Subject: UNSC fleet during "The Storm"

Where were they? How many ships were left?

After watching the cutscene, all you see is 3 frigates along with several dozen Longswords, was this all that was left of the UNSC fleet?

Another question, why didn't any of the UNSC fleet accompany the Separatist fleet in the portal?

Bungie is terrible at portraying scale.

Even in reach, where there are supposedly hundreds upon hundreds of ships, we only ever see maybe 15 for 2 seconds.

Indeed terrible.

Earth was more then well defended and I wouldn't be surprised if the covies lost alot more ships then UNSC due to 300+ super macs.

It didn't matter, they proved to be useless once the Covenant fleet passed the MAC's, they couldn't point them towards Earth.

You mean like they did in halo reach?

Learn to accept people interest.

If you watch the first cutseen in rats nest commander keys tell chef that truth fleet destroyed what was left of the home fleet. Those ships just go lucky and survived. Thoses where that last ships the Unsc had. The reason for why they did not follow is because the flood and brutes were still on earth and they wanted to fight them off to end the war

  • 02.17.2011 4:10 AM PDT

I'd say we have about 100 ships left. Even if the "home fleet" was every last ship we have. Which I doubt. No sane commander would use 100% of his fleet to engage a massively technologically superior force that outnumbers him. (in terms of number of 'ships of the line'. Frigates don't count).

Why didn't the UNSC go through the portal? Because they fail. ONI would of done. They would have a field day. Plus we could easily send a dozen or so Corvettes to assist our ground forces even if we couldn't send any warships.

The UNSC would want a presence there, especially when it could be the key to saving Earth.

Bungie Pentathlon - who actually cares ?

There is only so much that can be portrayed on screen at one time - the poor old xbox probably could not handle hundreds of ships fighting each other.....

Meltdown territory

Return to Sender?

There's a good number of ships engaged in combat when Chief takes that bomb to the assault carrier.

I wish they'd have gone and done a Babylon 5-like shot with tons of ships and fighters in combat between the stations.

I think its more because Cortana said that Gravemind and his flood army were coming to earth. They wanted every ship because if they lost because they sent a few ships into the portal, they wouldn't have anywhere to go when those ships got back.

Yes, Return to Sender was in Halo 2 - but it didn't depict a massive and I mean - massive firefight in space. If anything the biggest battle we ever see is the great schism of covenant ships in front of High Charity.

Those were a background effect, not actual ships. It would've looked stupid to have a bunch of 2D background effects for your fleet in a more advanced game on the 360.

It wouldn't have looked real, and we be complaining about that now.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

In Crow's Nest, Commander Keyes tells us that Truth destroyed what was left of Earth's fleet. Not only that, but Lord Hood told us "I only have a handful of ships, it's a big risk". So it's not surprising that only three frigates survived to fight the Keyship at the portal.

Things get different when the enemy is genocidal and wants to activate a doomsday device. You have to win, or you're dead.

Actually, frigates are the only ship that could be in atmosphere and still have combat capabilties. Seeing as the 300 super macs completely surrounded the planet, there was probably several more ships left. Due to the risk, they kept to atmospheric ships (pulling frigates, which operate in three's normally, makes sense.) If those three frigates were all that's left, then why did they even mention "We'll make our stand here?" Even then, at that point the Elite's had their ships. Why take your ships into combat when you have more advanced ones going "Hey, we'll do the fighting!"

So yes, the home fleet may have been gutted, but having only three frigates is unlikely IMO.

you are a good translator
Idiot can be a hard language to learn, but once you get it down, everything becomes so clear! The whole world will make sense to you.

I'm sure some ships not rated for atmosphere were still in space.

ANSWER!!!

Whilst aboard the Covenant Flagship Ascendant Justice, Cortana successfully completed the first known in-atmosphere slipspace jump, usually impossible due to the inter-lapping gravitation fields. This information was later leaked to the Covenant fleet around Reach by Ascendant Justice's Associated Intelligence construct. In-atmosphere Slipspace jumps were subsequently performed by Covenant forces during the Battle of Earth.

TL:DR they dun jump'd past dem big guns!

Or simply killed the ships and guns over Africa, seeing as they didn't really care for the rest of the planet that much.

Personally, I have a major question, I know the super-macs weren't going to be faced toward the planet, but at the end of Halo 2, you see a space battle still going on, and the Cairo intact. At start of Halo 3, it seems like space-wise everything is over.

I'm simply going to assume Hood called from the Cairo in Rat's Nest, or that he transferred to a ship.

1) They're dead, dude.

2) They did. All they could spare (again, some frigates, 'cause they're all dead) took part in the battle over the Ark.

I have to agree with this post. Bungie tries to create vast battles of hundred of ships and enemies, but all we ever get is small, quad-like battles, and no Man vs. Army encounters. On top of that, the sheer ratio of humanity to covenant is not shown as frightening as it should.

Except the opening scene of Halo 2 where you see hundreds of cruisers,if you pay attention then you see a massive sense purple could around high charity, the purple cloud is probably the massive covenant fleet.
