Subject: The origin of the Flood is incredibly obvious...

Has life ever felt like a really bad sitcom?

They were a test, made by the precursors in order to see if the forerunners were capable of taking on the mantle. Whether they past that test or not you can decide, but humanity (more specifically the inheritors) definitely did. Who're the inheritors? Any reclaimers that chose to uphold the mantle, such as John-117

Do you know what kind of hat I'm wearing?

A party hat; you don't get one. An honor will this party be, a party in your honor, for your honor. Some of Tfear's personal guards are going to be there. You'll be introduced shortly.

Prepare to die.

Obvious you say?
OT: Good theory, but I don't think it's in the precursors nature to create a parasite that murders and pillages.

Interesting, but off-topic link. And also you have a point, but still we don't know what the precursors were like.

At the end of Cryptum it says that the Forerunners destroyed the Precursors. It is more likely that the Flood was a way for the Precursors to fight back/punish the Forerunners.

Check out Heritage, an awesome 4v4 map that can be found in my file share.

Check out Bedrock. That's cool, too.

I think the flood was a test to see how long it would take before Achronos destroys one of his own forums.

Well let's see... Perhaps they took him to one of their planets in the end of halo 3
Edit: the mantle is a promise to help all living things in the galaxy, John certaintly did.

I think the OP might be right

At the end of soma the painter when the flood arrived at Seaward one of the Forerunners said "our test has arrived".But this can mean many things.

But when did humanity succeeded in that?Unless you refer to the ancient human-flood war, those floods weren't the same as the other flood.

But this might be intresting for Halo 4,but the UNSC isn't built to fight the Flood.

Old School

well if anything, the flood is the exact opposite of the mantle. one side is the preservation of life, the other, destruction.

it would appear that ancient humans upheld the "mantle" by destroyin some of their own to save the rest.

my understandin is taht the forrunners realised this at the end...ergo firing the halos...last resort.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

You got it incredibly wrong.

The last Precursor reveals that they created the Flood to wipe out the Forerunners, being their "answer" to them for destroying them.

Why do you think the other precursors imprisoned him? Because he's a liar!

Er... no. The reason he was imprisoned is never revealed, and why would he lie? There would be no purpose in lying and that's just screwing over the reader.

That was just an assumption I made, the precursors didn't put him in that cage without reason. So why wouldn't he be a manipulator and a liar?

Or he could have been wrongfully put in there like Marcus in GOW, but that's unlikely.

And a lot of books would lose their tension if all characters always spoke the truth.

Edit: sorry, didn't have my facts straight

No, not the Bible.

Read Cryptum, ancient humanity was a civilization almost as powerful as the Forerunners, and long story short, we ended up in a war with the Flood which we won.

True,i used the wrong words.

So i'll say this, the flood who fought the forerunners had the gravemind and bias at their side, they were evolved.

  • 02.02.2011 10:01 AM PDT

Ok, so Cryptum confirms that The Flood is the last "answer" of the precursors. So that makes the The Flood precursor payback for the Forerunners killing them off? I mean, that makes sense, but how exactly could Forerunners kill off Precursors? They were Transentient. Maybe the original gravemind lied? (previously stated) Maybe the Flood was another transentient race (stated in an old, proven incorrect, but very thought out theory) and was the actual fall of the precursors. Or, maybe he was telling the truth and he is the precursor answer to the end of the forerunners. I still just don't get how the forerunners at their state in technology could have beaten the precursors.

  • 02.02.2011 10:02 AM PDT

HOPEFULLY, the other 2 books in the trilogy will answer all these questions. It sucks having to wait for them to come out to get these answers. Or maybe we have to wait for games...that'd take even longer D':

  • 02.02.2011 10:04 AM PDT

Has life ever felt like a really bad sitcom?

I'm not sure if it's frowned apron to change theory, but I didn't have all my facts right when I made the theory so here it goes: what if the precursors used their trans-sentience to become the flood?

  • 02.02.2011 10:07 AM PDT

:P

Nah, what's interesting is that the humans were able to create a cure, while the forerunners could not.
