Joystiq has learned that the previously rumored remake of Halo: Combat Evolved will indeed launch this holiday season for Xbox 360 with a full visual overhaul. Sources explain that the re-release is not Bungie's 2001 Xbox game simply running at a higher resolution -- it's being remade with new art assets. While Halo's audio will likely remain unaltered, the controls will allow for more recent Halo configurations.

The Halo: Combat Evolved remake is allegedly being developed by New Jersey-based Saber Interactive, the company behind TimeShift and Namco's upcoming Inversion, but we've been unable to confirm the nature of the engine powering it. We understand that it's something other than the Reach engine.

The Halo: Combat Evolved update, one of two Halo games currently in development under the watchful eye of 343 Industries, is expected to support 1080p resolution and 3D televisions. Details on multiplayer are supposedly still being worked out, but we understand the remake will likely feature online co-op (the original game supported two-player split-screen co-op).

The game is expected to re-evolve on November 15, 2011, ten years after Halo: Combat Evolved launched alongside the Xbox. Their sources didn't know of any plans to similarly upgrade the recently disconnected Halo 2, but it's hard to imagine Microsoft playing favorites with its biggest franchise.

A true Halo remake would use the Owt Gnop engine. I suspect that won't happen though =[

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

I refuse to take Joystiq at their word until Microsoft, Saber or 343 officially announce that it's happening. There's no proof in that article at all.

oly oly oxen free

it makes sense to do a remake, release something that will compete with call of duty and battlefield before the inevitable "halo 4". keeps the profits flowing, and people will pay for it.

the idea of playing through all the classic moments with improved visuals and physics, is quite appealing. the beach on silent cartographer on a larger scale, 343 in hd, online coop on the maw.
hopefully they'll do halo 2 as well, those cutscenes would be very nice with improved visuals.

i suspect that this remake is probably quite likely, considering that reach was effectively a poor attempt at getting back to ce.

I've seen so many threads with the same info now.

LOL, fanboys are weird huh? I'm a fan of the Halo series, but I think this will rock!

I hope Sabre doesn't mess anything up, but with 343 watching over them, i doubt nothing too serious would happen.

Exactly. If they wanted a November Release date they would advertise it by now. With no advertising yet they are crying for a dead release against GoW 3 and Battlefield 3.

A remake is the worst option for a first game, especially when the original can still be easily played on both platforms it was released.

Fans want to see what 343 can do to expand the halo lore. A remake isn't the way to go, and they are promised hate.

If they don't change gameplay, new fans and reviewers won't like it. If they do, the 'hardcore' old fans will hate it. (Though true CE fans should just be playing the original and not drooling over a remake until it is confirmed.)

That and 343 + microsoft said they aren't interested in remakes currently, and there is no halo planned for 2011.

Are you serious?
Who exactly are you speaking for?
Do you have PROOF that you KNOW all the old hardcore fans and their opinions?

For me;
CE was just about the only game in the series I enjoyed. It just seems every release got more and more casual friendly.
From the article, it looks like 343 won't be developing the remake at all. (rather Sabertooth will)

Basing my opinions on the fact I've seen numerous people go "If they change a SINGLE THING about the campaign, I hate them!"

From that article, yes the current rumor is saber will make it with 343 overseeing it. Still a rumor though.

I'll probably pick this game up, but it'll never be the same if it has different art and whatnot.

Joystiq is alot more credible than you people give them credit for.
everything they post they have checked and double checked many many times. and hell of alot of times, the rumors they post are true.

I believe them.

This is my biggest fear. Owning every single Halo game, including wars, CE is my hands down favorite. The only thing that needs to be added are the exclusive multiplayer maps for the computer edition. I hate all the kids who've only played Halo: 3 and Reach wanting AA, added guns, and vehicles. It just won't be the same.

I'm with you. I don't care what Kotaku posts. They could take the most unreliable person and present their story as fact in a heart beat if that meant traffic to their site. Joystiq doesn't put anything out there unless they have 95% trust in the informant.

Just asking, I heard Joystiq said we could control Frigates in Halo Reach...

Also, It's not a matter if they are trustworthy, it's the matter of the fact the source isn't named, AT ALL.

Oh no...unless the games feels exactly like Halo CE, or feels like Halo 2 or 3, and the level structure laid out EXACTLY like Halo CE...then its going to be ruined.

They are going to ruin it...

This is what I was referring to. Some people want Halo CE, but shinier. Why can't they go played the original instead of fretting over a remake that may (probably) not happen?

Halo CE was the best in the series. I speak for a lot of people when, if whoever makes a Halo CE it will be to screw up. But considering how most of the Reach Campaign was terrible, they'll have to keep it real.
