Subject: The Defiant Map pack & Canon

I felt is was very nice of 343 to take a turn towards the Fall of Reach novel canon with the new map pack. The ways I noticed this were:

Condemned: The map takes place on Reach Orbital Gamma Station, which played a big role in the Fall of Reach. The Background also shows the about 2/3 of Reach glassed and much debris outside from the Space battle ( Which didn't seem to occur in Reach's campaign. ), much like the scenery described in the book.

Highlands: Another Location mentioned, the Training grounds of the Spartan II's. It feels awesome to finally see it, as well as the cool set piece of CCS-Class Battlecruisers glassing Reach.

Unearthed: This map is actually an area from Reach Campaign, Tip of the Spear, which also takes place in Viery. I'm not sure weather the events here occurred in the book, but It's awesome ( And a cool resemblance to Lost Platoon. ) non the less.

I greatly appreciate 343 for taking the steps towards the book, and for Bungie creating the game, obviously ( I would of preferred a more book canon approach, but oh well. ).

Concerning Condemned, when you were in space it was before the space battle, and you weren't near the defenses lol. Anyway concerning planet being glassed, I noticed how it seemed overdone, I didn't think glassing caused the planet to glow like that <_<.

Unearthed, yep it takes place in the same civilian sector as Tip of the Spear.

Either way, the new maps look awesome from what I've seen and I personally can't wait to try them out.

The time that Condemned takes place is at about the end of the Fall of Reach ( The actual battle ). The Planet is still heated and covered in glass molten as the glassing process hasn't been completed.

Well, no one's ever seen a planet while the glassing's in it's highest phase; we've only seen preludes, aftermaths, and small events. That being said we should probably use the version in Condemned as a reference image when we think of glassings.

I'm pretty sure glassing a planet would cause it to glow considering you are heating the surface to thousands of degrees, if not tens of thousands. Now I haven't seen the trailer in a while and from what I can remember I do think they did exaggerate it a little bit.

It's much closer to the original, more terrifying image of glassing from the books, which does describe planets as having large glowing patches

The problem with it glowing that much, it would mean the bulk of the planet is glassed. If the bulk of the planet was glassed that would not only destroy any plant life (turning it into a barren world.) it would destroy the atmosphere.

Since in the book we are told about the admiral standing in a cave without a sealed suit, and trees/grass outside I'm unsure.

Eh, might be my views on it.

Edit: Burning/glowy patches yeah, but in the trailer (I'd have to rewatch it.) it looked like the half the planet you could see was on fire.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Bungie was probably like, "S*it. They've made The Fall of Reach more accurate in this map pack then we did in the entire campaign!"

From what I remember they were glassing most of the planet, not all of it. This was because they were still looking for Forerunner artifacts.

The Covenant didn't glass the area around CASTLE base because they wanted the crystal. There may have been other areas that survived the glassing, at least for a time.

Lol. I loved Reach's story, but I'm just more hooked towards the books.

Condemned appears to show entire continents of the planet reduced to molten slag and glowing, which seems to contradict the statements made by the committee of minds in the data pads which says that the covies only razed from orbit human population centres, not entire landmasses. And reach was quite sparsely populated too.

Oh dear!

From what the trailer had to say and the condition of the areas the maps are in I'd say the maps are meant to represent a time frame of August 30th 2552 or later. Meaning after the major events and the arrival of the main covenant fleet.

It's not made by 343, it's made by the same company that made the Black Ops map pack I think.

That had best not be Reach, if we're all talking about the same thing.

0:19 in the trailer looks more like a star. Even a "proper" glassing would leave recognizalbe features and gaps in the burnt areas.

edit: later on in the trailer, the damage looks less severe. Give the situation in PoA a few hours, and it'd probably look like that. The "glow" is mere atmospheric disturbance.

No, they laughed.

Reach was the big middle finger to Microsoft, Bungie hated how they got their noses into their business. They even said in the "Next Ten Years" Vidoc: Give us your money, and get out of our way.

Reach was there to piss Microsoft off, not to be canonically correct.
Eh, what?

I noticed this too, but remember, the Assembly, at the time, was only exposed to 1 years of knowledge and virtually no experiance with the Covenant's weapons. They were bound to make mistakes.

Plus they were talking about literal glassing (literally turning a planet to glass) not just incineration.

the Covie ships can galss one acre of land per 15 seconds of Projected Energy beam fire. It would take years to Glass all of Reach.

The way Bungie showed reach glassed looked much better.

I disagree. Bungie completely nerfed Covenant glassing power. They turned it from, "The covenant can glass entire planets within days" to "It would take 20 years of 100 ships to glass one planet lol."

It completely ruins much of what we've been told before. The Covenant show up. Glass the planet leaving it completely devoid of life, then they move on. It's they always did, with few exceptions. Hell, ONE ship. ONE. COVENANT. SHIP. Nearly wiped out Harvest until massive reinforcements arrived.

Glassing now is pathetic. I hope the "datapads" aren't considered canon in 343's eyes, much as how they have slightly disregarded the Halo 3 Terminals.

It is possible that the reason it takes so long is because Reach is much bigger than Earth and technology may have improved since the Battle of Reach.

Again, see my above post. No one said this was the case. Assembly was talking only based on one year of war and operating under the preconception that we could fight the Covenant.

As it stands, the Assembly was wrong. The end of the campaign and Condemned (along with the rest of the Halo canon) prove this.
