Subject: Am I the only who found Halo 3's campaign to be underappreciated?

I'm going to receive A LOT of flak for saying this, but I thought Halo 3's campaign was great and it was one of the strongest in the series. There, I said it. I know I'm in the minority in this, but I really enjoyed the campaign. When Halo 3 was released, almost everyone praised the multi-player, but the campaign was ripped-apart by nearly every gamer on the planet.

I never understood why many didn't like it. It thought the missions were very well-paced, provided epic set-pieces, great vehicle sections, great enemy A.I. and open-ended level design. It did have it's flaws, such as the short length, terrible friendly A.I., and Cortana (level, not the character herself). While the story wasn't as good as it could've been, it had a very satisfying ending, unlike Halo 2...

It rank it as my second or third favorite campaign in the series. I liked the campaign more than Reach and Halo 2. Yes, I liked it more than Halo 2's campaign, deal with it.

So, does anyone else share the same view? Or am I just a crazy person?

I really hope this isn't the only reply this thread receives.

I don't have to kill you quickly, you know

I thought that H3 campaign was great. It really brought the story full circle. Some many things about it seemed to tie back to CE than H2 did, and it could only be picked up on if you played enough of the series.

When Chief finally gets cortana back and she tells him to "keep his head down" again.

Then she uses the index from the first ring on the new one, so genius!

The final ride just like the first time, so much that was familiar, loved it.

You are crazy. I found Halo 3's campaign the best campaign out of all 4 games.

Yeah the same i really loved Halo 3 campaign even if the Level Design was better in H2(talking about MC mission, Arbiter missions were really pissing me off), the overall playing was awesome, i loved the epic vehicule moments and when you fight against scarabs. Well it's my favorite Halo campaign in overall (i thought H2 had the best MC level design, CE...PISTOL and SHOTGUN FTW !!!)

I generally regarded Halo 3's Campaign to be very disappointing. I sold it when I picked up Reach...

...and I regret that decision. Reach's Campaign is boring for me. Everytime I play through it, it feels like a chore and I end up pausing halfway through.

Halo 3's Campaign was very enjoyable for me in spite of my discrepancies with it. Every time I played, I would go back to The Storm or Tsavo Highway. Even when my disc could no longer play The Ark, I went out of my way to purchase a new copy. That level was way more of a large-scale battle than Tip of the Spear. I've replayed Cortana more than I have Lone Wolf in Reach...

I think it's Master Chief that kept me playing Halo 3. The only exception would be ODST, which I still replayed more than Reach.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

Halo 3 opened with a lot of fans thinking "WTF"?

How did Miranda, Johnson, 343 and Thel arrive at Earth? I find the most probable answer to be that they hitched a lift with Rtas on the Cruiser he boarded and took back from the Brutes (single-handed I might add). But we never saw any confirmation of this, the opening cutscene of H3 could have been set straight after Halo 2 ends and depict them all returning to Earth.

Hell, it could have been a mission. Play as Thel, steal the Phantom on the bridge crossing over to the Prison Block (there's Installation 05 in new Xbox 360 graphics), fly the Phantom up to the Cruiser (as fans always wanted to fly a Phantom in H2) and link up with Rtas. That's a pretty explosive opening right there.

Now the second mission, it could have simply turned Halo: Uprising into a single mission - an extended tutorial of sorts. You'd play as John aboard the Forerunner Dreadnaught and have to navigate through the ship to reach Truth, like the comic he fails to kill him and ends up leaping out of the ship and falling down to Earth.

Now Halo 3 picks up from the mission Arrival. An extra 2 short missions could have made Halo 3's campaign much better.

Dude, I could care less about the storyline in the Halo 3, when the campaign is just simply fun to play. It's as if I ever played any of the games for the story to begin with. They're decent as far as first-person shooters go, but they're not deep or thought-provoking.

How could they have hitched a lift with Rtas? He arrived at the beginning of floodgate and they formed an alliance then.

I like it how people who play Reach do something like go to sleep and people think therefore Reach is losing players.

Yeah, I loved Halo 3's campaign the most. It really felt like the galaxy was at war & scenes like the first scarab battle or the hornet dog-fight with banshees and phantoms in "The Covenant" are some of my favorite moments. But that's probably because I finished Halo 3 on my birthday! I just found that Reach was lacking this, there were so many missed opportunity's (Eg:Why are we still stuck with marines when there are apparently hundreds of Spartans around? How come we saw battles with 1 Scarab, 4 Scorpions, dozens of infantry, 5 Warthogs, 3 Choppers in Halo 3 and not Reach?

"Team shoot the wraith!"
"What's a team shoot and what's a wraith?!"
"It means we all shoot at the big blue thing together!"
"Okay!"
*starts betraying blue teammate*

Gameplay was wholesomely meh, it was far too short.

Otherwise it was a great campaign, I don't think I've seen another one with better cut scenes and voice acting.

Much better than reach.

Still using a pump-action shotgun over 500 years in the future I see.

omg not realistic stop game production plz

It wasn't as good as Halo 2's, but it still felt awesome because it was the final of the trilogy.

Halo Wars would like a word.

  • 02.13.2011 4:57 AM PDT

I currently am working on Halo Wars achievements. 4 to go.
I currently am working on Halo 2 achievements.
I currently have all Halo 3 achievements.
I currently have all Halo 3:ODST achievements.
I currently have all Halo: Reach achievements.

I felt like it just kinda wasted potential it had on Earth. I wish we had more Outskirts, and Metropolis type of levels. Plus, Thel was just pushed aside. Kind of a waste after what we went through with him in Halo 2. Just to name a few things, but I like the Halo 2 campaign better.

The visuals blew me away, but I just thought they were a bit lacking. The scene where arby gets killed was... Idunno.

I loved the story, next to Halo 2 and Halo CE it's my third favourite.

I've replayed Cortana more than I have Lone Wolf in Reach...

Dude, you shouldn't compare a level to an interactive ending. Lone Wolf wasn't intended to be a fun, action-packed mission. It was an interactive ending that conveyed the sense of hopelessness and desperation. It was a very effective ending I must say.

  • 02.13.2011 2:28 PM PDT

I like the Halo 3 campaign better than reach because it was a better story and all the glitches and easter eggs, like skulls.

δόξει τις ἀμαθεῖ σοφὰ λέγων οὐκ εὖ φρονεῖν.

Euripides, Bacchae. 480.

Halo 3's campaign was good, but probably the worst of the series. ODST's campaign was the best.

No, that would be Reach. The best is arguably Halo: CE, even with it's repititive corridors, it had the best mission design and the most memorable set-pieces in the series.
