Thinking logically I would assume that Bungie could add in (and they have) new Firefight maps, not sure for campaign, would take more time and money with voice actors and the like, but anyway other games such as World at War and Black Ops have similar game modes to Firefight known as Zombies.
Gears of War 2 has horde (if I remember correctly they had DLC for Horde? Not sure, not a big GoW fan), and if they added maps for that as well I see no reason why Bungie can't add maps to Firefight...
Unless those Zombies and Horde maps were already shipped on the disc waiting to be unlocked...
Also, what about armors? I've seen DLC armor in many games before, the most recent being Dead Space 2 and just like Halo's armor it is partially cosmetic (not including Store discounts and armor strength), some of the DLC armors are basically older armors with a newer skin and/or form.
So why putting in armor for Reach is impossible I'm not sure...then again Dead Space 2 IS a single player game so my argument is in danger of failing for this stance on the armor issue.
I could see a possible update in the future to support new armor permutations regardless of downloading the Defiant Map Pack. Hell, maybe the new armors will just be Free DLC they will put on the Marketplace.
Guess only time will tell here...
Your example for Dead Space 2 is invalid. All the armor and weapons in Dead Space 2 that can only be obtained with real money (i.e. "DLC") is actually already on the disc. When your purchasing, what you would consider, new weapons and armor for Isaac Clarke your actually spending money on a very small key that merely unlocks content that was already on the disc to begin with. This is just another way EA is trying to rip you off. We all know the whole "buy a game new and have the multiplayer unlocked for free" trend isn't going away anytime soon either.
Personally, I refuse to spend extra money to unlock content on a disc that I already own.
