It is sometimes argued that Marathon and Halo take place in the same universe. This is not the case. However, they are parallel universes within the same multiverse, and a kill ball is the Haloverse equivalent of a W'rkncacnter. At the beginning of the universe, they were unmistakable in their entities, but as time has gone by, their existence has become difficult to detect among the chaotic elements of the universe, hidden in stars, trapped in storms, forever looking along the event horizons of black holes. Setting one free in ordered space is difficult and insane.

They are there just for game play reasons, I doubt canon was even considered when they were implemented.

Walk softly, and carry a big midget.

Multiplayer and Forge have elements of canon, but aren't canon themselves.

Never say you're bored. Never say you're satisfied with the world. Never stop doubting or questioning things. Always wonder. Always think. But always take time to drop your guard, you don't have to be smart all the time.

I believe that they fall into the same category as the golf club, Bungie added them because they are fun.

Golf Clubs are canon. Spartans live by the "Work hard, play hard" motto.
