“If I had more skill in what I'm attempting, I wouldn't need so much courage”
Just finished Cryptum...FANTASTIC. Now, let the discussion begin.
Precursors left, vanished, died...they are for certain no longer around...Forerunner...lit the candle and loosed hell upon the galaxy in an effort to stem the tide of the Flood...where or when they are is a mystery, however, as previously noted, they may have all died as suggested by game data or they did in fact travel outside the known galaxy in search of new fertile ground to inhabit.
Now it is known they (both the Precursor and Forerunner) did possess the knowledge to lapse time, space, gravity fields, slipspace and subspace...etc, etc... and nearly death. The latter of the opinions seems to suggest that the Forerunner did in fact travel out of the known universe. This is not such a far off notion...consider at present time the nearest such galaxy is the LMC (large Magellanic Cloud) which is ~160,000LY from Earth/the Orion arm of the MWG (milky way galaxy), the next nearest is the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy) at a distance of 88,000LY and the third is the SMC (small Magellanic Cloud) at a distance of 210,000LY. Since, the ability to traverse time/space via slipspace, leaving a supposedly "dead" galaxy after the firing of the Rings, it would stand to reason, such technology would be put to use. Considering, the Forerunner were able to manipulate stars and system to fit their needs. If one can move the stars, then its no big tasks to travel elsewhere.
Now...in terms of the mysterious planet at the end of H3, it could be outside the galaxy, it could be in the past, present or future, it could very well be another dead planet resulting from the Halo effect, it could be a sanctuary. We simply do not have enough information to speculate about this. However, we do have enough to surmise a hypothesis about it. MB (Mendicant Bias) did lead one to believe he was atoning for past sins by send Chief to the Forerunner home...now if we recall, the Halo effect is basically a supermassive neutrino burst, when applied locally, its effect is devastating, however, when applied at distance the, such is the case when all the Halos fire simultaneously from pre-assigned coordinates, it produces a galaxy-wide effect. This means, up close it fries everything...structure and flesh alike, but from a far as a radiation burst...only the flesh. This world may very well be inside the galaxy but as a Shield world installation, not all shield worlds are sentinel built...some are artificial, while others are natural but enhanced through technology, to cater and preserve life, as noted by the Librarian through her tasking. (conjecture and speculation) this planet may be a safe haven for extra-special species, after all she (the Librarian) seems to have a thing for the Human species.
Furthermore, taking into the new information of the longevity of the Forerunner race, being that, they live for incredible amounts of time, I believe some stayed to stop the Flood, while other were able to escape the Flood to continue their race and preserve the Mantle...yes, according to some, we now have that tasking, but, such an advanced race would surely make with all haste to continue their bloodlines.
