human expansion" for which he had used only 7 dimensional parameters in his calculations; Halsey claims he needed 16. Carver does not appreciate being challenged by a young upstart.

Humanity used a total of 1/3 their population to make a fire break so that once the flood absorbed them, they'd acquire "a destructive set of programmed genes" so the flood would kill themselves by their own compulsion to consume and subsume.

I think Halopedia messed up on the whole Marines thing. The first formal Marines Corps in the world was the Spanish "Infantería de Marina" (Naval Infantry for those who don't take Spanish). It was established in 1537 by the king of Spain at that time, Charles I (also known as Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire).

The Oldest formal Marine Corps by Country:
1. Spain - 1537
2. Portugal - 1621
3. France - 1622
4. United Kingdom - 1664
5. Netherlands - 1665
6. Italy - 1713
7. United States 1755

Even before Spain, Triremes used by the various Greek City-States and later on Galley's used by naval powers such as Rome and Carthage had contingents of soldiers on board used to either excute or repel boarding actions. Though these were recognized simply as army units deployed at sea, not distinct naval infantry like the Infantería de Marina.

But I digress, I'm being nit-picky.

Overall the timeline from Halopedia seems to be pretty accurate. But maybe some people who are better versed in the Halo cannon will find some errors to improve the timeline. I don't know about ya'll but the timeline is especially helps visual people like me make sense of how the games and books all fit in together.

Thanks for posting this :)

What the timeline seems to say is that the Continental Marines were the direct ancestors of the USMC, UN Marine Corps, and UNSC Marine Corps. The other Marine type organizations existed, but they are not in the direct line.

The Continental Marines are the predecessor of the USMC. This much is historical fact. The UNSC seems to be very United States based, so if the UNSC came from the United States, then it is possible, if not probable, that the USMC evolved into the two other organizations.

And the covenant were WRONG, which is why you kill them in halo games. I wasn't speaking from the covenants perspective, I was speaking from the TRUE perspective.

And yes they did. Go back and read the terminal transcripts. Didact mentions how they will go on the great journey after he fires the halos.

God some people are stupid.

The Didact states that the Forerunners will begin the Great Journey and will "follow in Their footsteps". "Their" being the Precursors.

After the Flood lay dormant, they departed from the galaxy to pursue this.

When he refers to "the Great Journey" he could just be referring to death and nothing else. Many societies and cultures use euphemisms to talk about death (i.e. pass on, go to a better place, etc.) The Covenant could have taken this euphemism literally and thought they actually went somewhere, like when they mistranslated Reclamation for Reclaimer.
