"Time was your ally human. But now it has abandoned you. The Forerunners....have returned. And this tomb... is now yours". - The Didact

In Halo 3 ODST the main plot was some secret ONI mission ,save an engineer so it can give the UNSC info so that we can "win" this war.

So what kind of info would Vergil give us?

In the ending of the game it's revealed that Vergil would tell Jonhson what they are digging out there.

Johnson:"They're digging a mighty big hole":

Johnson:And you're gonna tell me exactly what they're looking for.And then, you are gonna help me stop 'em."

In other words Vergil would reveal them that they are digging a portal down there. But didn't the UNSC in halo 3 thought that they were uncovering the ark, till cortana and the elites came with new info.

Miranda Keyes;"Chief, the prophet of truth has found the Ark.Our only chance of stopping him is a surprise aerial assault.

Confirmation that the UNSC thought it was the ark.

Even when the frigates attacked the Keyship, the UNSC still didn't knew what the hell that was, till this:

Cortana:But it doesn't know about the portal, where it leads. On the other side, there is a solution.A way to stop the Flood, without firing the remaining Halo rings"

Cortana: Hurry Chief ...the ark...there isn't much time.

Spark:"I'm sorry"
Rtas:No matter ,oracle. We've heard enough. Our fight is through the portal, with the Brutes and the bastard Truth.

They didn't knew of the portal till cortanas info.Vergil told them nothing

1.He told johnson the same info as spark did, that the artifact is the ark. That makes the ODST story pointless.

2.He tells johnson it's the portal, and retcons many things in Halo 3.
Frigate attack=pointless
Half of the halo 3 campaign=pointless

3.The moment he was gonna tell jonhson,he suddenly is blowed up by it's bomb.

I see a big plothole here between ODST and Halo 3.

When your out of options, your trying the wrong options.

Do you think maybe Vergil thought the portal was the ark.

Do you know what kind of hat I'm wearing?

A party hat; you don't get one. An honor will this party be, a party in your honor, for your honor. Some of Tfear's personal guards are going to be there. You'll be introduced shortly.

Prepare to die.

I always tought they wanted to keep the city AI vergil from falling into the hands of the covenant. It has vital information and has the ability to manipulate everything in the city.

No because if he did then the entire ODST plot was pointless

  • 02.06.2011 7:54 AM PDT

It's possible that Truth thought the artifact on Earth was the Ark, thus Virgil thought it was the Ark as well.

This wouldn't make ODST's campagne pointless, because ONI had no information about the artifact.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Info that could give ONI valuable intel.

The covenant doesn't need to know how to manipulate the city when there is no city. Remember how they start glassing New Mombasa during the last mission?

That makes the ODST story pointless.

Well, that's a surprise...

ODST's story (that is a generous term) is shoddy to begin with, and seemingly hastily tacked on solely to give some substance to what was ostensibly a trial-run of the engine tweaks being developed for Reach. It wasn't a full game and it's story reflects that.

Personally, I would just feel bad letting Vergil die.

  • 02.06.2011 10:22 AM PDT

Hey.

Anybody else realise that Vergil may know more than just the ark, like maybe extra parts of covenant technology, for example active camo or how to reload a needler? Having access to a FRIENDLY engineer would be useful IMO

  • 02.06.2011 10:31 AM PDT

Vergil let them know exactly what truth was doing with the ark: that he used the keyship to activate the artifact. This is why lord hood knew to bomb the hell out of truths ship. Although the attempt failed, it was all they could do.

  • 02.06.2011 12:01 PM PDT

They were sent to secure the AI Vergil because he had found out about the Artifact and ONI naturally wanted the intel, and they were going to find the Engineer because of the knowledge about the Covenant it possessed, something invaluable to the war.

It is never explicitly stated what "Vergil" was able to tell them about, and I would assume that it wasn't very much about the Artifact because Humanity knows little about it in H3.
Honestly, are you so desperate now to find excuses to hate on Bungie that you resort this xD

No, we have Halo Reach for that.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Virgil had data about the excavation and the ruins found under New Mombasa.

  • 02.06.2011 2:38 PM PDT

He could have been the key in finding the Ark.

Actually i had been thinking this before Reach was released, when i still was that rabid overhyped Reach fanboy.

And besides if you paid attention to the end of the game, johnson was about to ask vergil about the Portal. So yea

What's the point of trying to destroy the keyship? If it's destroyed then they can't get to the ark.

If they thought it was the ark, then it means that vergil didn't told them anything or the engineer said them that it's the ark.

The latter makes the entire game pointless, because dare was all saying like "with it we can win this war"Or something like that.

I thought it would have been good if at the end, you had a chance to save Vergil, but you died, or let Vergil die, and you lived.

That would have been a nice ending.

Seriously Oak, Ive been doing this -blam!- for 16 years, gimmie my Friggen starter Pokemon and dont call me till im the champion! ¬_¬

See, im questioning ONI at the moment, whos in charge and what they really know

And my thoughts where that Virgil actually wasnt 'Just' a superintedent, In fact i wouldnt be suprised if he was wired straight into the forerunner portal artifact

Hell, where did the engineer come from? Apparently their Forerunner creations, so was it under there to begin with?

This combined with whatever "Latchkey" information cortana gathered from reach, and the digging of forerunner artifacts at the end of "The Return", there's deffinatly something big coming :P

  • 02.07.2011 12:39 PM PDT

^ I bet it's has something to do with the foreunners trilogy

"Question. Which Spartan is best?"
"That's a ridiculous question."
"False. Master Chief."
"Well, that's debatable. There are basically two schools of thought."
"Spartans shoot Sangheili. Spartans. Sangheili.....Battle Star Galactica."

I thought Vergil was cute. I called him Verggie!

GROSSMAN: Do you think of the Culture as a utopia? Would you live in it, if you could?

BANKS: Good grief yes, to both! What's not to like? ...Well, unless you're actually a fascist or a power junkie or sincerely believe that money rather than happiness is what really matters in life. And even people with those bizarre beliefs are catered for in the Culture, albeit in extreme-immersion VR environments.
