About the AI's helping civilians, remember in Contact Harvest when they described the AI "Mack" as everyones favorite uncle, always there offering helpful friendly advice? (I think there was an example about fixing a broken jotun)

Mack was an agricultural AI. His presence was essential to keep Harvest running. His main method of interaction was through the JOTUNs.

So it might be a situational thing.

Not the best, but not the worst. And I'm satisfied with that.

knock, knock

Uh...is anyone forgetting about i love bees? I know that it's sort of unclear whether or not it's canon, with Joe Staten saying it's not, but Frankie later saying it is, but it has a load of information about civilian culture. And for instance, Chatters and Opticans were originally introduced in i love bees, meaning at least some of the things in there are canon. I'll list down a few things here as well.

-A Surveillance Grid is used by the Colonial Administration Authority to keep track of it's civilians electronically. Bank accounts and personal identity are kept track of by using the grid, removing the need for individual keys. While technically anyone can go offline, they would have a severe disadvantage because of the numerous features governed by the grid, features such as the privileges to purchase goods or drive private cars, all of which can only be done while connected to the grid.

All of Earth's illegal immigrants are off the grid, and are essentially second-class citizens. They must either depend on charity or perform illegal work to make a living. Because they cannot keep electronic accounts, they use other forms of currency such as poker chips or a barter system to make business transactions. Certain businesses are aimed specifically at them, such as the Packbus.

Kinsler's police car was off the grid, and used the lack of surveillance to his advantage in his failed attempt to -blam!- Sadie.

-Unauthorized cloning is illegal. The crime is punished harshly, and is considered to have a severity on par with that of modern day child -blam!-.

-A PQI is a lie detector used primarily by the Colonial Administration Authority police.

-Moons is a variant of pool. Its revised rules include reversing the laws of movement. A ball, when struck hard, will move slowly, whereas if it is struck softly, it will move with greater speed.

Also relevant and confirmed to be apart of canon, Flip music is a genre that is a descendant 21st century heavy metal. Johnson is huge fan of flip, which is often played at dance clubs. (Although a lot of people dislike the genre, namely John 117).

Well this is all I can think of so far. More info on i love bees and related material can be found in the Halo wikia. Hope this helps.

I don't know how life would go, but media wise, the public would've been misinformed and deceived. As you said in your OP, the UNSC used propaganda very effectively to basically shroud the public with a false image of safety and security. I'm guessing the general public would've been alarmed and surprised when they saw Covenant warships descending into atmosphere.

Precisely. Until Reach fell, the people of Earth thought the UNSC was holding the line in the outer colonies, meanwhile the outer colonies were wiped out decades ago!

I don't think it's possible for civilians not to know that war is going badly, 'cause ONI can't (or they could, but I doubt they would) silence all the refugees and veterans.
You'd be surprised. ONI was capable of quite a lot. Going from colony to colony in 2552 is like going from the Earth to the moon today (With the exception of military forces). Who really goes there?

Inter-colonial civilian talk was non-existent. I'm sure it would be perfectly possible for ONI to cover up everything. They had propaganda officials altering photos, changing stories and paying people off since the war began.

Jesus, with power like that, they shouldn't be called the Office of Naval Intelligence. They should be called the Office of Every-Single-Thing-That-Goes-Through-Your--blam!--Mind.

They might as well be. Plus, they know things. A lot of things.

Everybody loves Grunts!

You mean Big Brother.

I couldn't tell you much about civilian life, except that people must have developed a way to live in supercities like New Alexandria.

Also, based on the way we are today, I would say that most major functions and a good part of the civilian's time is spent online or in a virtual world.

I'm not sure this is true or not because its something I heard on another forum years ago.

Chicago covered two or three states.

There were political problems on Earth. Politicians were saying the UNSC were over exagerating loses to the covenant to keep their martial law like control over the government.

Anti UNSC movements claimed the UNSC started the war with the covenant.

Apparently leet speak is still popular online judging from two ONI guys on a chat log in the Halo Graphic novel.
