So I just started playing Halo CE again yesterday, as part of my annual "lets play through the entire Halo series in chronological order-session". Each time I do that I try to play the games without being all fanboy about them, and looking at them objectively.
I too have been one of those die hard fans from the first hour who have CE standing way up there on scale of epicness. I too have said I don't want changes made to the game if it were to be remade.
But I say "I have..." for a reason: I was actually quite shocked by how Halo CE feels today. Which is weird because I didn't have this feeling last year.
Let me just sum up some "problems" I have with CE right now. Things that need to be revised.
* Melee system.
I can litterally melee enemies without even touching them! At some occasions I performed a melee just to test if I wasn't going crazy and seeing things that were not there; but you can truely "hit" Grunts for instance, without actually touching them.
At the farthest reach of "my arm/gun" there still was about a meter between me and the Grunts, yet they all were hit and died...
* Movement.
Granted: you move nice and fast and feel like running. But you walk just a bit too fast. I seriously ran through PoA (1st level) in less than 10 minutes. Player speed should be reduced a bit because this is rediculous. Make it more in line with H2/H3. Maybe compensate: bring down player speed a bit, but add a standard Sprint option. Similar to Reach' but not as an AA, and lasting for a bit longer than in Reach.
Next stop: floatiness of the game.
In the remake things should feel "tighter". In the original CE you don't feel as if you're standing on the ground; instead you're floating around, and if you stop moving the analog sticks the movement seems to go on for a few milliseconds but its noticable and annoying.
Same goes for jumping: you almost feel as if you're tight to some hot air balloons floating around for a while. Tone this down a bit. Not as much as in ODST/Reach but the current state is just...odd.
* AI.
Quite logically: AI needs an update, even tho I noticed CE has the most challenging Grunts. Jumping from side to side all the time and such. The AI is still pretty good, matter of fact: CoD still doesn't have AI this smart, but its not on par with what we come to expect from Halo these days.
Not so much a flaw, but it needs to be adressed.
* Vehicles.
I refer back to my earlier statement about floatiness in movement: vehicles are even worse. The Hog is way too bouncy, Ghosts are too floaty etc etc. Make that more on par with the newer Halos.
Also: add boarding of vehicles! And let us be able to control Wraiths this time too!
* Weapons.
Make weapons feel as if they pack a bigger punch. They feel a bit unresponsive now. Also: buff the AR a bit, and tone down the Pistol to make it more in line with Reach'. I mean: Elites can take SO MUCH ammo from an AR, its rediculous.
And thats just from playing the first few levels.
Don't get me wrong: I still love the game. But I'm just not blind to the "wrongs" it has.
Also: I love how this is easily the most mature Halo of them all. When the Covies are invading the PoA you actually feel as if you're in the middle of that struggle. Blood everywhere etc: KEEP THAT!
But also add on top of that! Add assasinations to the remake, or at least give us Elites that will assasinate Marines. Add suicide Grunts etc.
In the end we will need to realize this: its a remake if you/we don't want to play a game that has some minor and major alterations we shouldn't buy it.
A remake adds new stuff, tweaks things etc etc. If we just want new graphics it would have been called the Halo CE: Graphic Overhaul...
And thats coming from a day 1 player...and it feels weird to say these things, but I really think we should see and accept things like that.
