Only when I must.

From a realistic or storyline point of view, does a Spartan get too choose what type of armor they wear, or is it automatically assigned too them based on role?

Example: Would a Spartan choose too wear an Mark IV helmet or an Assault based armor set, or is that all decided for he/she?

Tru7h.Carnage.Bungie.

I'm not sure.
I think the start out with a standard set of Armor, and as they gain higher ranks, they are allowed to choose some of their own armor.

I think they use Mk IV,V, or VI usually and they use different permutations depending on the mission, rather than permanently changing their armor. Or they choose depending on preference. it seems like they choose looking at Noble Team.

Spartans are given standardised armour. Some missions may require mission specific upgrades e.g. EVA helmet for vacuum combat etc. For the most part Spartans don't have a choice. Noble Team have different variations basically to make them easily distinguishable in game. The canonical reason is that they each have specific roles within their squads and have modified their armour with tech that with aid them in these roles. Based on this we could assume that Spartans can request certain upgrades. I'd imagine Linda would have optic upgrades like Jun to make her more efficient. But like I said, Spartans don't choose their armour.

EDIT: It sounds like I'm contradicting myself. When I say Spartans don't choose their armour I mean they dont walk into a warehouse and choose whatever configuration they want. For the most part they don't change their armour.

They may request a more specialized armor for there roll, but its not one big mall saying "Heya Spartans! What armor you want? We got it all!"
Makes sense. Thanks, Switch.
(I went too quote your post, and I actually deleted some of it by accident, so I pressed quote again. The second time was after you edited, so, although my on-forum text showing your reply did not have the edit, the quote suddenly did. Haha!)

During the cutscene with Dr. Halsey Jorge mentions that he has made additions to his armor.

Some Spartans would receive mission specific armor, but I doubt they get to pick their armor. Considering the absolutely massive cost of MJOLNIR armor I would say that it is nearly impossible.

In addition to that, I wonder about NOBLE's coloring. Who paints combat soldiers blue? Maybe more after market modifications. It seems that NOBLE has too much free time.

I heard Carter and Kat were once part of "Blue team" (not related to S-II's) before they joined Noble. I'm too lazy to cite the source.

Whether it's true, or the backstory was cut, I'm not sure.

It was cut. Originally Kat was supposed to have been in Alpha Company with Carter. They were both part of a squad designated Blue Team, hence the armour colour. The story was changed but Kat's colours remained. The strange colours for some of the team are there to make them easily distinguishable to the player.

F0ck the police

It's all the same. Although special units like NOBLE team are assigned armor to fit they're specialty. That somes it up.

AFK: Away from Kontroller. Don't do it or you'll get the living crap smacked out of you by the Banhammer. If you disagree with any of this, you are just bad at Mortal Kombat.

As far as i can tell, Noble Team has the been the one few Spartan teams to have a choice in armor permutations and explains why they have extremely customized Mark V power armor. I also think that other Spartan's start out with the standard Mark V armor (the one the chief wears in Halo CE) but later can add other devices and what not. Just not to the extent that Noble Team customized their armor.

I think it depends on what they will need depending on their squad. But I do believe they have some selection.

I always thought that because of the high cost and the fact they are in the military; it was standard issue. Nothings as flamboyant as the Noble's armor in Reach.

I'd think they'd be issued different armor sets to help with their assignments, locations, missions, or positions within the squad.

If you spend millions on a super soldier, they aren't going to be able to choose their own armor. They wear what you want them to wear.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Spartan-IIs didn't, Spartan-IIIs might have.
