I'll remain a soldier until the war is won.

Do Spartans even get a paycheck? Or are they just getting screwed in everyway possible, i.e. being kidnapped as children, spending their entire life in the service of the UNSC, and then IF they ever even get the oportunity to retire, have no money to fall back on.
I have a hard time imagining MC or Noble team liveing in a Veterans home.

I doubt they get paid, and I don't think the UNSC ever planned on having them retire. As in, they didn't plan that far ahead. They likely would fight until they were killed, crippled, or rendered too old to fight. At which point, they would help train new SPARTANs.

I agree with forthnback. At the time of the Spartans being kidnapped, and for the majority if not the whole time of the Spartans fighting, I don't think any officials involved in the program cared about them except Halsey and Mendez. Keyes would have cared, but he didn't know what was happening until it already happened. The ONI officials who wanted this all wouldn't have planned for their futures. They obviously wouldn't be able to go to normal life after they're too old to fight, so they'd likely become trainers of class II Spartan II's.

Of course, Reach changed that plan a bit.

Which makes me wonder.. why did none of the Spartans try to escape/rebel for their freedom? Sure there must have been one who's like ''hey, I don't want to do all of this for the rest of my life, and this is too insane and not what I want anymore''.

I believe Jai tried that with Adriana, but why'd they be the only one?

I believe they are aloud to retire if they wish. There was a comic that featured a retired Spartan. I'm sure they are paid as well, but when you grow up only knowing the military, with everything supplied for you, money is not your biggest concern.

Maria retired, but I think that was a rare exception. As others said, they fought until they went "M.I.A."

Seriously Oak, Ive been doing this -blam!- for 16 years, gimmie my Friggen starter Pokemon and dont call me till im the champion! ¬_¬

I'm pretty sure there Spartans' for life, they'll be Spartans until there corpses'.

AFK: Away from Kontroller. Don't do it or you'll get the living crap smacked out of you by the Banhammer. If you disagree with any of this, you are just bad at Mortal Kombat.

Spartan's are never done being Spartans, they just wait silently as they respawn.

My guess is that if a Spartan somehow didn't go M.I.A (Spartans never die remember?) That they would retire or if they wanted to, continue serving the UNSC (most likely to train more Spartans or work a desk job.)

As cool and heroic as they are, Spartan's were meant to be expendable (especially the III's, man they had it rough. SPI armor be damned!) and were not expected to survive for long.

HA! I just finished cryptum and started ghost's of onyx again (Mainly because my brothers lost my Fall of Reach and Destroyed first strike)but ive literally just gotten through like, the 2nd chapter

But those spartans really didnt last long at all, but i suppose that was the point, And the SPI armour was kinda cool, but im sure that opening chapter uses the idea of it "Melting" or "Sizziling" at least 12 times.

Do you know what kind of hat I'm wearing?

A party hat; you don't get one. An honor will this party be, a party in your honor, for your honor. Some of Tfear's personal guards are going to be there. You'll be introduced shortly.

Prepare to die.

Oh man, i still need to buy Cryptum (glad its going to be a 3 part series) and i just lost Fall of Reach too! By the ring, if i was an old man, i have a heart attack. The sorrow is just too much to bear.

You are going to love Ghosts of Onyx, trust me. I am further into the book and let me tell you: You are going to look at Sentinels in a different way (let's just say, they pwn and as weak as they on in game).

That prologue was one hell of opener wasn't it? Only Tom and Lucy survived, Lucy becomes mute sadly due to drama of being a survivor out of many Spartan III's. :(.

Never say you're bored. Never say you're satisfied with the world. Never stop doubting or questioning things. Always wonder. Always think. But always take time to drop your guard, you don't have to be smart all the time.

maria was the only sparten to retire.

  • 02.04.2011 4:03 AM PDT

Play for the game.

I thought because of the genetic enhancements to the Spartans that they had an "expiration date". I thought I read in Halsey's notebook (in the Limited/Legendary edition of Halo: Reach) that a Spartan could only last a certain amount of time before that Spartan's body degraded beyond usefulness. (eg. 30 years?)
Or am I for some reason mixing this up with the AI "age of rampancy"?

Halo is one of the most important part of my life.

Ahh, ok.

Whoops, lol

  • 02.04.2011 6:37 AM PDT

Impossible to say, since they are all dead or busy being MIA at the end of the series.

  • 02.04.2011 6:49 AM PDT

Spartans can retire and they do get paid a retirement fund
How ever its not a big deal for money in the unsc as only one spartan has even been able to enter it. But let me just tell you. the money could buy a whole frigate.

  • 02.04.2011 6:57 AM PDT

"Where theres tea, theres hope!"

Maybe they get desk jobs...

  • 02.04.2011 7:09 AM PDT

Space. The Final Frontier. These are the voyages of Murphy's Laws on the StarShip Enterprise

"Spartans never die; they're just MIA."

Otherwise, one ran away, and was never found, Soreen, I think, and yeah, one or two have run away, but come back. Otherwise, there have been some "rebels" used for external missions

It's a metaphor for the 07s' lack of identity. too old to be newfag, yet too new to be oldfag, we wander b.net in search of a home, forever trying to be something we are not.

I doubt most Spartans would want to leave military service, besides Maria of course and even then she stayed associated with the military, it is all they've ever known. They were raised thinking they were humanity's last hope. You can't just walk away from that. Even John after he saved the Galaxy from the Flood he is just waiting in cryo sleep for when he will be needed again.
