In Cryptum, the first of a new seires of novels in a Forerunner saga written by Greg Bear it explains in the first chapter that 10,000 years ago, humanity had an intersteller empire and waged war with the Forerunners but were utterly destroyed and as punishment the remaining Humans were devolved and split into several sub-species to slow the chance of them being united again. They were placed on a planet called Erde-Tyrene in the Sol system...otherwise known as earth.
If anyone has read the book and has some amazing info on this ^ or anything else please share it but don't ruin the book completely.
My interpretation is as follows:
[SPOILERS]
The pre-Humans( Before the Human-Forerunner war ) Weren't quite as advanced as the forerunners, but very close. The Pre-humans were "smarter" ( I.E. better problem solvers, probably would have surpassed the forerunners given enough time) The pre-Humans found the flood powder stuff, which evolved into the Flood. The forerunners knew about the Flood as the pre-humans were battling it, but since it was far away and didn't affect them, they didn't worry about it. The pre-Humans we're fighting a losing battle against the flood, losing system after system, until they devised either a cure or found a weakness, and exploited it. As the fight continued, the Pre-humans had all of these people, who fled from the flood, and no-where to put them. I'm guessing that the Pre-humans had asked the Forerunners to make an agreement where the two races could share worlds, but the Forerunners declined. The pre-human's had no choice but to go to war over planets, and, because they were weakened by the flood, as well as behind in technology, they lost. The Forerunners then placed the remaining pre-humans on Earth, and the rest you know.
Again, this is MY INTERPRETATION of the book. None of it is confirmed, so don't take it as fact.
