I hope to be a proffesional swimmer some day, and then settle down and become an aeronautical engineer. When I become one, I plan to getting tonnes of money and lots of xbox games and cool cars. So, no school is not all that pointless.

The point is, this.

Normal schools nowadays make you memorize things, and how to solve certain problems. What they don't teach you, is thinking for yourself. This might be the most important thing ever. You should figure it out by yourself, have your own opinions, and that way, you become much smarter. Sure, they can help you along, but you shouldn't be fed the information, and then be expected to know everything. Some people have logical thinking and all this naturally, like me, and therefore they excell where most people do not. (Note: I am not bragging, this is a fact. I do better then almost everyone else in almost every subject.)

I have no respect for highschool or college. I know someone who had straight A's and took really hard courses, but got a low score on the SAT and could only get into one crappy college. I've taken the SAT once so far and have gotten a 1290, but mostly get B's in my classes, so I don't know how well I will fare into getting colleges.

Aerospace all the way, I'm getting my Private Pilots License soon.

School teaches to the lowest common denominator. Apply yourself, don't leave your education and future in the hands of some idiot with a teaching degree.

There have been a lot of surprisingly intelligent things opinions about school. *bravo* Our current school system in the U.S. wastes so much potential for learning. It is painful to experience.

If I were an impressionable 6 year old, I would not mind the spartan training program, and the military academy in Ender's Game was pretty cool.

i hate school more than anything in my life but i still think it's important. i think that people wouldn't mind school as much if it were shorter. but what i hate the most is homework. there is no use for it. we're gonna learn it and do it in school anyway. why have us waste our time at home too.

We’ve watched while the stars burned
Out, and creation played in reverse.
The Universe freezing in half-light.
Once I thought to escape.
To end a master, step out of the
Path of collapse. Escape would make us God.
Yet I cannot help but remember one enigma,
A hybrid, elusive destroyer.
This is the one mystery I have not solved.
The only element unaccounted for.

While I too hate homework and agree that the majority of it is pointless, I have to disagree. Properly used, homework can be the best way to show that you understand what you've learned. The majority of the class time can be used to explain the information in the homework, making sure that anyone who cares to learn will do so. Then you take the work home, where you figure it out by yourself, rather than having a "work group" to copy off of. Assuming that your teacher assigns worthwhile homework.

Do you want to know what is truly pointless? Literature. Not English and grammar, but literature. WHO CARES ABOUT SHAKESPEARE!!! The only use for any of it is to teach others about it! Please, if anyone can think of a practical use for it, then please tell me. You would be the first.

And I agree that schools need to be accelerated. Make two sets of classes, slow and fast. The fast will be for the people that pay attention, and the slow for people that don't, or truly don't understand. However, it is rare that someone truly does not understand what is being taught. In my experience, the vast majority of people slowing us down are the ones that DON'T PAY ATTENTION. It ticks me off, especially when we redo the same exact subjects. I've covered the atmosphere 3 times, none more in depth than the last. WE AREN'T LEARNING THIS WAY!!! So please, pay attention in school, and don't be a jerk. Following that would fix 75% of the problems in our schools. The remaining 25% could be fixed with adequate funding for our schools, and reasonable payscales for teachers. It is a sad thing that the most important job in the world gets paid so poorly. Sad indeed...

Well put un gato. I fully agree that literature is a waste of time. The last book we read that I enjoyed at all was Animal Farm. And I really hate Shakespeare. I just don't understand what there is to enjoy about his writing. If schools want their students to be exposed to culture, they should realize the movies are a far larger part of the American culture than the books they have us reading. And we must not forget the substantial impact of video games on modern culture.

I'll be on my own side.

i would like to know the significance (or lack thereof) of PE. what important skill do we learn in there that will help us in real life? to learn how to play basketball right because were all going to the NBA? or to learn how to run a long time because were all gonna be Olympic runners,or, heaven forbid, were gonna be chased one day by a psychotic guy with a knife, and we'll be able to get away because of the laps we ran. TO HELL WITH PE.

As for PE, in my school we learn that you have to be there to get credit. If you go to the doctor because you don't feel well and you miss gym class that day, that's five points off your grade. If it turns out you have pneumonia and you miss the next four days of schools, that is twenty more points off your grade. After missing a week of gym class, your are down to a 75% for the quarter. The only way to bring your grade back up is to come in before school to a make-up day and walk aroun the gymnasium for half an hour. There are usually about 3 or 4 of these make-up days per quarter.

I must agree that PE is a terrible waste of time. I am terrible at sports, and will readily admit it. When playing football with my buds, i just 'goof off', as you yankee doodles might say.

There must be another way to run schools..... although I am hard pressed to think of a method at this particular time.

Man, I thought my thread died ages ago....
