Subject: A Lack Of Moderators Means A return To The Underground Is In Order

bah

There were three topics today in The Underground that got close to flame wars, one of them got pretty hot for a few minutes. It was sucessfully squelched just in the nick of time. I really couldn't figure out who I should contact, I hadn't a clue as to which mod was on at the time. I really think it's high time for everyone to return to The Underground, because if you wait, it'll only get worse as the new people get to know each other before they get to know the older members. This would be bad because we need to brainwash them to our way of doing things; clean and relevant. Someone posted a real winning thread, complete with gteat speculation, and they got flamed almost immediately. Since we only have 3 mods, and Bungie employees are too busy too often, the mature members need to return and force a change instead of waiting for it to come about on its own.

Well Stosh mentioned to me that Sketch will probably be picking up a few more mods after FanFest and that is also when he said he’d have the Mod’s Guide to the Galaxy! (Not quite the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, but equally nifty!)

But now really, they can’t be on at all times, they try their best, but it’s like they are trying to fight the ocean with only one sandbag. It’s either really crazy or impossible; our mods are doing a fine job in my opinion! They usually get on top of the ‘bad’ post within hours if not minutes, and that’s pretty damn good!

Still, a few more mods might work out nicely. because unfortenatley i sometimes see that the mods are there just a bit too late.

That is true also I have seen things stay on the boards for awhile, but you've gotta give them credit for trying, right?

If you guys see flaming lamers please alert either shishka or myself. It doesn't matter if we aren't online at the time. I'm on bungie.net a good part of my day now...I'll probably respond to any alert within 2 hours.

I appreciate what you're trying to do, but you aren't a forum moderator. Flamers won't listen to you. You could possibly make things worse.

We will get a few more forum moderators soon.

Personally I think rip Saw should be a mod, just incase sketch sees this. I mean your on a lot, mainly the forums, and you see a lot of things bad happening, so you would be perfect in my opinion.

Yo Halo53, I'm real happy for you and I'ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best bungie.net profiles of all time. OF ALL TIME!

The only forum I have ever been a regular at is the septagon. I do agree that so much has happened in terms of spam. There is currently a topic which is made to advertise for another forum. If I wanted advertisements I would open up my junk folder and pray that Bud Selig gets Spiderman 2 logo's on the bases, but I don't. I am not blaming the quality of mods we have, I am blaming the quantity. I rarely have and rarely will ever visit anything else besides the septagon. Of course Halo 2 may change that but I am not really sure what is happening in the underground but if the problem is similar to that of the septgon (Same members so I assume so) than more mods should be made. Now I know sketch is on it and will make more so I am not complaining, just saying the more mods the merrier, or something.

Everytime you post spam in the septagon you make baby Jesus cry. <---New signature for me ;)

All the spam gets dealt with in the septagon though..right? Or do I have like selective vision or something? I'm starting to think I do, because I don't really see a whole a lot of problems with the forums as they are now. Even with a hundred mods we will never be able to lock nasty topics before they're posted.

Also we can't really lock some of the stupid topics, because that goes against the "welcome to the new user" policy we have here. I believe what we need more than anything else is a couple new forums. That way new users will tend to gravitate to the most popular forum -- the underground -- while the older more bungie informed folk will discuss what they will in the various other forums.

I cannot really punish the average joe when he makes a topic that has already been discussed heavily either. We don't have a search function, so there's really no way a user could possibly know if a topic has been posted before or not.

I'm not saying we don't need a couple new mods, we do...I'm just explaining a few reasons why Shishka and I have been somewhat reluctant to lock or delete some topics.

Well, people are going to talk about the same thing over and over, I think it's really up to people to realize that if the same topic has been posted, and does not have any new information, that's it's not worth replying too.

Oh' well...Let's just get a few more mods and stop complaining!

Took keep this board pleasent for everyone, forum users ( regular people as well as Moderators and Administrators ) should possible find a way to help each other in means that don't require posting messengers in anger and other such.

Maybe ask them to calm down, post more senseable, direct them to the correct forums in a polite fashion that will make everyone happier in the long run?

  • 05.08.2004 11:23 PM PDT

bah

I'm not saying we need a ton of mods, what we need is positive peer pressure. It's like when boys are raised without dads, they are more likely to be bad children. The new people could pretty much reset the Underground, leaving the old members in the dust. I'm not saying everyone has to play by our rules, but I sure don't want to play by just theirs.

I'm trying to be a good example, but the problem is just like stosh said, just because you're an old(er) member, doesn't mean people(the flamers and spam slingers in this case) will listen to you. trust me, i know.

No one ever listens to me. Ever. Hey, look at me when I am talking to you. Why aren't you listening?

Well certain forums goers, like "moderators" could post in the topic that they flamed/spammed in and "politely explain what they did wrong and ask them to please stop." I think "it may work"

If my suggestio above doesnt work, reread it and replace the phrases in quotes with the following phrases in asterisks (in order)

*bungie employees*
*Threaten that they won't get a copy of halo 2.*
*Will definitley work*

Either way they stop. But I think the asking politely may be a better idea.

Personally, I think that there should be more mods on the forums. The problem with our current mods, however, is that they're not flagged very well (I know Stosh has "moderator" on his avatar, but I don't know about Shishka). Without the mods being labeled as mods, newer members might not know who they are and not listen to them. Perhaps instead of haveing "Member" under their name, "Moderator" might be a better choice. A list of mods posted in all of the forums might be handy as well, just so people know beforehand who to look out for.

Nice, I think that would help a lot. It would prevent people from saying "You can't tell me what to do because you're not a mod." I can imagine that that could get kind of frustrating.

Well, we need alot of things. Nothing will ever be perfect, it's a fact. So just try to deal with it. But more moderator's is good. But they got to be good moderator's. Like im thinking one's that been here awhile. Espically one's who are nice. Plus we don't want moderator's going bad. So it isn't even easy to pick them. But bungie did a excellent job picking stosh and shiska so just wait for the other moderator's. And if you speak strongly and intellegently, the other "new" guys might listen to you.

I like Halo53's post, made me laugh.

But stosh has mentioned that a few more mods are going to be choosen after E3, and our current mods have done a wonderful job. True, a better flagged moderator would help. Having their own avatars and 'moderator' by, plastared, around their name would help as well. Not everyone takes a look at avatars.

Well its about time somebody laughed. All those jokes I made and most of them are ignored. I was starting to think you guys are all cold hearted and humorless but then I made a joke and only my dad laughed so I must be loosing my touch if I have his sense of humor :(

Anyway back on topic...

Any idea how many mods will be picked?

Both search and new forums are coming "soon", and probably a few new moderators as well as some kind of official moderator guide for them (like what to lock vs. what to delete vs. what to lock and report to bungie).

Why don't we just make about 50 achronos clones instead?
