Subject: Operation Zanzibarian Freedom

Don't give me that Wegg, I watch TV, I know you have racoons. I'VE SEEN THEM, OK? Can't believe you'd keep them from me. What is this, a conspiracy? Keep the racoons from the Brits? Look, the independence thing was years ago, OK? GET OVER IT. I want to see a bloody racoon, and you're gonna make it happen.

Members of Bungie.net, here me! Once upon a time on this great website, shortly after the release of the majestic game, Halo 2, a great forum was on the rise. It was called Zanzibar, and not only was it the most popular forum, but it was filled with intelligent discussion about the game's matchmaking. Between strategies and custom game discussion, it was a glorious sight.

Over time, cheating became rampant, playlists grew old, and tensions began to mount. The majority of the posts were complaints, whether they be about how gameplay was not balanced, or how Bungie was not doing anything about cheating, Zanzibar became, and remains a wasteland.

The inhabitants of Zanzibar are in trouble. The many civil wars going on in the once beautiful forum has left the regulars stranded, without intelligence to feed discussions, and they need your help. That is why I reach out to you, the loyal, active Bungie.net community members and staff, to hear my plea. We need a new place to move these wars, this spam too. We need a place that the complainers can migrate to, so that the once flourishing Zanzibar, can become the greatest forum again. We need The -blam!- and Moan Forum.

This would be a place that, in my dreams, would be the center of all discussion of cheaters, gameplay complaints, basically everything wrong with Zanzibar as we know it. In this forum, all who feel the need to complain would have their area, all to themselves, where they can talk about how they were cheated eight times in a row, got banned/blacklisted unfairly, or how the gameplay is unbalanced. They would not be ridiculed, not be told that they were out of place, not be locked for speaking their mind.

In turn Zanzibar can return to all its glory, and the intelligent discussion can continue. I have created a Group for the purpose. Please join, and support Operation Zanzibarian Freedom.

Sorry BK. There is no intelligence left in the Zanz. She is too far gone to save. If we are lucky tho, she may still have one good -blam!- left in her.

We can save it! Of course there is no intelligence left, that's why we need to restore it. Believe!

Zanzibar is my first love, and like all first loves she will always be viewed through rose colored glasses. Zanzibar may be a fat chick with braces and an eye patch, but she looks like Marilyn Monroe to me.

I remember my old 'Save the Underground' campaign... not that anyone would know about it. It died before it began. I still think it was a good idea though... the paradoxal thing about it was that I'd never played an oldschool game in my life at that point. All these 'save the forums' ideas are started when somebody takes more of an interest in the forums themselves than what are contained within them.

Agreed. While it's great for members to take such initative, I find it's better to leave the "operations" and such to the mods. After all, you wouldn't want me telling you that your ideas are bad and mine are good, right?

Unfortunately most "save the ________ Insert forum name _______" movements are based on the fact that some members are displeased with how other members are using a particular forum.

By organizing an effort, it puts people into an "us and them" situation and nothing good comes of it.

It's been attempted before, usually with good intentions and with the highest hopes of success. But due to the polarizing effect of the public effort, there is always a counter effort and things get uglier from there.

The forums are intended to be dynamic, they grow, they change, they conform to the shape of their container. To everything, there is a season. (turn, turn, turn)

If any member feels that a particular forum has "gone downhill" I would offer some suggestions.

* Take a look at the other forums. No one is bound or obligated to use only one forum, the community is welcome to all public forums on this site. They're arranged by subject matter, not by participants.
* Set an example. If someone misses the old-school discussion in The Underground, or friendly chats about last nights Custom Games in Zanzibar... make those threads, find those threads. Give them your attention, nurture them and give people a reason to enjoy taking part in those discussions.
* Be the outstanding member that everyone is capable of being. By setting that example and showing the type of conversations that you enjoy being in, those two things combined can show some of the newer (and possibly confused) members that this community is about more than your mom jokes and complaints about MatchMaking.

But to organize a movement to "fix" a forum has never worked. I saw one such effort for New Mombasa that in just a few days had created a larger and more vocal "anti-movement" and the forum turned into a battleground.

No one wants a civil war. Especially me. Because I end up acting like a tiger in a SE Asian jungle some 30+ years ago. All I see is loud humans running around. Vietcong or American, they all taste the same to me.

Man, Recon. You should like save that in Notepad. You post something along those lines every time one of these threads come up. And, I pretty much agree with you.

Why does it sound like you're quoting lyrics from "Yes"? ;D

Anyhow, you're right. It's pointless to get worked up over these kinds of things. If something's wrong with a forum you frequent you have three choices - act to change it through your own posting, endure it or leave.

1) To Recon and Save Her Soul: Indeed.

2) There are in fact those who are trying to improve the community in Zanzibar. The Frontliners is a good name. We can't start a movement and expect to win. However, we can work bit by bit to make Zanzibar great again.

Never true about any forum, but I have to say that your last comment made me laugh. Just because the majority of a forum may be different, doesn't mean it has "no intelligence".

That wouldn't really help. Members would still make new threads about their complaints.

No, you can't simply be a moderator for joining.

Odd Shiv. I was under the impression that you and Weggie had at least a shred of intelligence.

There is some. I know, because I go there. That counts one person who can string together a collection of words into a complete sentence.

There are a few, but not enough to make it considered a lucrative "forum" any more. It's more like a big angry chat room.
