Halo 3's campaign was good, but probably the worst of the series. ODST's campaign was the best.
No, that would be Reach. The best is arguably Halo: CE, even with it's repititive corridors, it had the best mission design and the most memorable set-pieces in the series.

Halo: CE was good for it's first few time and in co-op but it got old quickly. There's not much replay value, because the levels are copy pasted and the game feels too easy on Legendary.

The storyline basically just focuses on you, Cortana and Foehammer and that's pretty much it.

Gameplay- and storywisely the worst one would have to be ODST.
Halo 3 lacked everything Halo: CE and Halo 2 had. It feels just mediocre overall.

Halo: Reach, on the other hand, the story was decent/lacking but the gameplay has to be one of the best ones, yet. Can't be the worst.

Halo 3 opened with a lot of fans thinking "WTF"?

How did Miranda, Johnson, 343 and Thel arrive at Earth? I find the most probable answer to be that they hitched a lift with Rtas on the Cruiser he boarded and took back from the Brutes (single-handed I might add). But we never saw any confirmation of this, the opening cutscene of H3 could have been set straight after Halo 2 ends and depict them all returning to Earth.

Hell, it could have been a mission. Play as Thel, steal the Phantom on the bridge crossing over to the Prison Block (there's Installation 05 in new Xbox 360 graphics), fly the Phantom up to the Cruiser (as fans always wanted to fly a Phantom in H2) and link up with Rtas. That's a pretty explosive opening right there.

Now the second mission, it could have simply turned Halo: Uprising into a single mission - an extended tutorial of sorts. You'd play as John aboard the Forerunner Dreadnaught and have to navigate through the ship to reach Truth, like the comic he fails to kill him and ends up leaping out of the ship and falling down to Earth.

Now Halo 3 picks up from the mission Arrival. An extra 2 short missions could have made Halo 3's campaign much better.

Dude, I could care less about the storyline in the Halo 3, when the campaign is just simply fun to play. It's as if I ever played any of the games for the story to begin with. They're decent as far as first-person shooters go, but they're not deep or thought-provoking.

I couldn't give a flying toss that you don't care about the story, I do, it's my main attaction to Halo, it's what got me into the games in the first place. Believe it or not, when you're playing campaign, you're playing a story. -_-

You clearly don't know anything about Halo's story by saying it's not deep or thought provoking, go read the novels, they're written by some of the most famous sci-fi writers of the past few decades. Halo 2 had some especially subliminal themes to it, but people like you look past all that because all you care about is blowing stuff up.

50s in: Slayer, Doubles, Lone Wolves, Objective, Ranked BTB, Swat, Snipers.

I enjoyed H3's campaign.

I like your spawn can I have it?

I really enjoyed it, and have played through it several times with my brother. Only part I didn't like about it is the Ranged Form of Flood. It's the only thing I've found to be annoying in the single player.

I run Skirmish!!!

it was a really fun campaign, makes reach's campaign look stupid... the ark and the covenant levels back to back were so much fun. the epic battles of all the different units and characters going all in for the fate of the galaxy. alot more epic then reach

Wow, I'm slowly being tempted to join the anti-Halo/Halo is overrated camp, when ever I encounter blind Halo fanatics like yourself. The fact the cherish the lore and story behing the Halo series as some kind as a bible, shows that you need serious help. The storyline in these games were never THAT great, and the lore, while interesting, isn't fascinating or original in the slightest. They just repeat the same common sci-fi tropes we've all read before. The fact you take it so seriously, proves that you had too much free-time with the Halo universe.

In reality, when I play the campaign, I'm basically playing a f***ing video game with a storyline to go along with it. It admit that the Halo series have solid storytelling (Well, Halo: CE through ODST to be more specific), as far first-person shooters go. They're still not the very best in video games, hell, not even in the medium. Probably because the XBox wasn't my first console, the Halo series weren't the first first-person shooters I've played, nor was Halo: The Fall of Reach was the first sci-fi novel I've read.

I like the Halo novels. They're cliche, but action-packed and well-written enough to have kept me hooked. But are they Pulitzer or Hugo prize worthy? Absolutely not! Yes, I care sticking plasma grenades onto alien's crouch than the story, because that's the main attraction of the series. It's not the "grand" storytelling of the franchise, it's the gameplay. The reason why I play the Halo series, and many video games in general.

If I wanted to play games generally for their storytelling, and I'd rather play these games:

- Planescape Torment
- Mafia: The City Lost of Heaven
- System Shock 2
- BioShock
- Silent Hill 2
- Half-Life 2
- Marathon series (Created by Bungie of course)
- Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
- Deus Ex
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
- The Last Express
- A Mind Forever Voyaging
- Star Control II
- Dragon Age: Origins
- Shenmue I & II
- Mass Effect series
- The Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen & Soul Reaver
- Fallout 2
- Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
- Red Dead Redemption
- Panzer Dragoon Saga
- Final Fantasy III or VI in Japan
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Grim Fandango

These games have truly great storytelling, that would make the Halo series pale in comparison. Yes, unlike many Halo fans, I've played many video games that aren't Halo.

EDIT: I will say the Halo series did have potential to have great storytelling (at least by the standards of the medium). Unfortunately, it was never tapped. Halo 2 seemed like it was heading to the right direction, but it immediately shot itself in the foot by offering a pointless cliff-hanger as an "ending".

Halo: CE has just as much replay value as any other Halo game, due to it's vast outdoor enviroments, sandbox combat, dynamic A.I., and co-op. Hell, battle encounters play differently everytime you play it, including on higher difficulty levels where the enemies become smarter and tougher. And of course the story just focuses on the Master Chief's saving the galaxy from a destructive weapon, that's the whole damn plot. Complaining about it would be equivalent of complaining how the storyline in Mass Effect 2 focuses on Shepherd and his crewmates saving humanity, but not exploring the daily lives of the random, non-interactive NPCs. Also, at least clarify reasons what Halo 3 lacked that Halo: CE & 2 had. You're not providing any compelling arguments here pal.

Halo: Reach's campaign is arguably the worst in the series. I would explain why, but I'll let him do the talking.

I like it how people who play Reach do something like go to sleep and people think therefore Reach is losing players.

I guess it's just a matter of opinion. I personally thought Halo: Reach's campaign had the most variety in the series in terms of level design and how many different enemies you can fight each time almost at once.

I personally didn't like Halo 3's campaign very much because it didn't feel as great and epic as the previous Halo games, and the ONLY memorable parts of it were during the Ark and the Covenant, but not before and after these levels. The story felt lacking compared to Halo: CE/2 and it left more questions than it answered to me.
