Subject: Halo has so much depth. It is very deep.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

I had an interesting conversation with my friend about the Halo universe. It laster a long while and was refreshing to discuss the universe with somebody. He told me this forum used to be full of conversations like the one we had. I'm sure there still are, but not as much.

Anyway, don't you think Bungie could have made the story a lot deeper? They really simplified it in the games. Then, you read the books and the other wealth of knowledge we find with words and it's truly amazing. I think the games have good stories, but they could have been a lot deeper.

For example: The schism within the Covnenant. They could have really went in-depth and focused on the Elite's breaking away from the Covenant. Also, they could have made Mendicant Bias and the Gravemind more prominent.

By this I mean they could have made the story between Mendicant Bias and the Gravemind more then just text in the terminals. They could have had some sort of...what's the word...viewing of their story. I doubt many people bothered to read the terminals, anyhow.

They could have done the same with Reach. In fact, they could have made Reach the most in-depth. They could've brought out more behind the Spartans. You're defending their planet. They could have made flashbacks to the Spartan-II's (or III's, I guess) childhood. Instead of fighting to save just any old planet they should have put more meaning behind it. Say, in a flashback you see the building where the Spartans learned and bonded. Then, during the campaign you have to defend that building because the Covenant want something with it.

They also should have made the combat more global. It seemed like you were fighting on such a small scale. It didn't feel like you were fighitng for the planet or for anything important.

Also, it would've been nice to know more about every day life. About the civilians that lived on Reach. Or, for the civilians that lived in New Mombasa in Halo 2. They demostrate pretty good in ODST. But, throughout you don't really know who you are defending on a personal level. Yes, you're fighting for humanity, but who are the people who make up humanity? What do they like to do? Where do they go to eat? etc...

I'm not trying to make this a negative thread. Or a hate thread. I love Halo and the universe. I'm just stating how Bungie could have made it a lot more deeper. Because, in reality, the haloverse is very vast and deep. I realize it's hard to put these things into games. It's hard to tell the story at hand and also go more in-depth with other things.

Anyhow, please discuss.

What is that supposed to mean?

Let's be honest, it could be a lot worse.

The reason the games had a bit of shallow depth to their story is because thay are a video game made to have fun playing not to tell a huge story. That is just my opinion though.

I fully agree with you.

Maybe Bungie didn't do that kind of things because most of the people who play Halo aren't that intrested in the story and books.

But other fans like we do..and they give us the terminals for that.

I hope Halo 4 changes this.

Considering 343 Industries have supplied us with great stories like Halo Legends, Halo Evolutions, etc...I hope that their Halo games have a lot more depth to them. Fans like you and I will be very please, if that's the case. The continuation is for the story anyway. I would think they would want the story to be the best it can be.

Dude, pick up Halo Cryptum! It delves into the forerunner backtsory. Including Medicant Bias.

I did. Sadly, I find it boring. As much as I love the Halo universe, it just lacks excitment. I've read up to Chapter 21. Everything is very slow moving. I guess it gets better as time goes on.

I didn't say Halo: Reach had depth. Actually, I said quite the opposite.

I'm all for opinions and stuff but what?

Cryptum, in my opinion, is the best novel yet. It blows Nylund's stuff out the water. Cryptum is a lot like Ghosts of Onyx, only it's Ghosts of Onyx on fire, going 130 miles per hour through a hospital zone, being chased by helicopters and ninjas. And, the ninjas are all on fire, too.

In all seriousness, I really appreciated the more historical way Greg Bear presented the story. Reading battle scene after battle scene in some of the other novels gets a little repetitive after a while, every page of Cryptum comes with a new revelation with fantastic description and Bear clearly knows what he's doing.

I understand what you're saying, but from what I've read so far, there hasn't been much going on. They search Charum Hakkor and the other planet. See that the prisoner escaped and are now talking with another Promethean. I'm not saying it needs to have battle scene after battle scene, but they need something exciting. No offense, but traveling from place to place isn't too exciting for me.

Seriously? The action comes later in the book, you've got to get introduced to the characters cmon! This book is now in my top contenders for the Halo universe.

I recommend you finish the book before coming to play with cannon theories or ideas about how things should be.

Unfortunately this, I've read some of Cryptum, and while I like battle scenes, I find this much more interesting, mainly because I was always into forerunners and precursors, etc.

You're right, but you don't have to read it to have ideas about how things should be. I only read some and have some pretty valid reasons on how some things should be.

Well pertaining to some things you mentioned, you might have a different thought once you've finished the book.

  • 02.13.2011 4:55 PM PDT

We will know soon enough, but it will require thought. Deep thought. Mendicant Bias must be found. The Mantle will soon follow.

You say the Spartans in Reach should have been fighting for a planet with more meaning than Reach?
