Subject: Huh, So there WERE Brutes on Installation 04

I can't believe I missed this in Halo 2's Collector's Edition Manual.

"As ever, Jiralhanae accounts of the conflict are unreliable and their accounts of
this Human's abilities and actions are absurd. No Human is capable of the things
they gossip and chatter about. I suspect panic and excuse, as well as confusion
caused by the spread of the parasite."

RED BRICK STUDIOS!

Unless, of course, we're referring to 20 years prior.
Jk, it makes complete sense. Good find.

I don't think it was talking about 04, maybe Reach...
Nope. Here's the whole thing:

To Prophet of Truth
Most high and honored Prophet: It is with the greatest shame that I lay myself before
the judgment of the Council. I expect and will accept no mercy. My failure in this
matter is absolute; I embrace my responsibility and await my punishment.

The disgrace and blasphemy at Halo was an abomination caused by my
incompetence and failure of judgment. Although the tales and rumors of
the Demon have basis in fact, much of this talk is Unggoy superstition and
exaggeration. Certainly the Demon, a Human, activated a catastrophic engine-
failure sequence on the crashed Human vessel, but it was allowed to do so
because of failures in security measures and tactics for which I bear full responsibility.

I have no good news to relay, but the Human action was suicidal, either by
accident or design. I believe none of them escaped the catastrophe.

As ever, Jiralhanae accounts of the conflict are unreliable and their accounts of
this Human's abilities and actions are absurd. No Human is capable of the things
they gossip and chatter about. I suspect panic and excuse, as well as confusion
caused by the spread of the parasite.

The Human in question is certainly unusual, although not the creature it has been
described as. It stands taller than most, is faster and more aggressive, but still
irrevocably a Human animal, worthy of neither fear nor respect. It is merely an
exception that proves the rule. As always, Humans remain beneath our contempt.
Their failure at Reach compounds their defeat. We sense that their defenses are
failing rapidly. I have gathered information on the Human's armor, abilities, and
weapons, which follows this report.

Perhaps more worrisome is the discovery and subsequent conflict with the
parasite on Halo. This monstrosity festered, rotted, and waited on the Holy
World, and although we cannot be sure, the Humans may have released it from
its shackles. I do not presume to know the unknowable, but I suspect that the
Forerunners meant this filth to stay imprisoned forever. The sacred grace of Halo
was polluted before it was destroyed.

I await my punishment with faith and honor.

--Supreme Commander, Fleet of Particular Justice

The Flood wasn't on Reach though.

  • 02.15.2011 7:23 PM PDT

If somebody's opinion is being smashed and nobody's helping, I try and help. I use logic and extensive vocabulary (and sometimes self-destructive circular reasoning) to confuse my enemies into submission. Fear me, trolling, fapping creatures of the night. For I. Am your worst nightmare.

Since when did it mention the Flood on Reach?

probably 04 though. Accidental Canon Break. lol
To be technical, it was never explicitly (Sp?) stated that there were no Brutes in the books.

I believe they're talking about the Spartan operation FIRST STRIKE, which resulted in the loss of hundreds of Covenant ships prepared to head for Earth...

Then why would Thel have put it in his report if he was not in that locale?

That manual doesn't have communication excerpts from the first Halo game specifically so it doesn't prove that Brutes said that on the Installation 04. If I am thinking of the same manual as you are.

Because the spartan that caused the damage survived because Thel failed to kill him not once, but TWICE. (at Reach, and then on Halo.)

I think it's directly related to his failure to protect Halo.

I just read the description. I think the Elite is addressing the Brute's exaggerations of a Spartan's abilities, not specifically Chief's actions on the first Halo.

The choice of words (Jiralhanae accounts of the conflict) heavily implies that there are reports about the battle on the Ring written by Brutes.

This is Thel's report of his failure; post Halo CE, on Installation 04.

Just because we didn't see any Brutes on 04 doesn't mean they weren't there. The fiction of the Halo universe covers a much broader spectrum than the action we see, first hand, when playing the game.

We never saw any Engineers in the Xbox version, doesn't mean they weren't there, though. Does it?

yet.

Thel followed the PoA with all the ships in his command, and I doubt any Brutes were present.

Where does this say it has anything to do with Instalation 04?

It is possible to commit no errors and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.

Cheeto is the only one among you that doesn't suck.

The part where it says the parasite was released. Because at the time of the report, the only outbreak of the flood had been on 04. So yes, it is talking about Installation 04. Not even sure why there is any debate on this, it's fact, this report is about the events of Halo CE.

True... I guess there could have been a few brutes XD I guess there was so little the cheif never had to fight them :)

I am a practicing traditional Catholic.

If brutes were there that could very easily account for the ring being lost to the humans. lol.

You were totally and absolutely correct in every way, I don't know why we were arguing, you're so amazing I should never have doubted you.

Just because MC didn't encounter any Brutes doesn't mean they weren't there. However, in First Strike he viewed them as though it was a first encounter, despite the fact that he would have at least been informed of them after Harvest.

The first paragraph I quoted doesn't imply that he is refering to First Strike as he's unsure of what happened to the Chief after the destruction of Installation 04.

The second paragraph does appear to imply that Brutes were in Installation 04. It could be that the Brutes were talking about the spartans in general though. Although, Thel says "This human's ability", so maybe it might not be that either. I hope this is just a canon error. Otherwise, it's an excuse to put the Brutes in the halo CE HD remake.

How can it be an excuse for a rumored remake if this was put in so early in the formation of the Halo Universe?
