We know that the UNSC-Insurrectionists war was a big part of the Halo universe, but... What was the cause of rebellion? I'm unable to find the answer in the Halo Encyclopedia.
Was the UNSC a totalitarian government or what? It almost seems that way.

I think tha general thing was that they wanted to rule themselves especially tha Outer Colonies.

Check Halopedia :)

That should help :)

They also seen tha UNSC as facists - frequently mentioned in all of tha Halo novels.

the reason that i haven't ranked up anymore in H3 is simple.
if im general and lose a single game, i will get about 20 messages asking me how much i paid for the 50 on ebay.
if im brigadier, i would get messages saying, cant get a 50, noob?

i want a game set before the human-covenant war were you are marines and fight rebels, maybe something that resembles CoD a little, would be pretty cool.

they could use the ODST health system.

I think its a lot like the founding of america actually, the outer colonies are where the insurrection started. They were just fed up with being ruled by a planet that they had never been to. They thought that earth should had no authority over the outer colonies because they were so far removed.

We don't want your Call of Halo around here. It would destroy the franchise.
I don't want a new Halo every year.

Read the books, you can get your Insurectionist action from a number of them.

We don't need M$ to tip the Halo cow and start milking it for every cent its got like the COD franchise.

Anyway, the people in the outer colonies got fed up with people in the inner colonies tring to tell them what to do, when it was clear that they didn't know how life worked in the outer colonies.
They wanted to be able to rule themselfs, very similar to Australia's independance from the UK, only the UK didn't give it to them and so the Aussies rebelled and fought us for their independance.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

They wanted to be self governed. Each colony had their unique wants and needs and a government located on Earth really dosent care, because it mostly inflicts with Earth's intrests.

People wanted out, but the UNSC did not allow them, so they rebellion was their last option for independence.

The insurrectionists rebelled because they thought the UNSC were repressing them. It seems that they had a fair point, if you look at how Earth was run, the Government knew everything about everyone.

The insurrectionists were only mounting terrorist attacks if you look at the war from the point of view of the UNSC. From the point of view of someone living in the outer colonies they were fighting a war for independence. Everything they did had a legitimate military purpose. They were either gathering supplies or attacking their better equipped foe.

As far as the method of fighting goes, think of them as insurgents in Iraq (ignoring all politics or motivations). There are very few countries that are powerful enough to stand up to the United States on the battlefield. In 1990 Iraq was considered the fifth most powerful country on the planet. They got their asses kicked in a month in 1991. In 2003 they fared no better. After the invasion a bunch of civilians managed to get their hands on weapons and waged an effective guerrilla war, and proved to be a match for the United States, with much less equipment and training than the regular Iraqi army.

The inusrrectionists are fighting in a similar manner.

Basically this.

However Australia did not fight for independance. A better analogy would be the revolutionary war.

Really? Do you not see that we do the same now? There are literally DOZENS of things that we as people need to deal with right now, that will leave hundreds of millions dead in the future....and yet we still fight each other in wars all over the world. Right now, right this minute my friend, we have(just to name a few):

A food crisis the likes of wich the world has never seen. Read up on Monsanto, the genetically modified plants, and the terrible things we are doing. Half the world is starving, and we are feeding plants mixed with virus and bacteria to the ones of us who arent.(There are starving countries right now that burned the food we sent them, and would rather starve to death then eat what we are making, that should raise some flags. You kids have any idea how genetically modified food is really made? You realize the food modernization act is part of a slow process to phase out organic food and farming in the USA, wich is the grain belt of the entire world. I wonder how many of you will start figuring out whats going on by reading this?) And for those of you that are too short sited to see the big picture in this, the immediate issue is that these genetically midified plants have started infecting the farms not using them, and slowly all the plants are becoming part of the same gene line. Meaning next time we have something like the irish potato famine, or the maze famine recently in the usa, all the plants will start getting sick. All the plants.

An fossil fuel crisis. If we dont get it worked out now....or more so years ago....when we run out of natural gas, coal, and oil(and this will happen in your lifetime), millions will be left dead.

A economic crisis. Im an american, and i admitt full well that americans have done some -blam!- things. But the fact remains, the usa, is an economic super power, and if the economy here fails, its going to follow closely around the world to all the other super powers....because in truth we are all tied to closely together in a global market. This is no longer the world of the early to mid 1900's. In the information age, we all fall down.

A health crisis. The amount of sickness in the world today is way worse then you may know. Look at africa, parts of the middle east and asia. Do you really think that all the sickness will just stay put? It will spread, and with current health care and living standards, we cannot handle it.

An education crisis. Its not opinion or a joke....we are getting more and more stupid. The general rate of people who can use highschool math or use a spread sheet, vs how many can use facebook, is crazy. Who will solve the futures problems? Who will give us the next great leap into understanding, if the baseline general IQ keeps dropping?

And the list goes on, and in much greater detail then i care do get into here. The point is that very simply: We have very real problems right now...every bit as destructive to the human race and any alien threat could ever be....and yet we are fighting one another everday, all over the world.

The most believeable part of halo fiction, is the constant folly of man. That we were still killing each other, when our very survival was counting on our coexistance and working together. Seriously, we are all f'ed right up the a.

they most certainly were terrorist attacks, what do you you call blowing up a cruise liner over reach and suicide bombing cities with explosive truck tires. the innies killed millons of innocent civilians for no reason other than to scare the UNSC, and cause to public to want to appease them. the innies were monsters, they didnt deserve independance

These were terrorist attacks, I concede that, but need I remind you of the atrocities that occurred during the American, French or Russian revolutions? While these acts were inexcusable, you must look at them through the lens of a revolution, not mindless murder.

  • 02.02.2011 7:16 PM PDT

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Something along the lines that each colony wanted to govern itself, instead of it being ruled by Earth. Which would have helped them a lot, becuase to make a decision the colonies had to give a problem to their governor, have him present it to the UN on Earth, debate, make a decision, and then tell the colony what to do. Kind of ridiculous that a bunch of guys on Earth were deciding on what was best for the colonies when most of them had never ventured outside Earth.
