Let's put it this way: the game will not be the same as the original. It is bungie's game and level design etc and they have creative rights to it. Now, assuming Bungie didn't sign every single little aspect of the halo franchise including every aspect of their past games away, the game will have to be different.

How will it be different: Well they'll probably just change the level design and will probably have different multiplayer maps. The story will be the same since Micrsoft owns the rights the Halo. So the level design I hope will be bigger and better than the original (which is good but does get repatitive at times). The original level design was good since you had a lot of options. I also hope the enemy AI is similar to Reach (the best AI for sure). They said music will be the same as well - though some more variety couldn't hurt. Then I'm 100% positive they'll put in matchmaking - it'll sell more copies of the game that's for sure so it'll be in there. Every game today has online multiplayer and don't think for a second they won't put it in a halo game.

My theory only holds true if bungie didn't sign everything away from the original game away and that microsoft won't pay bungie royalties (haha which I just don't believe they would ever want to do). In any case I would welcome a remake with new level design and matchmaking keeping the story the same. Don't need a ton of new weapons but I'm sure there'll be some and they'll be balanced (no "reach" bloom I hope). I also hope movement and jump is similar to halo 2.

I actually don't see them making many mechanics changes. This is going to be a graphics boost and adding online multiplayer. The only thing 343 gives a damn about is that it's a quick and easy way to make everyone rebuy HaloCE. That's it; a marketing move.
Here's what will happen.
343 will only update graphics and add online multiplayer.
Everyone will be worried about the game not being from Bungie, but buy it anyway because it's Halo.
They will get the game, play the greatness that was CE
People will now think "Hey 343 didn't do half bad with that game maybe my fears of them raping the series in an attempt to cash in on name recognition are unfounded"
343 will release their independent Halo title with significantly less skepticism about their competence as a game company.

All about the money. Nothing more, nothing less.

If all 343 changes are the graphics and multiplayer than they will have impressed me. I think however that they will be far too tempted to make changes to the AI and level design which will just ruin it for me. The less work they do, the more confident in them I will be. For the reason that they recognize greatness when they see it and follow the phrase "if it aint broke, dont fix it."
