I read each one as they were released. Fall of Reach is still one of my favorite books of all. When the Flood came out, however, I'll say that I was more than just a little disapointed by it. William C. Dietz, even though he has written 20+ books, just cannot write. I enjoyed the Flood, but it was torture reading some of his poorly constructed sentences.
When I found out that First Strike was by Nylund again, I couldn't have been happier. It was amusing to me, as I read it, what Nylund did to kind of wrap up or explain some of the crap that Dietz put in the Flood. First Strike was just as good as Fall of Reach, in my opinion. There were a lot of inconsistencies and such, but one can look past those.
Not to bash the Flood completely, though, I will say that when I read it a second time through it was a helluva lot better. The story's there, just not the technique.
As for my suggestion, read them all. You can never be a Halo fanatic until you read them all. It is one giant great story and it would suck to not be "in the know."
