The games always take priority over books, so the books need to be rewritten, not the games.

The books were just rewritten less than six months ago, mind you. This was 343's biggest failure, as well as Bungies. Probably just a lack of communication, but for those who bought the rewrites it would be a complete and total ripoff if MORE rewrites came out.

Yes, it would be a fail, however the failure was on Bungie's part for not even trying to make Reach fit with the books in the first place. I have never seen Bungie pull the "games>books" card. They always tried to make everything fit, but now they've changed, for the worst IMHO.

For many avid readers of the books, Halo: Reach was Bungie's giant middle finger to the Halo lore and the fans of said lore themselves.

The failure is on your part for not noticing how they did make the game fit with the books.

The Journal for example, written by the AUTHOR of the Fall of Reach.

Let's be honest, it could be a lot worse.

Why hate Reach so much. You can hav your opinion but I thought it was so cool with so many new features my head almost blew up! This was for ajw34307

This is correct, it's just the frustration of having to try to accomplish rewriting the books ( Counter-productive ) and the fact that 9 years of canon was changed ( I can't really say broken, as the canon isn't really broke, it simply added much to it and took out other parts ).

The real problem with the 2010 editions was that there were no fixes. There were actually more flaws, such as incorrect dates, wrong numbers ( A misprint said that the Covenant Fleet was 700 ships, but in the rest of the book it says 314 ).

And I know not many people usually care, but I found the new Covers to be very weird for the book they represent. All the Spartans have Mark IV armor, Blue Team is shown with MA37's, when they use MA5B's, and Plasma Repeaters and SMG's are not used in the books they are shown on.

Have you even read the journal? It clears up a few issues, but not everything. There are still many unfixable errors Reach caused.

I've read the Journal. It cleared up pretty much every major issue I could see in the campaign.

My point is, they are saying "Bungie didn't even connect the two at all! They PURPOSEFULLY made Reach to -blam!- up canon." When Bungie has the author of the novel which apparently has been contradicted in parts writing the item which connects to two.

Yeah, the journal covers everything and Nylund wrote the whole campaign himself and out of his own mind.

/sarcasm.

I almost forgot but this states the Battle of Reach lasted a month.

Source: Halo 3: ODST.

ok good for you. you know have one meaningless thing to support reachs timeline compared to the 5 books that support the original. that is just to say the 5 books that OBVIOUSLY support when actually EVERYTHING else supports it in some way
The books contradict themselves countless times with dates and names. I'd trust a string of games with one blatantly declaring that the Battle of Reach lasted a month than a handful of books that can't get their own dates right even after reprints.

ODST was made with Reach in mind.

Wait, didn't they already remake it? If not, What was the purpose of the reprint?

That statement is rather narrow-minded, I expected a little better of you Caboose by this point. I can't say whether there are errors left unfixed because I haven't gotten my hands on a copy of the Journal yet, but to claim that any of the "errors" in Halo: Reach are unfixable is really dumb. Any of them can easily be "fixed", there is a vast difference between "hasn't been fixed yet" and "utterly unfixable". Given enough time all these so called "errors" will be fixed, or don't need fixing in Bungie and 343's view, in which case people need to suck it up and move on :P

  • 02.10.2011 1:15 PM PDT

in my mind the only way they will ever fix the numerous problems in reach is if they remake or change its campaign. rewriting the books which are the original and the better version is dumb.

The only thing left that is problematic is the issue of how the LNoS got to Reach undetected. The Autumn being on Reach does not need to be explained, common sense can do that; and most of the supposed "errors" are fixed in Halsey's Journal.

Reach was already being made and planned while ODST was released. Thats why ODST has these tidbits like that mural with the dates on it.

Has anyone actually checked the dates, and correlated them with the book and games? I'm going to start investigating the timeline.

You're missing the point if you would suck it up in case Bungie told you to.

As I make my full two-post permanent exit from this thread, I will say that Eric Nyland seems to be the root of the problem here (as pointed out by inconsistencies between two of his works; one supporting Reach, the other, not supporting it (I refuse to say "going against")), and that I have nodded my head and silently agreed with nearly everything that has left Cmdr DaeFaron's mout-- ..hands in this thread.

Good day, kind sirs.

Except that Halo: Reach is a lot better and makes a lot more sense than TFoR's canon. It also fits in better with the canon established by pretty much everything else except for TFoR.

Get out!
Reach conflicted not only with The Fall of Reach, but also screwed up Ghosts of Onyx!
All the information that Reach gave about the Spartan 3's conflicted with the book, including some of the spartan's ages for example.

The Fall of Reach book cannon is much better IMO.

Whatever the case maybe, the game is forever burned into the canon and there's nothing that can be done to change that. I suggest people accept things for what they are. Trust me, you'll sleep better at night. If I was the the person who made the call to create revised editions I would've....well, there's no way in stinking hell that I'd even bother with em.

And where can this be seen again?

Elaborate upon "this".
