I mean, they were at Tier 0 on the Forerunner's Technological Achievement Scale in the Haloverse. Which is super advanced, like the Ancients from Stargate.
I do not mean all of them, but what if one half evolved beyond dieing in a way of being an almost omnipresence creature, that is forever hungry, and not just for flesh, but for more knowledge. Yes, some Precursors became so obsessed with knowledge to an extent that they eventually turned into what we now know as the Flood. Possibly with genetic alterations, but mainly for their last for knowledge did they turn into the Flood. Always devouring the flesh and bone of intelligent life... Gaining their knowledge at the same time through it's telepathy. Some Precursors possibly evolved into energy, or leaving the Milkyway seeking other means of gaining knowledge from other galaxies.
Anyway, there is a thread about them being human. But that supports the theory of some Precursors turning into the flood, because of their need for knowledge. Humans have notably been the seekers of knowledge yes? We want to know everything about the universe. So what if the Flood was a group of Precursors, or heck, ONE Precursor who evolved himself into a creature that not only "devours all knowledge" but devours all flesh.
But I suppose trying to fit all knowledge of the universe into flesh would cause mixed singles, and that is why the Flood isn't a completely unstoppable force.
I bet humans are the "Inheritors" because their 200,000+ year old ancestors possibly cause the Flood to exist in some way.
And that's all I got.
